reb78
I have a 2003 TD4 with play in both driveshafts (seems like both ends and worse on the left side). At its last service, my local garage also reported that there were metal fragments in the IRD oil. On Bell engineerings site, they mention that failure of the RHS driveshaft can lead to premature wear and failure of the IRD. Question is, when is it too late to save the IRD? Would i get away with just changing the driveshafts now or is it too late? I have no idea how big the metal fragments in the oil were, but my mechanic reckoned they were a problem - it seems to drive ok, no untoward noises etc. The play in the RH (offside) shaft is at the IRD end and is up down rather than rotational. The play in the nearside shaft is at both ends and seems to be both rotational and up down.
JCC
The up & down play at the IRD ends is disturbing. Slight rotational play is normal for driveshafts as are small wear particles in drained used gear oil. Just my generalizations, specialist opinion needed.
