2dextas Posted February 22, 2015 Share Posted February 22, 2015 Hi my defender 110 200tdi makes a "phutting" noise but only apparent when under load - putting your foot down going up a hill for example.This is getting worse. No apparent affect on power or temp Obviously sounds like exhaust/manifold issue but i cant find it when stopped and just reving the engine. I have had a look and cant see or feel anything obvious. eds Posted February 22, 2015 Share Posted February 22, 2015 Mine did this too and it was blowing under load where the downpipe meets the exhaust manifold. Worth removing and reseating. Snagger Posted February 22, 2015 Share Posted February 22, 2015 That sounds like a head gasket or manifold gasket failure. Gas erosion could occur if left too long. I'd replace the manifold gasket first as it's cheapest and easiest, and then test it. If it continues, replace the head gasket as a matter of urgency.
