plasticbadger
Hi, I'm looking at replacing our work's Nissan Navara, it's good, but with nearly 100k on the clock the head gasket has just blown. A few other issues and general poor dealer service is putting me off buying another. I'm looking at a D4 commercial, as they're actually cheaper than a Navara, Amarok or Ranger, plus you get a 3500kg tow capacity, which would be good for us. My questions are, which engine to go for, is it worth paying the extra for the SDV6 over the TDV6. Also does anyone have real world experience of the fuel consumption? We'll cover 30k per year, so running cost is important!
muddy
A guy I know has just traded his 2.7 6 speed commercial for a 3.0 8 speed commercial, he tows his escort mk11 all over the country in a covered trailer, both were are chipped both seem to do about 27 to the gallon either towing or empty, 8 speed is a revalation according to him. He rallys himself and doesnt hang around! I was driving a D4 on Friday, no idea what engine or box but it went bloody well and I couldn't tell it change gear, as long as you can afford to run it I can't think of a much better motor. Will. plasticbadger
Sadly poor land rover dealer service might be killing this one. I asked for test drive spanning a couple of days, no can do is the answer. So I asked if I could take it for 100 mile + drive to gauge real world consumption, no can do is the answer. Then there's availability. No demo commercials and no stock. Ordering one and I may need wait 16+ weeks for delivery. VW on the other hand just loaned me a demo Amarok for a week. It's no Disco, but a crew cab is more practical and we averaged 30mpg on test. It's a good spec and mine immediately for £10k off list price. Well done LR... muddy
Where abouts are you? I work in sorts for Ripon landrover might be worth giving them a ring? Amaroks look cool tho and the new twin turbo one whilst not up there in power terms (vs disco) will be better tax and fuel wise, certainly a lump better than a navara I reckon. And can they tow 3500kg?
Tanuki
I'm seriously considering getting a D4 Commercial; my accountant is rather happy with the idea. I looked at an Amarok: it doesn't really pass my "dogs-and-logs" jetwash-it-down-after-use test, and also fails on corporate image. "Volkswagen" says over-50s fuddy-duddy; SEAT is youth-market; Audi is technology-leader; Skoda is value-first. I really wonder why Mercedes don't enter the market with a hot 300BHP turbodiesel stripped-out-trim version of the Gelandewagen.

j90 mud
We've run plenty of discos commercials. Currently got the smaller 210 bhp D4 buy the bigger engine drives better tows better. If you buy one you will spend plenty of time in the dealership with warranty claims Fuel 20-30 at best depending on what you tow Big engine with bell remap 17-35 mpg but so much better to drive ,more torque
