  1. As stated the Defender has battery inside cabin, so cut off can be also close to battery and out of harms way when car is locked up. How about using a heavy duty relay under the disco bonnet, and a remote switch in the cabin? Not yet into competitions, so no requirement to satisfy comp rules.. Just interested where other Disco owners had put theirs...
  2. D44 spare wheel mount OK, so Devon 4x4's is a little more snazzy than mine ! I put the CB Aerial mount on as well (great idea from this forum) and used a wing mirror mount to attach the thing to the D44 mount. Also put a new front winch and bumper on - just need to decide on where to fit the front registration plate ! New front bumper #1 New front bumper #2
  3. Will be fititng the winch wiring this weekend, First Four suggest in the bonnet area, but my defender has it in the cabin (on the seat box) ANy suggestions
  4. Have 255/85 R16s on my Disco and they rub the front radius arms. w
  5. I dont have any protectors in my wings, do they actually do anything ? BTW I have cut away wheel arches with D44 aussie wheel arches
  6. I just bought a 94 disco, which had a 2inch lift, southdown front guard, southdown snorkel, soudown tank guard/rear tow 33inch BFG MTs Although the rust worms are at home I plan to keep her for a few years until she finally rusts (believe me she wont last much longer), inner wings, rear body mounts, and rear wing seatbelt mounts etc. I went to first four off road http://www.firstfouroffroad.co.uk/ and said that my budget was around a grand, came back with a front winch & bumper, rear winch, although this was to include rock sliders, my motor has devon 4x4 wheel arches on so the std rock slider wont fit. Richard @ Mill Services has made a set up for me to fit. My advice: (for what its worth) is to go to a single supplier and get their advice for all you want, they might offer you a discount, if you buy it all from them. I like discos, but their complexity is baffiling compared to my 90 which has sliding windows, manual locking, and the like, but it looks the business. Give Peter @ first four a ring... he has a disco so knows what he is at...
  7. Ordered the D4 today ! it looks a lot nicer than my one ! Not that I have a spare yet, been waiting 3 weeks from Bronco4x4, they say it might be another 3!
  8. With VAT and postage the D44 one comes to £70.00. I agree that this is a more professional looking device, and may be the cheaper option, if I include the time already spent, then getting someone to cut the 10mm steel plate, and me to drill the holes and then paint it etc. Hmm.. Need to think about this one
  9. I have just made a prototype spare wheel carrier for the Disco's larger diameter spare wheel. I had intended in modifying the Disco mount, but with the wiper in the way, decided on an adaptor plate. I had a 110 spare wheel mount in the garage so made up a wooden former that had the three holes from the Disco, and immediately above the three for the 110 door mount. I now want to make a metal plate version before I take this out on the road, so if anyone knows where I can get such a beasty made let me know. Alternatively, if anyone has any better ideas, please advise... I will probably crop the 110 mount at the bottom so the spare sits a bit lower, and does not obscure the rear window so much, but the clearance between the bumper and the wheel is not now a problem... side view side view no wheel All pictures
  10. I dont really need them, unless its for a supply of fresh water in the car, so am considering filling them in with a plate cut to the same size as the whole, and a cover plate (we used to call them but straps - but youu probably snigger at this description) so the surface of the roof stays the same. Anyone done this before me?
  11. As the topic says, the rear body mounts on the 94 Tdi are well on the way to their former pre-metallic state. Point One - Is this an MOT failure? Point Two - does anyone know where I could get a set (easier than making them)... Thanks very much (I would enclose picturesm but as fellow Disco drivers most of you have probably seen rust before, and whilst its good to see it in places where you dont think you have it, the fact that its there makes you wonder about your own vehicle...)
  12. Thanks Mark, no rush it will be one of the many jobs that I end up doing in the next few months ! Nic
  13. It needs to have the internal door locking/unlocking tab pulleed fully upwards before the door handle works (think its the same for inside handle as well). In the glove box, previous owner left small plastic bag with 2 round springs... Is it a big job to replace these springs (assume they go somewhere on the locking tab).. I tried searching for this question, but to no avail. thanks
  14. I put a 3.5V8 with auto in my NAD 90 and the performance is lacking on motorways, a little hill can take the punch out of it. SO saying I put RR Transfer box in with the converson. This has now been replaced with 1.44 tranny from early 110, as I ended up putting 35" tyres on.. Sadly I have not been able to test drive it yet, as normally working by myself at weekends after taking wife and kids out (actually quite pleasurable) so 8 hours work takes me 2 weeks in elapsed time, Oh and replacement box seems to dislike being filled with oil (new seals all round) but drips like a goodun.... so will be taking out again to see where the oil is coming from.... If I could do it again, Id get a 4.6 or a 300tdi, one sounds nice, the other doesnt sound too bad .... I dont do enough miles to warrant an LLP conversion....
  15. When I fitted QT front radius arms to an already 2" lifted 90, the QT versions are wider than factory along their length. NS radius arm fouled the chassis in the area of the outrigger, asked on LRO, someone said just to put wheels on and it would sort itself out... I did and it did, as soon as have taken transfer box out to fix leaky seal, will be in a position to judge if justy-panhard-rod is required...
  16. Budgie, WHere did you pick up the power for your roof mounted unit? did you run a new power up there for it or did you pick one from the available supplies (lights etc)... And where did you run the wire to the back for the aerial? The guys who fits my car alarms says he normally runs wires from front to back via the headlining... keeps em out of the way, but with two sunroof's to get round its gonna be tricky... Looks like the option to put it under steering column either on front or side of transmission tunnel would run in to leg problems, as my pins are too long and squash up in this area...
  17. I like the position that shows it on the drivers sode, mounted under the dash, that keeps it away from sight, but allows connections to be made easily... Now where to mount the whip aerial !
  18. Without getting into the topic of why I want to fit one (we use them in the local club when out) I am looking to fit a CB in the Disco. Options seem to be: * On top of the dash * in the roof (perhaps loose one of the sun visors - which I never use?) * on te side of the transmission tunnel Any other suggestions or photos (both front seats have airbags) and I want to keep the radio/cassette Thanks Nic Wood
  19. Hi all, Just bought a 300tdi on an M plate. The motor has a 3" lift and 33 inch tyres with arch cut outs, and is in average condition. Southdown steering guard, rear tank protection and snorkel. I have a heavily modified 90, and want to be able to take the kids out with me as the 90 only has one extra seat. I am looking to get a winch & bumper, rock sliders (like the tree sliders that Mill services do - have some for the side of my 90) a rear bumper and all this for less than a grand.... First Four off road seem to be the closest (not too far off) and they can supply the whole lot. If anyone has any advice of the above (good or bad experiences) I would be pleased to learn from them. Its nice to have a 'car' like experience whilst mud plugging, even if the radio does have two buttons missing (at least its got one). Back in 94, I bought a new M plated disco and drove it for 65,000 miles, with little problems (dash peeling aside)... so its nice to be back again.. thanks
  20. Ive got one in the garage you can have for one beer token and the postage? I can take a picture and send it to you if you want ....(the pirtcure that is) let me know if you want it
  21. My Ex-Mod 90 has what looks like a Southdown front steering guard fitted (and very nice it is too) The army also fitted a massive axle/diff guard at the front, which is bolted on to the four bolts that hold the radius arms on and is jackable. This is like a huge plate that effectively lowers the ground clearance for the whole axle. The problem has always been when off roading behind other solihul products with diff on same side. My motor has to flatten its way thru as the whole of the front axle guard lowers the clearance to almost that of the diff... SO she is coming off, and I want to get a good diff & steering guard. See that QT do one, so thought I would ask about getting a combined unit or a diff guard and a steering protector separately... Any suggestions....?
