LT77 to fit 88" 1971 2A

Im half way there have got the 200tdi in and running like a charm, but i would greatly appreciate anyone's help to sort this problem out

The gearbox number of my LT77 starts with '59A' which research says its out of a 2.0 MPI disco...

so first off will this mate up to my 200tdi?? or do i need a different bellhousing because of the stud pattern...

but also it appears the starter motor knockout on the bellhousing is on the opposite side to where it bolts onto the tdi's flywheel housing... so clearly something is wrong there

but as this is all going into a series the bellhousing appears to be too long and is likely to foul the bulkhead... so would this conversion require both a shorter bellhousing but also mainshaft in order for them to mate up

cheers eddy

Hi

I'm sure you have it covered but the Series Land Rovers have U/Js not c/V joints. It can cause problems as the lt77 is permanent 4WD.

People always seem to make a big thing out of this, buts its all rubbish!

I've been running permanent 4wd on my series for years with U/js and the only thing you get is a very minor bit of kick back through the steering when at full lock. Its really nothing and I dont know what all the fuss is about.

By the way - the LT77 is not permant 4wd - its just the main box. What makes it 4wd or not is whatever ever transfer box you decide to fit on the end!

Anyway - you need a defender LT77 - and discovery one is not suitable at all. One from any 4cylinder defender will do.
