Jinx Reyneke
Hi Guys, I have a 300tdi 96 model. Have just recently rebuilt the whole engine. All was well. Then I began to notice oil "damp" all over the engine and could not find the leak. But have noticed more and more oil.As soon as the engine gets to working temperature the oil pressure slowly drops. Now have discovered that the oil is leaking from the timing belt cover drain plug. Question. Which seal is likely to be leaking? And why would the pressure drop? Would appreciate help or suggestions as I've already left on a 7000km trip through Southern Africa. But am still in a place where I can buy a few parts. Frax
As it get hot the oil gets thinner and if its going to leak it will do it then, I would check the crank shaft seal. Regards Frax
Les Henson
Crank seal is the most likely culprit. If the oil gets on the belt it'll severely weaken it and it may snap. Les.
tacr2man
what oil are you running ? not a 5/40 i hope ! Pressure drop when hot not a unusual happening , as long as not extreme , ie oil pressure light on at idle ! Leaking seal, what was crank surface on seal journal like at rebuild , may need speedy sleeve as well as new seal?

crowmann
I run 0-35W oil with no problems - odd drip aside. To keep the oil nice and cool I fitted a second oil cooler in series. PSI when proper hot is 38 when running full speed. When cold about 60.
