  1. Hi all,

I have recently fitted an uprated intercooler and tweaked the fuel pump a little bit on my 200tdi. I would like to fit a boost gauge and wondered what would be the best one to get either Bar or PSI, electronic or mechanical as many abound on the "Bay of E"?

Just out of interest what should I expect to see as A top limit to the boost for my 200tdi to be in a safe range?

    Cheers

  2. A few pages back there's link to an official EU blog post denying the intention to ban modified vehicles. At least one LR comic has parroted this.

The problem for us is (IMHO) that any change in legislation as a result of this will be enforced to the letter by empire-builders at VOSA. Remember the 31mph motorbike test?

I'd like to see a bit more of a breakdown of this "5 people a day die due to technical failure" - what's the betting the distrubtion is virtually zero in the UK & high in places where roadworthiness testing appears to be optional? Won't name countries but I'm sure quite a few of us have been on holiday to countries within the EU & thought "holy <deity>! How's that shed on the road how come it hasn't been stopped by the <country's> rozzers!"

I would agree that a break down would be iluminating as to what proportion of the albeit unfortunate deaths from poor mods comes from the UK.

My wife is Cretan and that is part of EU and the vehicles I see being used on their rural roads are often astounding some are straight from Mad-Max or Whacky Races held together with coat hanger wire and tires as bald if not balder than I am  .

My point is if the whole EU is agregated and a figure is generated for deaths occuring due to bad modifications or poorly maintained vehicles then we are penalised due in my example to the Greek lack of implementation of their MOT :( .

  3. Most of the other forums think that this has been blown out of proportion by misunderstanding which hasnt been helped by bad reporting. Some have also suggested that UKIPs have encouraged these inncaurate (if thats what they are) rumours to further their cause.

The one thing that does worry my in Jimmys post is that their is a suggestion that we need to get our vehicles re-mot'd everytime a modification is made. How minor the modification has to be to warrant this might mean that it is sensible, or a complete PITA. However, i suspect, if this is the only thing that changes with our legislation, then we can carry on as normal really.

I think given the gist of the reply from UKIP regarding my enquiries that perhaps they saw the mileage in terms of anti EU sentiment that would be generated by a very draconian proposal by Brussels and were slightly disingenuous in their reply.

Their reply went down the line of and of course I am paraphrasing:

“This proposal will pass into law but we will repeal it if you vote us in next time”.

Dealing with Politian’s always makes me feel unclean.. :glare:

From what I can gather the situation regarding re-submitting the vehicle for testing after any modification is currently the standard in Germany. Looking on the bright side this is better than an outright ban of all non “vanilla” vehicles but it is still an erosion of a freedom enjoyed at present but I suppose even though its a PITA, if it weeds out the badly modified and downright dangerous all to the good IMHO

  4. Update with reply from Green MEP:

    Dear James ,

Keith has asked me to thank you for your e-mail and to respond to it on his behalf. I apologise for the delay in doing so - our office receives a large volume of constituent correspondence on a daily basis, and it sometimes takes us longer to respond than we would like.

As you are aware, the European Commission has recently proposed legislation to tighten and harmonise across the EU the existing requirements for vehicle roadworthiness tests. This proposal comes under the 'Roadworthiness Package' which aims to enhance road safety and to reduce traffic-related emissions.

Technical faults in vehicles are a major road safety concern, with more than 5 people dying onEurope's roads every day in accidents linked to technical failure. A recent impact assessment on road safety in the EU has shown that the measures proposed by the Commission under the Roadworthiness Package could save more than 1,200 lives a year and avoid more than 36,000 accidents linked to technical failure. Please see the following press release from the European Commission for more information:

    http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/12/555&

Keith is committed to improving road safety and reducing traffic-related emissions, and works hard to promote these issues through EU legislation. In principle, Keith and his fellow Greens/EFA colleagues in the European Parliament therefore welcome the aims of this proposal. However, it is important to be aware that the proposal is currently only in draft form and is in the very beginning stages of negotiations between the European Parliament (made up of MEPs) and the Council (made up of national ministers). The details of the draft legislation are therefore open to change, which makes it impossible to say at this stage whether Keith and his colleagues will support or oppose the legislation.

Upon reading your e-mail, Keith was concerned about the potential impacts of this proposal on the historic and modified car industries and agrees with you that EU legislation should not prevent vehicle owners from carrying out modifications, as long as they are not dangerous. These concerns were raised at a recent meeting of the Transport and Tourism committee, and Keith waspleased hear reassurance from the Commission that the proposals will not outlaw vehicle modifications. Having researched the issue, it seems this has been an unfortunate misunderstanding of the proposed legislation, stemming from inaccurate reporting on the issue across theUK. The legislation in factstates that for vehicles which have been modified between roadworthiness tests, it will now be a legal requirement to resubmit the vehicle for testing to ensure that the modification is in line with safety requirements. I am sure you will agreewithKeith that this is a common-sense measure which represents a positive step towards protecting the lives of road users.

Keith is sympathetic to concerns that some of the proposals may imply extra costs for road-users and testers. However, given the number of road accidents this legislation is expected to prevent each year, Keith would rather see lives saved than safety measures not adopted because of price.

It is also worth noting that the frequency of roadworthiness testing in the UK will not change under the proposed legislation. The current system in the UK, under which vehicles must be submitted for testing 3 years after registration and then every year following that (3 - 1 - 1 system), is in fact more stringent that the Commission's proposals for a minimum requirement of a 4 - 2 -1 system.

I hope that this information has been useful and goes some way to allay your concerns. Keith understands that this is a very important issue for you, so please be assured that Keith values your views and has considered your objections carefully. He has also asked me to let you know that he has raised your concerns with the Green transport advisors, and together they will carefully consider any adverse impacts of the legislation on the historic and modified car industries in any upcoming negotiations on the legislation.

As previously mentioned, Keith is strongly committed to improving road safety, both at EU level and across his constituency. For some examples of the work that Keith has been doing in the European Parliament and across his constituency in this area, please see the transport section of his website at:

  5. Hi I finally got the questionnaire I received in reply to my letter to David Cameron scanned to PDF and I am posting it here so if you want you can download it print it and send it to the PM or your MEP or constituency MP. Now you may have seen this form before, I don’t know, however

I thought if people printed this and sent the questionnaire perhaps we could achieve a more directed/targeted campaign than perhaps writing lots of letters with divergent views and issues.

    Cheers

  6. Yes, more crank load and more work for the head gasket, but honestly, not by much. You're not going double on power or owt daft like that.

And they stand a fair bit anyway. CAT 3406 is 425 hp on mechanical govenor but will do 500 on electronic. Same basic dodad inside.

In my book "Diesel Technology" it says how two identical type engines might be sold as 320 and 350 HP. The 350 is dearer to cover the extra warranty expected as the engine works harder.

    Thanks,

My old girl only goes out now and again and when I do take it out I dont thrash it so with what you are saying I should be ok for a while :i-m_so_happy:

  7. I fitted my new Allisport intercooler today on my 200tdi and tweaked the pump a little but less than the amount comonly suggested, no smoke to speak of just the usual puff of smoke at start up ...bloody hell what a difference :i-m_so_happy:

The question is have I shortened the life of my engine by doing this modification on the basis of "the light that burns so bright only burns half as long" and all that stuff?

Next phase the straight through exhaust ;) .

    Cheers

  8. no, discovery & defender downpipes are different, because the turbo outlet is in a different place, mine still runs a TD system complete & I haven't had any problems in 16 years since the Stainless steel system was fitted

Sorry to ask more questions but could I just get a 200tdi defender downpipe and fit it to my engine and then use the straight through mid-section and new tail pipe?

Are the defender td/ na petrol and 200tdi downpipes the same diameter at the manifold end, the bit that push fits to the outlet below the turbo manifold? Do they interchange or is it likely Land Rover have swapped the whole manifold in the engine conversion?

The images show the size of the manifold and a funny jointed bit down from the clamp fixing is this right or a bodge to fit the TD exhaust system.

I don’t want to labour the point it’s just I don’t want to buy a 200tdi down pipe only to find they changed the manifold to fit a td exhaust system and the new down pipe won’t fit because the manifold push fit bit is wrong given as someone mentioned there is a discrepancy in diameters between the td and 200tdi.

    Thanks

    James

  9. Thanks for the reply. I think a 200tdi downpipe is the way to go I guess as the bigger bore will let the engine breath better and I have a hankering to stick a bomb exhaust on instead of the back box thus loosing the end bit anyway so have resigned myself to the inevitable.

My engine is a Defender 200tdi are the down pipes universal i.e wether the engine was from a Discovery or Defender?

Bargain + Land Rover can those words even be used together?!!!!!!!! :hysterical:

  10. mine was a TD which has 3 bolt triangular flanges, yours was a TD iirc, so you'll need a pipe for a TD too

It was a 2.5 petrol back in the day. Would a td5 pipe fit as they seem to have a triangular flange or

Could I fit a new down pipe from the engine with oval flanges to suit and a new tail pipe with oval flanges mated to perhaps one of those bomb type tail pipes as the back box is a bit rusty anyway?

    Cheers

    James

  11. I recently bought a stainless steel straight through exhaust mid-section for my 200tdi 90 on the great bay of E. After enquiring if said pipe would fit my truck and being told that the description stated it fitted a 200tdi 90 It would be ok. The sarcasm was noted :glare: but having now a shed full of items that supposedly according to the seller fit a 200tdi and don’t :glare: , I thought it would be prudent to chance their ridicule and enquire.

Well the sun was shining this morning and so out I went with the new section of exhaust safe in the knowledge that it would fit because err they told me it would  !

Having un-wrapped the shrink wrap packing to my horror a blue label came into view (Britpart :o )

Oh well I thought too late now and anyway how wrong can you go with a pipe????

Well it doesn’t fit, the flanges at either end are almond shaped and mine are triangular with a bolt hole in the corners and to top it all it’s about 12” too long and the bends are in the wrong places.

Why would my defender 200tdi engine not be compatible with the pipe they sent is my vehicle an oddity? Have they got the wrong label on the pipe they sent? So many questions.

If I can get a refund from the vendors, can anyone recommend a stockist of straight through sections or give me a clue as to what type I need as I foolishly ordered a pipe compatible with a 200tdi 90 for my erm 200tdi 90 -_- .

    Any advice appreciated.

  12. J2J,

You sure the questionnaire isn't the DfT's consultation Nick Williams gave the forum's combined response to a couple of weeks back? (Circa page 10)

Encouraging response though - something for future leverage if nothing else. I've heard good things about DC as a constituency MP - whatever you think of him as a PM.

    Matt

(former resident of Clanfield in DC's constituency, though it was Douglas Hurd when I left!)

It could be the same I would have to check.

It's a start anyway.Clanfield nice place, just up the road!

  13. If I borrow tools they go back in the condition they arrived in, or I will replace anything I damage.

generally I'll only lend stuff to people I know to have the same habits. As people with this attitude tend to have a fair sized kit of their own, it's generally only special tools that get lent.

I've had more trouble with people plain losing my tools. I lent a chap a hammer at an event once - he managed to lose it while working under his truck in a grassy field! I feel he probably just couldn't be bothered to look properly.

That sucks! Did he replace it or pay up?

  14. Update:

Well I did receive a reply by post and I am going to fill in the questionnaire as suggested and return it.

I think that perhaps a few more letters to the very receptive Mr Cameron from forum members would be a good idea. I understand he may not be your particular constituency MP but he is the prime minister and it would serve to demonstrate the level of concern regarding this proposal.

    J2J

Perhaps I could copy the questionnaire and post it as a pdf any one could download it and print it and we could all send a copy........ ;)

  15. I have been in touch with Tony Baldry. MP who is a client of mine in my day job and after two attempts he replied stating he hadn’t seen my first communication as it had been filtered out by one of his team (thanks for letting me know). He told me that he couldn’t breech political etiquette and address my concerns because he was not my constituency MP (scuppering my back door approach)

However he did say he had personally forwarded my correspondence to my constituency MP David Cameron and I would be hearing from him soon (tick tock tick tock) nothing yet!

I will give it a little longer and I will follow it up with a good deal of political name dropping in the next letter/phone calls/texts etc. And post the response received if any.

All we can do is keep trying :(

  17. I watch the commentary here, I would love for the prime minister to read through our thoughts written in this thread, our concerns for our vehicles, our concerns for our friends who will be facing bankruptcy after it goes to print and enforcement as there will be no market to sell their parts to.

The worst of it is that throughout the years we have always been told that Great Britain is a FREE country and we are free as citizens to express ourselves, some of us do it through our vehicles, some through arts and crafts, equestrianism and market gardening, all of these things have major and quite critical thing in common, they every single one of them contributes to the economy, the economy requires people to spend their money, but people must have something they want to spend money on in order for them to spend it in the first place, I kept my old landy for years and years, spent more than £5000 on spares and accessories on it, and then there was the fuel costs, god knows on that one!! Then Excise duty for driving it on the road, insurances and MOTs every year, so that's a potential total of in excess of £10,000 over 8 years of owning an old series 3, and that's just me, one single solitary person. How many of us pay our insurance every year but never claim? How many people own a second vehicle, and spend a bit of cash on it with a little bit of a lift and some nice purposeful tyres, maybe a winch and bumper to add a bit of bling and that's just for a bit of laning and dragging the trailer to the tip to get shot of the hedge and grass cuttings on a Sunday morning? I wonder how far they will research the facts before they put in place this nonsense, it will affect lots of small industries too, and for Britain especially who threw away a lot of its engineering industry, there will be the death of what small manufacturers there are!! Ok there will still be some demand for winch bumpers, someone will still knock up chassis for replacements, but there will no longer be as greater demand from the everyday man who wants build it himself and add features better than factory standard, and what of machine shops where we get the heads skimmed or the cranks ground on what to jo bloggs on the street would otherwise be a scrap engine we spend our money in a business and keep our related industries going.

We are the end users for our vehicles but this nonsense will spread further and wider in Britain than any of the politicians could possibly fathom, the revenue losses and rise in unemployment should tell them to steer clear of it!!!!

    Well said that man!

  18. Any word from the press on this yet?

I don't mean an inch square with 30 words, where is the headlines of motorists having liberties crushed further by a bunch of tree hugging hiipies and a government scared of its own shadow and petrified of the eu!!!!

Not seen that one in the sun yet!!!!

Clarkson on his holidays? What about Mark Evans? 4x4 mad them two and well known and respected in the eyes of the public too!!!

Tried them all no reply....Chris Evans is more passionate about tuppence tax on a pasty than the errosion of freedom. Just puppets thats all they are. Dont expect any help from the "im alright Jack" celebs. I hope chitty chitty Bang Bang chuffing seizes solid. :angry2:

  19. Don't even joke about it, good chance you will get absolutely nothing, you will be allowed to own the vehicle but not keep or use it on the road.

It is possible but unlikely you might get offered the book trade in value for a standard vehicle of that age, modified parts etc would not be taken into consideration.

This isn't hypethetical, this is exactly what they did when the banned pistol shooting, you were required to hand in your property (you would go to prison if you didn't for illegal possetion) and told you might get the trade price unless you could prove it was worth more (not easy when it would be illegal to sell or own so not a lot a value). When exactly you got any money is an open question I handed in several thousand pounds worth in 1998 and am still waiting (at the time of the act an estimated 40% of claims from the SLR ban in 1988 were still outstanding some of them still are now). Quite a lot of the kit I didn't hand in for the money they were offering so is still sat in my loft, anyone want a reloading press and all the kit to make your own ammo?, which by a gap in the law can still be sold and owned completely legally with no form of licence, go figure!.

This is not apathy talking, but if you think of all the custom cars trikes and modified vehicles bikes included it would be a massive amount of vehicles removed and this would surely have a knock on effect to the companies supplying parts, services etc.

Before anyone accuses me of polyannarism would the government bring in this amendment knowing full well that many thousands have jobs will be lost?

I suppose the comparison to the handgun ban is valid but I would think that more people pre the handgun ban had modified (even if just cosmetic) cars than own hand guns, this is not to make light of your situation of course and I see the comparison.

I have spent the last four years messing about with my rather aged vehicle and would be heartbroken to think of it as scrap.

Does anyone know the position regarding custom cars in the most draconian state in the EU: Germany are they allowed at all or are they very heavily monitored and face more stringent tests?

The hunting ban agree or disagree was supported by the chattering sun-reading masses that on the whole probably think that all foxes wear tweed and appear on tv. This legislation if brought into being will impact a very very large proportion of them and perhaps the government would not have the ground swell of support it had on the hunting ban.

I have written to Chris Evans self-proclaimed petrol head (no reply thanks Chris) Tony Baldry MP(No reply thanks Tony) Jeremy Clarkson (No reply thanks Jeremy) Hammond same as, etc etc.

I think direct action is playing into the governments hands so a campaign on facebook and twitter would be a start. the more people that know about this the better. Lets pillary these people that set themselves up as enthusiasts. Perhaps they are not concerned as it doesn’t affect them. What you can bet they are concerned about is their public image that after all fuels their fat incomes.

Just some thoughts sorry if it turned into a rant. :(
