Arbman Al
I have been trying to wire up a radio but the wiring colours are all strange. I have managed to get power to the head unit using standard connectors, but the speaker wires do not make sense. I did manage to get sound out at one stage, but without any earth wires connected?? The attached picture shows the wiring. The grey block plugs into the block from the radio and powers up fine, also retains the memory. The gree/grey/purple and white wires are the speaker +ve wires from radio, and these connected to a yellow, red, gree and blue wires whioch gave some sound but not very good. I connected the four black wires (which go into one) to the speaker -ve wires from the radio and now i get no sound. The speaker wire colours are nothing like the manual colours - anyone else got a jap import that can help with advice on the wiring? Cheers....Al
teabag
Japanese spec D1s have an amplifer (behind the passenger kick panel I believe) to drive the loudspeakers, so remove the the loudspeaker wiring from the amp and extend them up to your head unit the colour codes are standard as shown in the Haynes Manual or you can "buzz out" the wiring to prove which is which. Arbman Al
I am having trouble locating the amplifier. Does anyone have a picture or able to direct me? I have had a look on the passenger side but can't see anything that might be an amp. My disco is a series 1 jap import. Thanks.
teabag
Have you looked at the drivers side, it's only info I have picked from the forums over the years it not that big just a small black box with a feed in and loudspeakers wires out,
Arbman Al
I found it in the end! It was on the passenger side behind a panel on the side. Took it right out and bypassed the wires. Speakers all working but not much bass to them. I do not have the sub-woofer on the rear door as it is a Jap import. Thanks.
teabag
Well done 4inch speakers don't produce much bass bass, do you have a bass treble adjustment on the head unit if so turn one up the other down. Ps what does the amp look like?
Arbman Al
The amp part number is AMR5117. Google this number and you will see some photos. Cheers.

Oooooo looks quite meaty then as I deal with electronic stuff I would pull it apart to find an audio input and a speaker output just to see if it would work as a mono sub amplifier. I know it would cheaper perhaps just to get a passive sub amp and speaker in a box and fit it.
Arbman Al
If you are passing Woking at any stage, you can have the one I pulled out. Not planning on using it at all.
teabag
That nice of you thanks, but I have a sub amp, put it on eBay see if you get any interest may be Also I heard the Japanese spec head units don't receive the uk radio channels, you don't have that problem then. Arbman Al
There was no radio/head unit in the Disco when I bought it 3 weeks ago. I had a spare Sony head unit in the garage so fitted that. Radio works fine.
