Glenroy
Hello, I am new new landrover, I have just bought a defender 2006 county. I am having trouble with the other gear box to select low range and engage the diffs. I have tried to engage it in high range but when it move it across to the left it doesn't feel like a normal change of gears. Also the light doesn't appear. Any help would be great. vulcan bomber
You will probably just need to roll forwards a few feed. Locking the diff doesn't feel the same as changing between high and low range.
robertspark
Glenroy the other gearbox is what is called a transfer gearbox. It transfers the drive from the main gearbox to the front and rear axles The short gearstick has four positions When the short gearstick is towards the rear it is in high ratio, when it is toward the front it is in low ratio. In order to fully engage low and high ratio you need to sometimes rock the vehicle back and forth by gently letting the clutch in and out whilst the engine is running It does not have a synchromesh within it so you should not change ratio whilst moving In addition it has a different lock in the transfer case by moving the small gearbox right and left it engages the diff lock (one lock not plural) and disengages it, this can be done whilst moving lockas it is sprung loaded and will only angage and disengage when the splines align on a collar and the shafts. When it slides across the light will illuminate and visa versa when it disengages. Only engage difflock off road and on soft moveable surfaces, and do not use your right foot to give it some welly and wheel spin. You can use it on snow and gravel but not tarmac. It does not lock the front or rear differentials only the centre diff. When using it you can get a phenomenon called windup. Which happens automatically because the difference in drive between the front and rear axles due to cornering and steering. On a soft surface it is not a problem as the wheels will slip and release the stress on a hard surface such as tarmac it can damage the drive and when you come to disengage diff lock the light won't extinguish. This is corrected by stopping and driving backwards a short distance and it should release the sprung loaded locking collar. Rob
Chicken Drumstick
Without wishing to be insulting, but this is a classic case of the RTFM!
Chicken Drumstick
That said. Changing from High to Low can be done at standstill or rolling at approx 5mph max. It doesn't feel like a normal gearchange. Sometimes a couple of revs while you lift the clutch up can help it engage. Difflock is different and you won't feel anything apart from maybe the steering. If the light doesn't come on it could be the switch, or the bulb or the fact it isn't selecting diff lock. For reference. Diff lock is a centre difflock, i.e. the diff in the transfer box. There are no axle diff locks. So it is a singular diff lock.
robertspark
Without wishing to be insulting, but this is a classic case of the RTFM! Bit unfair that? New owner asking a question? Should we not be welcoming to the forum as we all started out as muppets? If someone can be arsed to take the time to provide an explanation then great, if not then fair enough too (best to move on and keep trap shut) More benefit to the forum to be welcoming as you don't know what specialism they could offer in the long run where the rest of us learn something Tin hat at the ready Rob
