glow plug wiring

Recommended Posts

We are putting a disco 200tdi into my bro in laws 90 which has a td in it at the moment. Read the tech archive and found loads of help bits (thanks Les) but just need a bit more info....

The question is about how to wire up the glow plugs so that its all automatic like a normal tdi rather than the old 'manually timed' way on the ignition key. We have kept the loom and the relay, but on the disco there were four wires on a multiplug which go somewhere I assume to control it?

Any ideas?

cheers

You can buy the bits off a dealer

The cable PRC 6083 has a plug which connects to the glowplug timer and a yellow/black cable which goes to the screw on glow plug number 4. the thick brown cable goes to the battery +. Cable STC 934 plugs into PRC 6083 and the black/white wire screws to the bulkhead. At the other end of it the white/red cable goes to the white/red on the back of the igniton and the connector with both the whites goes to the white on the the ignition, they both have piggyback connectors. The yellow/black wire goes to the spade on the bottom of the orange looking square light on the warning panel and the other white goes to the top spade.

There's pictures on my website.

Why bother?? it just adds something else that can go wrong..... why not just keep the 'hold the key' set up??

In all honesty you hardly ever need to bother with the glow plugs on a 200 or 300Tdi.

On the 200Tdi conversions I've done, I've just left all the glow plug wiring standard, much easier and one less thing not to break. Though that's obviously just my opinion.

It is easier to leave things alone - however the 200/300Tdi setup uses quick heat plugs which differ from those used in the earlier TD. They are only designed to be on for short periods, unlike the those in the earlier engine which may require 30 secs or more when really cold. IMHO the factory setup is neater and works well - and is automatic.
