Retaining sleeve for door lock barrels
Lockylockwood replied to Lockylockwood's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Hi all, a little update i soaked it in WD40 for a night and then just used a hammer and chisel. It’s currently looking like this. I’ll give it another soak and try again. I wish I had a vice. Might buy one 🤣 -
Retaining sleeve for door lock barrels

When you say warm it what do you mean? Blow torch? I have some WD40 but no plus gas. Would that work? -
Retaining sleeve for door lock barrels

Mine is metal. The instructions above are for a TD5 which they changed to plastic. Probably for this very reason -
Hi all, I am replacing the lock barrels on my defender 90 and I can’t prize the retaining sleeve from the old lock barrel. I have drilled the clip out (which was stuck) but it has all oxidised together. Any advice? either that, or does anyone know where I can get a new one from?

Retaining sleeve for tdi lock barrel

Did you ever find an answer for this? -
Hi all, I have just bought a galvanised rear door with a heated window. It comes unpainted so I was wondering what I should spray it with before the final coat? if someone could make some product suggestions for me and perhaps tell me what type of final paint to buy too. Here’s a picture of my defender

Update The following day I went out and it wasn’t starting again. I bought a new battery. One with a higher capacity and CCA. It seems to start every day since (although it takes a few seconds), however the battery light is still there and for some reason when I try to rev or even drive, the engine is lagging. Almost as if there isn’t enough power for something to engage the engine. Whereas before I was able to rev hard straight away. Not sure if that’s making sense to anyone?

So what you’re saying is that the warning light is somehow blocking the alternator from charging the battery until it’s off? That’s really interesting So what I’ll do is give it a go tomorrow morning. If it doesn’t start then I’ll jump start it and buy a new battery I definitely want this issue with the warning light fixed so I will definitely follow your advice on a higher wattage warning light (although I don’t know what the wattage is of the current one) Where can I get warning light bulbs from?

Very strange - I just bought one of these and it started immediately. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B015TKUPIC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image I checked the volts straight away and it was 13.5 whilst the engine was running I took it for a drive and it was fine. I’ll leave the battery connected all night and see what happens tomorrow. I feel like almost everything needs replacing in this old banger 🤣

It was one of the cheap ones from Halfords website that showed as compatible for my defender 90 200tdi (retro from 2.5TD). This one: Halfords HB072/HCB069 Lead Acid 12V I tried to charge it overnight and it is still showing as charging this morning after 8 hours. I think you’re both right. I’ll get a new battery. I don’t want to make the same mistake again so I think I’ll buy a decent one. People are recommending 1000amps and 115ah Whats your thoughts? Anything wrong with having a stronger battery?

Hello all, me again Im having an issue whereby my defender won’t start. I’m not sure if it’s the battery or something else? When I turn the key I hear a slow cranking which gets slower the more I turn the key. I should mention that I’ve had issues with the starter motor making a grinding sound in the past but it has always worked. With this current issue when I hook it up to starter pack (which plugs into a wall socket) it eventually starts after about 10 tries. I have tested the battery with a multimeter and it reads at 12.65v. I have also done a basic test for a battery drain using a multimeter but it’s reading 0.00 (I appreciate that isn’t the best way of testing it) I don’t know if it’s the battery, the starter motor, the alternator or a battery drain? Im tempted to replace the starter motor anyway as it needs changing. Maybe that is the best way to start? Any ideas?

LT77 - Knack required to find reverse
Lockylockwood replied to Lockylockwood's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Ok thank you. I’ll give it a look. I don’t have the reverse light connected but that’s not to say the switch isn’t there. I’ll let you know if I find anything. -
LT77 - Knack required to find reverse
Lockylockwood replied to Lockylockwood's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Thanks Mike, when you say reverse switch adjustment. Do you mean the reverse light switch or some sort of reverse mechanism at the bottom of the gearstick? -
Hi again friends Thanks for all your support with my last few questions. Your responses are helping me shape plans for my defender 90. I have another question regarding my gears. I recently had a refurbished LT77 gearbox installed and it has improved my gear changes massively. The only one I seem to have a slight issue with is my reverse. I have to sort of pop it up at a slight angle to find it. Someone told me that it may be a spring issue rather than a carp reconditioning job on the LT77 Is anyone aware of any adjustments that I can make to maybe improve this myself? Links to videos welcome. Someone also recommended that when reverse is sorted I fit a slickshift kit to make it easier for my wife to drive. Any thoughts on this too? Thanks all

Defender 90 2.5TD full body replacement
Lockylockwood replied to Lockylockwood's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Hi all, here’s some photos of the body. It’s just not straight. This doesn’t do my point justice though. It’s a lot worse when you see it for real. -
I have no idea what she was doing to be honest. I was losing my rag. She was putting it into 5th thinking it was 3rd and nearly stalling it. She kept taking ages to change down a gear on hills causing her to have to go back down to 1st gear every time. I’ve just given it a drive around the block and it was fine. I’ll keep driving it over the next few weeks and see what happens.

Defender 90 2.5TD full body replacement
Lockylockwood replied to Lockylockwood's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Thanks all. The issue is that it’s all misshapen and everything looks off. The garage has shimmed the bulkhead so it’s not that. I’ll share some pics tomorrow -
Can someone help? I have just let my mrs have a go in my defender after getting the engine changed. I’m sure if it’s her or not? she was driving it (terribly) and all of a sudden we smelt a sort of burning clutch smell, the cabin filled up with smoke and we could hear a sort of drip and hissing sound coming from under the cab. Is that just a burnt clutch or something more sinister?
