200 tdi - phutting noise under load

Recommended Posts

Hi

my defender 110 200tdi makes a "phutting" noise but only apparent when under load - putting your foot down going up a hill for example. This is getting worse. No apparent affect on power or temp

Obviously sounds like exhaust/manifold issue but i cant find it when stopped and just reving the engine. I have had a look and cant see or feel anything obvious.

Any suggestions as to likely source and or how to replicate the" load" so i can find the source or any other tests etc

regards

mike

That sounds like a head gasket or manifold gasket failure. Gas erosion could occur if left too long. I'd replace the manifold gasket first as it's cheapest and easiest, and then test it. If it continues, replace the head gasket as a matter of urgency.

well had a poke around and it seems to be just as Eds suggested just the down pipe junction, bit of fettling and it seems cured.

Snagger - i was paranoid about head/manifold gasket initially hence request for tips on testing/finding but thanks for input - hopefully now resolved
