Freelander Diesel Questions

Cheers all, first post so here goes ...

I have a caravan and unfortunately my company Vectra 1.9CDTI has gone back because I've moved jobs so am now in the market for a new towcar - I really fancy a Freelander because it's not too big, has the 4x4 ability when needed, has 3 proper seatbelts in the back for my young ones (in the £5k arena I'm looking there are not many 4x4's that offer this), and also because basically I have always wanted a LR !

It's going to be Freelander 1 and I want a 5 door diesel, ideally a Td4 but will happily have a TDI if I can' find one. I have a few questions :

1. Do they all come with A/C or is dependant on age/trim level ?

2. Do they all come with HDC ?

3. Any general things to check/look out for when I go to view

I'm not a complete novice and have bought secondhand cars before but any advice on anything specific to check would be appreciated.

TIA

Jonathan

Welcome to the forum! :)

Mine is a 1999 L series 5 door with AC and HDC. I picked it up for a little over 2k with full LR service history. Only downside is it's very PURPLE!!

I've towed a twin axle car trailer with it so far which has been a bit loaded up and it towed just fine... to be honest I nearly forgot the trailer was on there while on the motorway, thats how nicely it tows.

Good luck B)

1. Aircon was dependent on trim. There were two ypes of trim, pre-2000 and post-2000. (2000 "MODEL YEAR" = sold in 1999!)

Pre-2000 the models were Di XDi XEDi etc

Post-2000 the models were S, GS, ES and later on the HSE was added.

Aircon was available as an option on all models but standard on GS and above, IIRC. ES added cruise control and powerfold mirrors. S lacked alloy wheels.

2. Early base models lacked ABX/HDC/TC however I'm pretty sure it was availble from launch

3. Looking for a diesel is a darn sight easier than trying to select a good petrol. As well as all the usual second hand car things to check, the following are particularly important.

- Check operation of every button and electrical gadget, including windows and doors.

- Take along a bottle of Tippex and put a blob on the propshaft on either side of the VCU. After the test drive, check they are no longer lined up.

- Listen for thumps/clunks/whines when driving, particularly over speedbumps/tight corners/changing gear. If you identify any, refer to the forum to identify them.

- Check that HDC lamp illuminates on dash when ignition turned on.

Cheers

Chris,

I do believe you are turning into a bit of a Freelander geek in your old age :lol:

Good advice about tipex on the prop tho.

There is always a certain amount of "drag" when on full lock, when manouvering for example. It feels wierd but is normal.

Happened long ago ....

If there's any proof required, regarding the towing, 2,000kg towing capacity, unless the vehicle is fully loaded, when it is reduced to 1,800kg to prevent the combination exceeding the gross train weight. (Now waiting for Jules to post his "I towed a Range Rover and trailer halfway around the world at 90mph with the Camel" story.)

in your old age

Youngster compared to you, Dan....

Cheers

You can Laugh I towed a 23' caravan to Spain and back with your camel at 70mph all the way :P following our mate with there camper..

Grate tow car.

Reverse and overrun brakes are the only things Freelander struggle with.

A big caravan or Ifor trailer and reversing up hill will total the clutch, I saying this because I have a steep drive and the freelander could never reverse up it. driving up forwards not a problem. I drove accordingly and never had a problem with it.
