Sounds to me like a pinon bearing problem... I've got a post on it somewhere, will see if I can find it. Have you felt for any laternal lay in the rear/front pinion flanges on the axles?
If it is that then its the diff that needs changing not the axle. - with age, your transmission does get "loose" meaning between all the linkages you get play - add up all the play between the splined joints and gears you can get a lot of noise and nasty slapping when changing gear etc, but noise is mainly due to bearing play !Unless! you have some gear damage in which case they whine all the time and get slouder the faster you go. Pinon bearings in my experience get noisier when there is a change of power, i.e clutch engagment/disengagment...

Just for info,
Taken from wikipedia: Definition of Backlash.
"In mechanical engineering, backlash is the striking back of connected wheels in a piece of mechanism when pressure is applied. Another source defines it as the maximum distance through which one part of something can be moved without moving a connected part[1]. In the context of gears backlash, sometimes called lash or play, is clearance between mating components, or the amount of lost motion due to clearance or slackness when movement is reversed and contact is re-established. For example, in a pair of gears backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth.
Theoretically, the backlash should be zero, but in actual practice some backlash must be allowed to prevent jamming. It is unavoidable for nearly all reversing mechanical couplings, although its effects can be negated. Depending on the application it may or may not be desirable. Reasons for requiring backlash include allowing for lubrication, manufacturing errors, deflection under load and thermal expansion."
Thanks Mav,
How can I find out, any tell tale signs its the pinion bearing I could look for?
Cheers

How do.
Could you elaborate on backlash noisy? backlash is imprtant when setting gears so they all have it - do you mean transmission noise, i.e. play when coming on and off the power?
Mav
Hi,
The noise is a minor clunk when changing gear and releasing the clutch if I am clumsy but that I know is partly me .
The noise I am referring to is a sort of rumbling whirring rattle (difficult to explain) I thought it was my jate rings vibrating against the chassis at the rear to start with and the sound magnifying through the chassis section but no luck.
This happens when I come off the power and start to slow down; it seems to be worse sometimes than others.
Is backlash a sign of imminent failure or just an indicator of a worsening chronic problem?
If imminent could I fit a TD5 Disco rear axle as there seems to be a load of those about at reasonable money?
Cheers

Hi All,
I thought things were going too well....
I am having what I think are back lash noises coming from the rear axle on my 200tdi 90.
The axles I think are from a TD5 however I don’t know if the donor vehicle was a Disco or Defender that was pre my ownership. The question is can the problem be fixed and how bad/difficult/expensive is it to rectify? Or is it a case of replacing the axle?
Cheers

Hi All,
Anyone recommend one/few gentle lanes near the Oxon/Wilts border?
Taking the wife as she is trying to understand this Land Rover thing that "takes up all my time"

The pipes are push fitting but I cant see any way of getting the actual fitting out.
Mine are just like this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=44495

Hi All,
I was looking today at fitting my new breathers and want to replace the standard push fit type fitting with the more durable right angle ones I have got.
I have had a look at the fitting but cant see how you extract it, that's the fitting not the pipe by the way.
Any tips

True..most crooks I encounter (the art worlds full of em) don't relish giving out their phone number or address for that matter.TBH if I were a buyer I'd ask for the serial number too. Does the chap have good feedback, if so ask him for his phone number and give him a call, you can tell a lot from actually speaking to someone.
-
Im sure you can register the serial number with your name/address/etc, so if it gets nicked you have proof that i was yours,
worst case you dont have it registered and they register with the serial number, turn up and claim its theirs and you have no proof its yours,
like i say though "WORST CASE"
Yep I take your point.just a thought as to why they may have asked.

Hi,
I fitted gas rams to my bonnet and was horrified at some of the prices of the rams. I opted for some from a company that makes motor homes and burger wagons and sells the stuff they use on their vehicles. If you find out the strut size you need you could save a wedge
Good luck

I know you can make your own but sometimes its nice not to have to source all the bits for a kit its nice just to buy one and done with..or not in your case
If its any help I have just bought a kit from these people and they were fine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370627997150?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1998wt_982
I hope you get sorted out

Those trailers are as you know the fastest item to get pinched. Perhaps the prospective buyer wants to check with the police if its nicked, not suggesting anything by the way .
I don't know if there is a national database or something?

bit it's not the last bolt then
It keeps em guessing though!

I have got it.... to stop this happening start on the last bolt first

Well on Sunday I fitted my new steering pump (ntc9070)and both drive belts while I was at it all went well and I even managed to stay dry lying underneath the 90 …Until I decided to increase the tension on the pump belt and one of the bloody silly tapering headed flange bolts rounded like it was made from Cheddar…bugger. However checking again the deflection, I think it’s right at about 10-12mm so no need to undo that bolt yet but I have just got some of those IRWIN Bolt-Grips and hope they will get the damned thing out.
Why do they fit the pump with seemingly tapered headed bolts, the flange bit I can understand but tapering what’s that about?

That looks very tidy. Mine seems to be constantly covered in oily hand prints and bird poo! Oh well I suppose it adds to the patina .
Just out of interest is the chassis very ropey then as the truck looks for as much as you can see from an image as if its been looked after?

Nice truck

As somewhat a novice oils are often a bewildering area because sometimes the manuals are suggesting one thing and the greater consensus another. I suppose specification and formula change and develop from the date of the publication of the manuals. That's why I like to check and find the forum so much help,
Thanks Guys

I have decided to change the oil in the gearbox and transfer box of my 200tdi (engine is early 90s vintage) am I right in thinking ATF for the gearbox? Its an LT77 I think, I don't know if the same oil is used for the transfer box?
