  1. I agree with BogMonster the sensor itself wont stop the engine from starting (assuming the sensor is fitted correctly and not letting air into the system) From experience when I had a TD5 I had the sensor replaced a couple of times they were notorious for failing but didn't have any impact on the function of the car. Not too sure on bleeding the system as back then I never had time to do my own servicing so it was always done by a garage, I did have experience with a couple of garages telling me they wouldn't change a fuel filter on a TD5 because they were troublesome to re prime but as they were not Land Rover specialists I guessed they didn't have experience with doing them!! I had a Nissan Navara that I was struggling to re prime and start and I telephoned the main dealer who told me they were an absolute B****td to get going again and they said sometimes they have to put them on a boost start and just keep cranking them sometimes for 6-7mins, He said just when you think its not gonna start it will fire up!! Might be similar with the TD5 but as I don't have experience I can't be sure!!
  2. Could possibly be the wiper control relay has fused contacts together, seem to remember this happening on a Peugeot I had, could possibly be the switch as suggested also what happens when you put the wipers back on are they normal? I would start with the relay as its easily accessible, take it out have a quick look for any obvious burning etc. Also a quick spray of WD40 in the switch contacts may be useful Let us know how you get on.
  3. From what your saying sounds like it could need the plug thread re tapping and think it may be worth getting them to do a compression test on that cylinder. I'm no expert though but I certainly think its worth keeping especially if its not a major issue and can be resolved fairly easily. Sometimes what seems a major problem can often be something very simple. Just knowing what it is or knowing someone who does know!! I personally think Landys are great fun and every time I sell one I want another so I'm keeping this one till its chassis turns into toast and even then I may rebuild her!! Hope you get it sorted!!
  4. Can be really frustrating but realistically as K88 MUD said taking out the cross member and letting the gearbox and engine tilt downwards will give you some clearance you can just about access it with a socket extension through the inside of the vehicle. Would be sensible to either put some of the other bolts back in while you undo this one or make sure the gearbox is very well supported. I'm in the process of Changing the Clutch and rear oil seal on my 300tdi so had to do all this on Saturday. When I put it all back together I'm going to use an engine hoist through the side door as I really don't fancy taking all that weight while trying to line it up. I changed the gearbox on my SIII that way and it made life very easy!! Hope you get it sorted!!
  5. I would be almost certain that having a Gas Steering Damper is the Fault, as the symptoms you describe sound exactly like the problems I was having. Certainly be worth trying a standard one. I took mine off and fitted a britpart one. Now the vehicle handles like a dream!! Check out this thread http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=38702
  6. Just to update everyone and Thank You for all your help. Took the disco to local landy specialist about a month ago who kindly looked over it for me, They suggested the following could be at fault, Tyres Over Inflated O/S/F Anti Roll Bar Link Worn Lower Rear Shock Bushes Worn Gas Steering Damper So came away with all the parts including a Britpart Standard Steering Damper, Fitted them all and noticed such a difference but was holding judgement till I had towed the horse trailer, Pleased to say I can't pick a fault with the handling now!! I think to be honest the biggest fault was having a Gas Steering Damper. As the A/R Bar Link and Bushes didnt look too bad when I took them off. Does anyone else have any experience with gas steering dampers? Does anyone want mine, its a Delphi Decarbon and its only 6months old. Cheers Michael
  7. Have to agree Timken Bearings everytime don't settle for anything less unless of course you like pulling things apart over and over and changing them!! Might be worth checking the needle roller bearings in the stub axles too if you got the swivels apart mine were shot when i overhauled the swivels. Actually on that topic does anyone have any tips on how to remove the needle roller bearings, I made a special tool with a piece of tube, nut & bolt and hammered/levered them out.
  8. Hi Nelly I have those kenwoods in the front doors of my 300tdi and they fit, know the locations are different in the 200 but the kenwoods arn't too much deeper than the landy ones so my best guess is they should fit! Regards Michael
  9. I also used a tube of car window sealent/adhesive and basically glued all my door seals on as a hose pipe test also showed that water runs down these and enters the vehicle at about the height of the top door hinge. Will mean there a bit difficult to get off but its stopped the water coming in!! Just the water drops apearing on the rear load cover Near Side to sort, assuming its the alpine roof or the drain pipe that runs next to there.
  10. Well I have to fill all my free time up with something. Sad thing is I dont think it will really add anything to the value of it but as I have regretted selling every Land Rover I ever had (Series 3 SWB, Series 2 SWB, Disco 200tdi, Disco Td5 2000) This one is gonna be for keeps!! Forever and ever and ever till it rots away anyway!!! I still have the odd drops of water landing on the rear load cover so can only suspect the alpine windows or the drain pipe that runs near there. Cheers Michael
  11. Thank You Yeah I dont think it would handle too much extreme off roading. Most of the Nvidia drivers a have a thing called NVRotate built in and ATi have their own similar thing. Cheers Michael
  12. I remember seeing a player called the Beat 500 or Beat 550 which has a built in mini screen and video outputs do a google of it not actually used one so dont really know how good it is. Most of my films are now on the hardisk of the laptop along with all my CDs!! I have a 3 pay as you go Mobile Broadband dongle that works really well in most places although im told Vodafone now do one pay as you go that only runs out when you have used the data instead of 30 days. Wifi works really well and i can sit on my drive connected at full signal to the house. Anyone interested in mounting an indash screen or car-puter here is quite an exciting thread. http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/fabricatio...-discovery.html Cheers Michael
  13. Had this problem on mine recently stripped the whole interior out to dry it 2 windscreens later it was cured!! First windscreen had a manufacturing defect and was mis-shaped, Got a heated windscreen out of it though!! Just need the relay and switch as everything else seems to be there!!
  14. Yeah I have impressed myself with how neat it looks, How much use it gets remains to be seen!!! Unless anyone could help me with fitting driving controls in the back, I was thinking Mr Bean Style few ropes and a broom handle. On a more serious note next project I am tempting myself with is putting a 7inch touchscreen in the front radio compartment and linking that to a separate computer for Satnav, Music Player and Handsfree. Found some photos of someone else's project and thinking I can make it look like it was built into the car. although never really done any serious fibreglassing if anyone can give me some tips. Cheers Michael
  15. Thought I would just share some photos of my latest project of fitting a media centre to my 300tdi Disco. The project came about when my 7inch Necvox roof mounted DVD screen manage to somehow fry its inner workings, photo as above. So I decided I could build a laptop media centre from my old dell laptop, this has a 15.4" Wide Screen so is a fantastic size for watching films. I built the laptop into a wooden box that had enough room for the powersupply, I actually had to cut nearly an inch off the front of the laptop and half an inch from the side to let the dvd drive sit flush with the outside edge of the box. I ditched the battery from the laptop as the charging circuit is faulty and most the time wont charge so this saved me a fair amout of space. I managed to get hold of a genuine Dell incar powersupply for £15 on ebay, cheaper than one from maplins and the real deal!! I covered the box in accoustic fabric and hacked the original latch into the box to hold the screen closed and added a power button in the side. I cut away a good section of the rooflining above where I was mounting too and Bolted a piece of MDF to the roof beam. This made sure I had something solid to attach the laptop too as there is a fair amout of weight, Cutting away the roof lining also made sure the heat can vent away as there is also nearly an inch gap between the base of the laptop and the base the of the box. A bit of clever trickery in the Nvidia graphics drivers allows you to rotate the screen so saves alot of hassle of remounting the screen in the bezel. I used a freeware Media Centre Software called MediaPortal, which allows you to watch films stored on the hardisk or DVDs, Music from your MP3 collection, Live Tv with Usb Tv stick, browse your photo collection and a load of other things too. All the Power cables, Usb Cables etc run to the boot where i have a box for my sound system amps, I Put a usb hub in there, so i can connect a remote control, wireless keyboard with mouse pad, and a mobile broadband dongle, Also the USB TV stick has its own USB Port directly connected to the laptop. The audio ouput runs to the stereo auxillary input so the sound can play out of the car speaker system. It looks fairly neat as I wanted it too and just fits nicely between the front sunroof and where the roof goes upward. I mounted the Infrared reciever for the remote control in the roof lining just behind the rear sunroof so the signal bounes off the screen or the windscreen back to the reciever and it works whatever direction you point it. Thats pretty much it really, I still need to sort out the aerial for the Live Tv as the one I got off ebay seems to be rubbish!! and I am going to put a second battery under the bonnet to power it and all the amps and stereo so it doesnt kill the car battery and also starting wont cut out the laptop!!!
  16. Hi In my 300tdi I have put kenwood speakers all round although these probably are not the best speakers in the world they certainly do sound good and are great value for money. I feel if you are going to have only 2 speakers in the vehicle standard 4" size speakers arnt going to give enough bass kick and In my opinion you may be best to go for a 5.25" Pioneer. Issue is I know the locations of the speakers in the 200tdi are different as I used to have one but I really can't remember if there is enough room to accomadate them in the front doors. Im sure someone else would be able to throw more light on this for you or may even have a good suggestion of what speakers to go for. The disco is quite a difficult vehicle to add a custom sound system as I have found out and even had to cut away the rear doors just to accomadate 4" speakers. Regards Michael

Ivan Thank you!! You are correct just happend to see Tim who used to own the disco and he said he put the 200 style lights on the back when he had the vehicle but never changed the flasher unit!! As its all working and not causing any problems and towing lights still work fine I will leave it be, would hate to interfere with it and create a problem while its working!!! Many Thanks everyone for all your help very greatfull!!! Off now to carry on my project of fitting an incar media centre!! Kind Regards Michael Re

Mine continues to flash even if the trailer is not connected!!!!!!! Regards Michael
  19. Just attaching a few photos of how I did the speaker upgrages in the doors. As you can see in the front doors i have replaced the top speakers with 4" and added another set of 4" speakers in the pockets at the bottom. In the rear doors i have put 4" speakers where the electric window switches were and moved the switches to just below the handles. To put the speakers in the rear doors I had to cut a little bit of the door metal away but other than that it was quite easy to do and the switches have enough cable length to move them. Regards Michael

Hi ashtray My problem is that they continue to stay on which leads me to suspect that it needs a different flasher unit. Its a 97R 300tdi GS spec not sure if it had the dual lights from new or if they were added later. Regards Michael
  21. Roger I have and highly recommend the Kenwood KDC-BT8041U It has Bluetooth Handsfree and comes with an external microphone Prior to this I had a couple of other Sony Bluetooth head units with built in microphones for hands free and the sound quality for calls was poor as everyone said they could harldy hear me. So after quite a bit of time back and forth from halfords we established the discovery is noisier than most vehicles and drowns out the sound of the inbuilt microphone and they eventually upgraded me to the Kenwood Head Unit and the Call quality is fantastic. Wish I had gone for that one first time round would of saved me alot of hassle!! The Kenwood HeadUnit has alot of other features which you dont have to use but I find very useful, It can be set to automatically download your phone book, so you can leave your phone in your pocket and still make calls and also see who is calling etc It has a USB connection as well for Ipods/MP3 players or just put your music on a normal USB stick I feel its a nice looking unit that isnt in your face but the controls and displays are clearly readable. Unfortuantly it is £159 on the halfords website at the moment, But if you print off the page on the website they will match the price in store!! I know its at least £10 more than you wanted to pay but I made the mistake of going for what I thought was a good unit at a good price with the Sony units and was very dissappointed. I paid £179 for the kenwood one in the end I believe and still feel its worth every penny of that. I have had it since August last year so it has had a pretty good testing Link to product on halfords website, You may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...tegoryId_165474 Kind Regards Michael

I have the opposite problem I have a 300tdi with 4 indicators on the rear and when I indicate I have the trailer light signal is coming on!! Is it just a case of fitting a different rated flasher unit, if so which one would I need? Regards Michael
  23. I have upgraded my 300tdi with kenwood speakers and amps and Bluetooth headunit. A roof mounted laptop media centre is the thing im working on now and is nearly finished hopefully!! I replaced the Std front door speakers with 4inch tweeter cones and then also mounted 4inch woofer cones inside the pockets so got 4 speakers in the front. In the rear doors i took out the electric window switches and put 4inch tweeter cones there as there was no speakers in these doors. The windows switches are now just below the the grab handle. In the rear pilars I replaced the speakers with 5.25inch tweeter cones. And in the boot I have made a wooden box to house the amps and got a removable subwoofer on top. I am making an mdf frame to house 2 6x9s in the boot door. So far i only have an amp powering the sub and the original speaker positions are powered by the headunit and the sound quality is amazing as it is, Cant wait to hear it once i put the other 2 amps in to power all the main speakers and the 6x9s. I have also put in all new speaker cables all round so i dont have to butcher the existing wiring etc. See the photos attached of the subwoofer and amp housing. I will take some more photos of where i have placed the other speakers if that helps anyone. Regards Michael
  24. Stu yeah it still has the Bearmach springs on the rear. I changed the front springs to new ones from a 200tdi as i was told these were stiffer than the 300tdi ones and they did a good job of making the disco sit level. The handling is strange sometimes it is ok like today it seemed fine. I am going to check the steering box as much as i can tommorow when i finish off my serivce. I am tempted to swap the back springs as i dont really need the lift, its mainly an on road vehicle which tows now and again and has to go through the odd flood or two. I also have a new set of rear monroe shocks left over from my old 200tdi disco so i might swap these too. Cheers Michael
  25. Thanks Gary I will have a thorough look through as much as I can, Let me know if you have any joy. I had MOT on it today and it passed with an advisory on NSR wheel bearing so gonna check these too. Rolly not quite sure wat you mean about the rear arch. Cheers Michael
