SmasherWebbs
Trying to negate if its wise to earth my planned second Alt or not. It will be charging/running spare banks of batts for seperate lights, winch, 12/24v system, etc. If i were to earth the second charging system to the engine wouldnt that interfere with the primary? i.e. back feed voltage on a short? I was planning to run the second system as neutral earth. Would this be fine minus a short? And planned to avoid/show a short by wiring in a small bulb across the two. Short light on! Anyone done this and got it right/wrong?
Adam001
My first advice would be to do some homework on basic electric principles. Not sure exactly why you need something to tell if they are shorting. Alternators can share the same earth, they earth through the body of the alternator onto the engine mounting bracket. You only need to worry about the +ve side Perhaps explain a little more and I'll try and help
martifers
Earth is earth. I use same earth for my 12v and 24v systems. As Adam rightly points out, only +ve to worry about.
SmasherWebbs
Ah great i was really only worried about shorting across the 12 and 24v and blowing the alts or a un-syconised EMF between the different alts. So just as long as i dont cross positives all will be fine happy days!!
martifers
I was also very concerned by this, especially running 24v live into dash for battery light in very close proximity to Td5 12v loom, so i encased it in 4mm breather tube ha ha over the top i know but better safe than sorry. The rest of wiring is all 52mm winch cable so no more worried about that than my 12v's.
