blindsteviemac
Hi, I have a '96 300tdi, its just blown the turbo to bits and there is a huge amount of oil in the intakes. I think it has entered to engine and hydrauliced it. My question is, what is the best way to get the oil out? The engine was working hard and suddenly made LOTS of smoke, I turned it off, but when I tried to start it again the engine tried to turn but wouldn't. don't think its seized, just full of oil. Help! Boydie
With a blown turbo the engine should not have hydrauliced, the oil supply should not be that great a quantity/volume to cause too much damage. As you said, all you will get is a huge smoke trail. As for removing the oil from the cylinders the easy way would be to disconnect the power supply to the fuel cutoff solenoid, remove the injectors and/or glow plugs and turn the motor over for a couple of minutes then clean down the mess in the engine bay. Alternatively just fit a new turbo and take it for a good run, the engine oil in the cylinders will soon burn off.
Nigelw
Boydie my hero you just brought back one of my funniest memories of working on heavy plant, we had an old Volvo A25a articulated dump truck, it had some 24,000+hrs on the clock and consumed 2gal engine oil/day 1gal transmission fluid and some 5gallons hydraulic oil/week, boy was i happy when the turbo blew, rebuild time!!! The thick plumes of smoke hung in the quarry like smog and took forever to lift, there was nothing on the dipstick by the time it got to the road way for the low loader to fetch it. Back to the yard, engine out, boxes out, the strip and overhaul began! After 3 weeks of this that and the other delays we arranged that I'd meet the fitter in the workshop at 5am and we'd set off with him escorting me the 11miles to the quarry where the rest of the gang was coming, start her up, everything seemed ok, set off down the road an suddenly the phone started ringing, the fitter was yelling for me to pull over as there was a 15 foot flame singeing every overhanging branch above the road seems the exhaust got filled with oil and it was burning off on our maiden drive post rebuild, I thought it was hillarious
Boydie
Nigel, I would have paid good money to see that, but I don't think Stevie is going to have that problem
