Puffernutter Posted June 7, 2012 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Check the belt tension. Check the voltage, should be around 13.8 to 14.2v on a fast tickover. A dim light means that the alternator is not taking full field current. If a tight belt and low volts, then new alternator! Les Brock Posted June 7, 2012 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Dave, Sounds like its not putting out enough voltage ! check with volt meter matey Simpistic view...... voltage from the battery flows through the warning lamp and to ground via the alternator, when the engine is running voltage flow the other way as it is above battery voltage so the light goes out. in your case the voltage the alternator is putting out is less than battery so it glows !! not exactly right as its about voltage equalisation Regards Les Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fifth Horseman Posted June 7, 2012 Share Posted June 7, 2012 If the warning light goes out just above idle then comes on faintly at higher revs then it could be a diode in the alternator regulator thats gone short circuit. cosecon Posted June 8, 2012 Share Posted June 8, 2012 I know my answer is not scientific, but I have the same problem let's say for the last 5-6 years and I have not changed/charged my battery the last 6 years, so it might not cause any trouble. I get a very faint battery light (visible only at night) . My motor is V8, but I do not see any difference, apart from higher electricity needs for sparks.
