Noise Coming From Rear When Doing 50 mph & over

Recently when doing 50 mph and above a strange noise is being heard from the rear of the vehicle (2006 TD4 Freelander 1).

The noise is sporadic and sounds like WHOOOOOOOOO and sometimes WOW WOW WOW.

I am wondering whether it is a bearing or metal rubbing on metal.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Try swapping front/rear tyres. Could be the rear tyres have worn castellated. Failing that, could be diff pinion bearing or the viscous coupling bearings, you can drop it down & spin them by hand to feel them. If they do need changing, fit genuine ones - non-gen are noisier even when OK.

I had something similar on my year 2000 FL.

With mine, it was OK until about 38mph, then I would get the 'woo woo woo' noise from rear.

My mechanic mate told me it was the rear diff. Had it changed - noise still there !

Land Rover Specialist said it was VCU and bearings. Had them changed - noise still there !

Eventually changed the rear tyres as on the M.O.T the guy noticed they had worn unevenly and "castleated"

Changed rear tyres for new ones ......... Noise went .......... Yippeeee !

Cost me £1200.00 in total to find out though ! :(
