  1. Is it due for a service ?

Im sure an hour spent changing all filters and oils and lubing UJ's would allow you/someone time to have a look at the vehicle as a whole, and with all wheels off the ground [on a ramp, not Dukes of Hazzard style] I think you could see if there was any rolling resistance.

Also see you have a passion for the water, was it left in Surrey or near the coast when you gaive it a month off ? (wondering if salt ingress has anything to do with your initial problems?)

  2. So the winch is just for posing then?

    Nicely turned out motor though!

Im sure you post was not meant to suggest that road going land rovers are not real in some way?

I am on the lookout for a front winch, but it is to aid loading of dead land rovers on to a flatbed trailer as opposed to getting stuck then getting myself winched out.

My 110 is an on road tow vehicle and I keep it purely for this purpose, it wont be going off road very often, but doesnt mean to say its a posing pouch truck.

    rant over ...

    Nice 90 Mr Phantom BTW

  3. What are the temperature extremes we can expect inside the engine bay of a Defender ?

Hottest in summer and coldest on Winter etc...

Reason wanting to know is getting some bitumen backed anti vibration/damping material (it has heat resistant coating etc) to stick to bonnet and want to make sure it wont melt off etc..

  4. I used to work for http://www.setrab.com and they did a compact oil cooler and fan assembly that created its own airflow and could be mounted away from the cruddy areas.

The website is a bit naff but you can get in touch and see if they still do the cooling packs (used to be fitetd to works Audi Quattro's).

There is loads of suppliers in the Uk you can get their parts from, I used James Lister Motorsport in Birmingham and Andy made me up a set of hydraulic hoses with adaptors from autobox to the front of tha rad and I mounted a Setrab oil cooler in front of the main radiator.

    Just my two pence worth...

  5. see this thread.

I have used CS gears and the gearbox & transfer box are still fine two years later and 30,000 miles.

Oil seal between boxes leaking (main I think) and the rear oil seal on the transfer box is weeping.

He did an excellent price and also disco geared by transfer box.

I think we are all agreed that Ashcrofts have a good predigree but if your counting the pennies as we all are at the moment....

  6. My 2002 Td5 110 with Td5 Alive chip/intercooler etc and nanocom runs at 86 degrees even up hills and does not seem to vary, If I pull a 3 1/2tonne trailer fully loaded it stays the same.

When I was in Spain a few years ago with another 110 on the trailer, it again stayed constant and this was in the hilly parts of Barcelona (did slow to 20mph mind - but that was before it was TD5'd)

  7. I have put a couple of rear door windows in and used this stuff of both occasions, it remains stickyish enough to be applied to door, then the glass fits in against it, and the ally angles screw in against both.

A sharp scraper can be used to remove excess.

I would never use silicone after a disasterous use when putting in a side window for someone who insisted that sillycone be used, I ended up fitting it again with RTV sealant.

Be careful not to linger on the Car Builder Solutions website for too long there are shiny things that attract your beer tokens !

  8. Im planning to collect some heavy items in the midlands in a few weeks, and to ease the pain of trailer hire and fuel, would be able to transport anything up to a 110 from the South East to the Midlands or beyond (would have to hire trailer for longer if its too far north).

Anyway, no date set yet, but if anyone has anything that will go on a 3500 open backed trailer (can tarp) and wants it moved northwards, then PM me.

    Ta

  9. Find your local automotive paint suppliers and ask they what they can make up for hand painting.

I seem to recall they offered me gloss only, but in a huge range of colours.

Give old paint a key (scouring pads) or wet and dry to get rid of edges, or filler if needed etc.

I used radiator rollers and brushes to get into corners.

Two coats and you get a reasonable finish.. (perfect for an E reg...) This was NATO green befor hand.

  10. I thought that my 110 with 130,000 on the clock might need new dampers, but I cannot get it to fail the sring-y-ness test.

I decided to keep pennies in my pocket.

Do yours not damp any more ?

This is what my local dealer sent me a few months ago:
