SeriesEwan
Hello. I am going to paint my underside with Upol Zinc 182 Any idea how much i will need to paint an 88 chassis in it?
Gazzar
I'd say about a tin, perhaps a tin and a half. If I recall correctly that stuff is quite gloupy. I presume you've stripped the chassis down to the bare metal, as that stuff needs to be on the raw material. How are you treating the inside? SeriesEwan
oh bugger, does it really need to be on bare metal? by tin? what size, I was lookin at either a 2.5 or 5 ltr tin. I was advised by a local body shop about the job. To keep costs down the plan was to steam clean & then wire brush off lose rust from the underside then paint it all with zinc 182. I was then going to get them to cavity wax & underseal on top of that.
Gazzar
Well, I suppose that would work, so long as the paint wouldn't lift. I'm just worried that is the zinc isn't touching the steel it can't do any good. Not sure about underseal, though, it can trap the moisture. I'd prefer to be able to see where the rot was starting. To be honest, if you were going for cheap, then a couple of layers of red oxide would be sufficient, with a top coat of chassis black. The main thing, of course, is to keep the wet and salt from the steel, so whatever works!
Retroanaconda
My method has always been to paint the outside, and wax the inside. Reasoning being that at least with simple paint on the outside I can see if the rust starts to get through and touch it up with relative ease. That and weekly pressure-washing the chassis! SeriesEwan
turns out it takes about 2ltrs to coat the underside of a SWB chassis with one coat on bare metal if anyone is after this info.
RobSmith
turns out it takes about 2ltrs to coat the underside of a SWB chassis with one coat on bare metal if anyone is after this info. Is that the underside or the underside, sides and top of the chassis? I will need to paint my 109 soon. Rob
SeriesEwan
underside, sides, outriggers & whatever i could get access to without totally dismantling the thing angle grinder with a wire brush attachment saves hours in the stripping back to metal , A flap wheel might be better but I didnt have one. RobSmith
I have mine completely to pieces.... see "Series iii mix and match" for pics of mine. I am glad you worked out how much paint I might need That helps when the pain I want to use is expensive and I want to buy enough but not way too much. SeriesEwan
well thats how much I used anyway ( and bought way too much zinc 182 in the process of discovering this ) its quite gloopy stuff that I used & I only did one coat as I had it all waxed/sealed afterwards
