  1. The R6 engine was developed from the BMC E6 engine used in the Princess (UK). Leyland Australia turned the engine into a 2.6. The tooling was then sold to Leyland ZA and the engine was used here in the Marina, Rover SD1 and Land Rover Series IIIS. The IIIS was our version of the Stage1 V8, but with some differences...gearbox and engine, mainly. Stellenbosch only worked on the cam and carburation for the Landy application, IIRC.
  2. Regardless of the type of diesel engine....the rpm will be the same at 45MPH, unless something else on the drive-train or tyre size has been changed. You probably have an under-performing engine if it's the 2.25 from Land Rover, as you should get over 60MPH on a slight downhill
  3. "On the wing" seems to have worked ok on this Landy. Do you want yours to look similar?
  4. I recently decided to eventually upgrade the glow plugs to the higher voltage pin/probe type after another pig-tailed original blew on my 2.25 engine. The Y-403T of NGK was recommended on some forum, but they have never been available here. The NGK head office did recommend another possibility, though only 8 volt, but I can live with that, and I ordered a set of 4. For the astronomical cost of ZAR 273.60 (BP14.33 at today's exchange rate) I took delivery of 4 new glow plugs and off I trotted to my workshop for some testing. Connecting 12 volt to the glow plug achieved 400 deg C in 9.5 secs. I was impressed. I hope this info can be of help to someone else also frustrated with having to "glow" for 60 secs or more to get a start.
  5. I've had the same symptoms from my diesel. It was fixed by cleaning the small cylinder gause filter which is inside the fuel tank. There was a lot of crud on it, effectively blocking it. I also tightened up all the fuel system fittings from the fuel tank all the way forward to the injectors as it seemed to suck air into the system, possibly due to the blocked filter in the tank. Some of the connections could be turned tighter by about an 1/8th of a turn. Hope your cause is as easy to find and solve.
  6. Glad you came right. I notice they are even marked! Regs voor...links voor...
  7. BMW E36 + E46 have 5.120 pcd on 6.5x16 steel rims for winter tyres, with 47mm offset. I run 265/75x16s on FC rims which are also 6.5 wide without a problem (not on my P38 though). But why do you want steel, just out of interest? The center hole for BMW rim is +/- 1mm larger than P38. The 10mm less offset is negated by the slightly narrower rim. It should work a charm.
  8. Bentley, Mini and BMW also has 5X120 PCD with a variety of offset specifications. Their sparewheel rims might be more freely available. Might be worth a try.
  9. I wish you all the luck in the world when you interchange parts from a Santana IIIA and a Series suffix D gear/transfer box. There are only 3 oil seals that are common between them, nothing else! I have rebuilt and serviced both types. Santana IIIA is much stronger than a Land Rover SIII suffix D. It was common in ZA to fit all kinds of V8 engines to the Santana, with no problems at the gearbox end. The production Series IIIS that was available here '82 to '91 was also fitted with 4.236 Perkins and 3.54 diffs, no problems. All IIIS Land Rovers had the Santana Box and was the local version of the Stage 1. Over 6000 of these vehicles were produced in ZA. I would suggest the OP fit a Santana IIIA gearbox, or consider a LT77.
  10. Agreed. If you are that concerned about the strength then I would recommend you source a gearbox from a Santana Series 3 or 4. It has the same dimensions as the Landy box but is substantially stronger with ribbed casing and heavier gears. Bellhousing fits the V8. Its a 4 spd box and you can fit an overdrive. You could also consider the LT77 perhaps.
  11. Hi Rich On my truck the shorter long channels are at the bottom. That doesn't mean it is correct though. JP
  12. I agree with steveb, cut up a front door frame. There are quite a lot of used parts all over the show. Be patient and you will find what you need. As it is I have 3 available and am in Pta, some 1200 kms from you. PM me if you are interested, could perhaps arrange a lift down for the stuff.
