Roberto FL
just bought a FL1 KV6 - 04 petrol' and sent to garage for revision. bad news... need to check coolant loss in the engine. Seems to had an overheat in the past and now i ve to pay the bill. Ok under warranty, but is possible to fix and get the car ok again or need to pray for not have the engine blown? FridgeFreezer
If there is *only* coolant loss and not overheating then it might be OK (it can be fixed & live) but if it's been overheated then the engine may not last long, the K1.8 heads go soft if they are overheated, I don't know if the KV6 suffers the same but they have a bad reputation. The flip side is that the bad reputation stops garages from looking for the real fault, coolant loss could be a leaking pipe which is easily fixed but many times they will jump in and replaces the head gaskets because this is what they "always" do. As for the KV6 compared to the K18, I think the KV6 just uses more fuel and doesn't go any faster is all I've heard about them.
Jon White
KV6 is a terrible engine with a terrible reputation. Landrover fixed the 1.8 k, but the problems with the V6's were never resolved. In short the simple advice is do not buy a kv6 - period. If you have one with water troubles, then good luck! Even land rover main dealers refuse to work on them!!!!!! We have 2 enginneers in brazil that works with kv6. They have actually very good reputation in fixing LR better than the main dealers. Lets see. One of then is working on mine. The entire engine is being checked, valves, o rings, block etc etc. So far 2.5k pounds burned! The shop will extend engine warranty for more 6 months, and yes, they know very well the project errors on Freelander 1 (rover engine problems; overheating; good transmission with bad cooling sistem; carp sunroof; only front disc brakes with a ABS??? and so on...). Defender has also a long list of technical mistakes as well as other LRs. Now, statistically 20-30% of petrol K series seemed to had problems. Do anyone have another number? specially differentiating 1.8 from kv6? Ive heard only people weeping on their rover engines or others telling same things as to stay away from then. Only descriptions. Note, hard to believe that such potential carp auto has been sold for almost 10 years without any changes!!!! OR BMW, FORD or Honda were getting rid of LR as suggested by Mr White???? Good luck to TATA???
