Alternator charging light stays on

Just bought a Defender 90 200tdi and was made aware of the fact that the charge light was on constantly. Was assured it was only a case of tightening the belt and it would be fine.

Got the car (?) home and checked the belt tension - seemed OK but tightened it a little to make sure.

Charge light is quite bright at idle but dims as the revs increase (never extinguishing completely)

I presume the battery is charging as I've had the vehicle for a few days now and the battery hasn't gone flat.

Is my alternator on the way out, or just the rectifier pack? If so, where can I source a new one from?

Probably the regulator but you can check it with a digital voltmeter - voltage at the battery should be about 14.2-14.4V with a few revs on (say 2000rpm) if it is less than 14V then there is a problem and if less than 13V then it is definitely knackered. Not sure at what voltage the light comes on though.

Personally I can't be bothered fixing things like alternators, new ones aren't that expensive and if the regulator is on the blink there is a good chance that bearings and things will be past their best as well. But many people do recon them to save a few £ :)

I had something similar-ish to your problem.

My alt needed a bit of a rev to excite and start charging in the mornings. The amount of revving needed increased until it stopped charging one day.

I whipped off the alt and removed the regulator/brush pack from the back of it; only one or 2 screws IIRC. My local mechanic donated a regulator from an old tractor alt and it's still going strong.

Worth looking at and alot cheaper than buying a new one.
