  1. I did it. Atf dexron ii. Smooth as silk. If I give it some stick, which i don't really do, there is a slight wine from the intermediate gear. Now though instead of a flickering diff lock light there is none. Is there a wire i didn't connect i wonder. Thanks to everyone for their input. The moral support was invaluable I think this took about 4 months at least. Don't do it at home if you need the vehicle for work πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I'll take it out on the highway soon.
  2. It will end up being atf because the nearest village is 14km away, they will have atf there. In happy enough with atf, it has 174000km on it about 110000 miles on it. Any main dealers are 30 to70 km away.
  3. Thanks quagmire, yes, fingers well crossed. I'm still held up by the mtf94. Only lr dealers sell it. Any suggestions? I've read that atf dexron can also be used. It seems to be a pretty big deal what to use. A neighbour Spanish brought me a5ltr of sae90 machine tractor gearbox oil. He said all the 4x4 people use it. I'm not convinced.
  4. Ive read all of them, im not a fan of anything but they are popular books here. I always liked the story of the kids whose parents died and they needed to borrow money for the taxi to go to the hospital in Granada and then it turns out to be a complete lie. Typical of this area. I hardly ever heard the word liar in the uk or usa, there's no wonder the word is used so much in Spain. They are very deceitful people and is almost impossible to trust anyone. Every man for himself wild west style. Anyway the lr is done. I bought gl5 api ep 80 90w 18 euros for 5 litres. Now waiting on some mtf94 for the r380. It drives, i moved it forward a few feet to test it. Happy days.
  5. Nice post. None of these jobs are very nice are they. I wonder very much what the mercedes g wagen forum is like. Vehicles needing this kind of maintenence are a pain in the arse. I imagine many failed relationships can be blamed on the land rover td5.
  6. That Chris Stewart drives a white colored discovery. He wears a hat and likes to get chummy with the likes of Virginia Woolfs grandaughter. He's got a very green bit of land tucked away at the end of the river bed down below. Other than that i couldn't tell you much more. He gets his feed at the same place as me.
  7. Ok Mo. I must confess that Id prefer never to have to repeat this job ever. One of the more, shall we say, tedious and miserable undertakings I have ever been unfortunate enough to get involved in.
  8. Can i reuse the oils or not worth the hassle. Order and wait for new oils.?
  9. Ok now only propshafts, ouch fingers.! Handbrake cable fixdown and oils. I seemed to have an oval thread nut and washer left over. I think these go on the right hand top stud.
  10. Now if you knew more about me and where I am, what you have written would shock you. Suffice to say that on certain parts of my land I can see his place, el Valero. I finally got the transfer case on, the input gear in and the pto cover on. Was much easier than I expected, all of it. Let's say that I like to be in the right frame of mind to do these things. More updates to follow. Thanks everyone.
  11. I haven't forgotten any of this. The next warm, opportune day, I'm going to apply the silicone and get on with it. Sorry but cow herding and survivalist methods mean the timescale goes out of the window. Ashley
  12. Ok people, i have the transfer box elevated, in its two ratchet strap slings more or less in line with the transmission. I did all this alone using a plank, some concrete building blocks and a long piece of timber through the front door windows to suspend the ratchet strap action. Now i have to put the silicon on the face of the transmission and mate the faces. Secure the bolts and then mount the input gear and retaining plate and pto cover. Any tips, advice ideas on what to do / not to do, at this critical stage? Well chuffed to have the tbox in position and about ready to mount.
  13. I will fill the groove only, im sure it won't stick to the end of the shaft. Im really thrilled to have the tbox back assembled, now to prepare to mount it.
  14. Ok so i got the thing installed, i didn't use any silicon. Just the o rings. Do i take the shaft out again and install it with silicon? I didn't see your post until now tweety.
  15. Waiting on the case o ring still , they cost pence, the tractor driver brings them from AlmerΓa. Hes bringing two this time just in case i break another. The end of the intermediate shaft is not deburred and thus many sharp edges to cut the o ring with.
  16. Ok. Got them out, was a bit of a struggle. Left the safety rings in because i couldn't get them out. Now the new races are installed. I need to get a new o ring (casing one) as i managed to damage the existing one passing the shaft back through the casing.
  17. I'll consider trying to get the circlips off. I've got an awesome pair of circlip pliers in the uk. No good to me here though. Ok guys, i take the point and I'll try to get the new races installed . Update soon. Thank you.
  18. Im not trying to cut corners, but I'm mindful of getting into problems here at 1000m 14 km from town. Here is nothing. I've tried with a brass rod. I have no circlip pliers. There is no way to hit it with anything from square as there is an obstruction at each end. Im very nervous about doing damage to the circlips as i don't have any more or pliers to remove them They need to be really good long nose ones to get them out from behind the race. What a load of trouble. Oh by the way my neighbour died about 3 weeks ago. That's what drinking dodgy strong local wine and not eating does for you. I can take the gear out again but i don't see why the old races shouldn't suffice. Why didn't i buy a Mercedes? Well you all know the answer to that. Everyone here tells me td5`s are ****. The only person not to was my dead neighbour.
  19. Ok i can't tap the old outer races out of the gear cluster. Im thinking i should use the old o outer races and the n new bearings. If you guys can approve that method of tell me how I'm supposed to get the old races out, without being a brute. Awaiting your essential advices . Ashley.
  20. Ok people, bearings should finally be arriving today. Faithfully despatched by Advanced factors in the 18th oct. In the republic of catalunya they would have arrived already.
  21. Ok so i will need circlip pliers to change the outer races or can i get them out without removing the safety rings(circlips)? Also take the chance that the fixed spacer will work with the new bearings? New bearings new stake nut collapsible spacer? Bearing in mind that I've got no bit that fits the stake nut. A large adjustable.
