Disco II TD5 mystery oil loss

Hi

First post so here we go. We have a 2001 Disco TD5 which has done 105,000 miles. We were towing a trailer when the engine cut out, upon lifiting the bonet the left hand side of the engine bay was covered in oil and the engine had overheated. RAC man said head gasket, however the garage (LR specialist) has taken the head off and the gasket is almost new and the head is spotless and the oil cooler appear fine also. There is oil in the water but no water in the engine.

We have only had this vehicle for a couple of months and it looks like the previous owner has also had the problem, tried to sort it, failed and then sold it to us.

The garage are saying, put a new engine in but I hate not knowing what the issue is.

If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated, I am not that technical so please be kind. Happy to supply further info if I can.

Thanks in advance

J

It may be an idea to have the cylinder head pressure tested by a decent engine reconditioner. If the garage dont want to do this have the head sent to Turner engineering, they can do this for you.If it is cracked they will supply a replacement AMC head which is much better than the original.(And much cheaper than a new complete engine.)

If there is no damage to the rest of the engine,(All piston protusions check out OK,bores not damaged etc) then at 105,000m the engine is less than 1/2 worn out.A new head if needed would make the engine fit for at least another 150,000m.

Hi

The local LR dealer also suggested a diesel issu, however I am assured it is oil not diesel.

Checked the coolant and it was all foamy which I was assured was oil.

Update - aparently there is still some oil left in the engine

I think we are going to send the head off to be pressure tested - not confident that is the issue though
