  1. hi all, sorry for delay just wanted to give p38 a chance to drain battery, but it's still going on first turn of key :):i-m_so_happy: , fixed window, and also put in a hot start kit on p38, had heavy frost thee other morning and still started first time, and so did d90 with the old p38 battery on, bit baffled to why it all happened, more good news p38 passed mot yesterday one advisery o/s rear brake pad slightly low :P;):):D cheer's defender dinky

  2. hi, me again, battery on my d90 starts first click of the key, so exchanged it with the one on the wife's p38,started first time, but so did the d90 with the p38 battery on, i'm waiting now to see if p38 drains my battery, off d90, noticed something today the suspension did'nt rise, have to wait and see now,dd

  3. Does sound like a duff battery to me. If it starts of the jump leads and runs fine then the alternator is doing it's job. Even with the healthiest of batteries you wouldn't get far if the alternator wasn't charging (well, you won't with the TD5 so I wouldn't think so with the P38 either). Also you don't say there are other problems such as air suspension not raising etc etc, so again, sounds like the alternator is doing the work.

Most motor or fleet factors who supply batteries would be able to test yours for you for free.

hi, asked the wife if everything works ok, she said yes except for passenager side window gets jammed halfway down, i had a look took door panel off tried window and yes it got jammed halfway, what i did notice was that the galv plate i think motor is fix to, is bent up when operating the window, looks to me a bolt or rivet is missing that hold the plate in position, could it be a live wire has been servere and touching the car body, reason why i think this is because i charge a battery today fully, she just gone out and wouldn't start again had to jump it, now jump leads from donor veichle 1 to positive and 1 on a good earth such as engine mount tried to start her up and WOW sparks flashes mega time, doe's this tell me that the car body is live somewhere and that's why it's draining the battery, having a look tomorrow to dark, other than that the car runs great, cheer' defender dinky

  4. I've no idea where the disk came from but I doubt it's the gearbox. Core plugs are a result of the process that aloows the cylinder block to be hollow for the water jacket.

hi, not going to beleive this ,but my bro came last night and said can't use grease gun lost the disc thingy that fits under the spring to push the grease out of the tube,:hysterical::hysterical: cheer's dd

  5. hi all, had some strange noises coming from gearbox lt77 diso conversion to my 90 with engine, noises happen under load, i can be free wheeling down a slope nothing, has soon as i touch accelrater pedal droning sound, so i had alook underneath and found a dome shape disc covered in grease by where the rear radius arm bolts to the chassis driver's side, don't know how long it's been there was'nt there 7mths ago because i had chassis sandblasted, galv, and powercoated, going to check oil levels tomorrow any thoughts welcome, cheer's defender dinky :unsure::D

  6. oops, Just saw that it's a P38 you are talking about. Measuring the current would require to disconnect one of the battery poles and that comes with a whole procedure in a P38 due to the alarm system.

I don't have particular experience with that procedure and I therfore step back and would ask some p38 experts to describe how this can be done properly.

I would start with simple measurement of voltage between the battery pole. this, at least, would give you an indication of a possible problem.

...if you have never used a multimeter you probably might not have one and it could be the easier way to get the battery checked in a garage.

if you have one, set it on 20V DC and connect the test tips to the battery pole after a longer drive (no ignition) in the morning (no ignition) and with the engine running, and report the readings. we will take it from there then.

hi, will have to wait till weekend, son's a sparky he will have one, but still on holiday. cheer's anyway will let you know weekend dd
  7. Well, in 70% of all cases the battery has a defect (one cell damaged, insufficient fluid, or just old\worn). If it starts by jumpstarting on the battery terminals it is unlikely that a connection is bad.

Check the battery voltage in the morning and after a drive. With the engine not running ist should be well above 12 volts (12.2-12.6) for a healthy battery. To check the alternator, the voltage should come up to 13.8v with the engine running.

There is still the chance of discharge whilst standing and you could measure that by checking the current in line with the battery terminals. However if your multimeter would be ok to do so, but you are not entirely sure how to measure the current please ask. You wouldnt be the only one who has transformed his multimeter to ash by doing it wrong, and this includes myself.

hi, well to be honest i have never used a multimeter, so yes i would be looking for advice how to use it properly. ;):D cheer's defender dinky

  8. hi, the wife's p38, everytime we go to start it the battery always seems low on charge, it only has to see the jump leads and away it goes first time, what could it be , it has a heavy duty battery on it or could it be the starter motor which turns very slow, or is it the alternator, how do i check for the right answere, already checked earth leads taken them off and cleaned them, thanks for any help in advance, dd

  9. Problem when pulling away and then moving into second and gathering speed ive got a noise that is best described as like a loose jubilee clip around front propshaft, tends to die away as more speed and gear change achieved. This afternoon thought I would try in low ratio and found it hard to get any engagement at all, did in the end but high and low not very positive at all. Can anyone give me any pointers please

hi, i had this noise jingling on my prop turned out to be mud sheild on prop flange t/box end, took prop off and retighten the big nut, defender dinky

  10. Hi

You need a hot start kit from Ebay around £20 fitted in 10 mins.

Common fault with the BWW RR my one was the same started first thing

then refused to start when warm.

The kit fools the ECU that the car is cold, works a treat no futher

    problems.

    Regards

    Brian

hi brian, any reason why it's just started going wrong , wife's had car four years now, thanks again, dd

  11. hi all, range rover p38 97 bmw 2.5 engine, this problem has only been happening the last few weeks, when we turn the car off and try to restart the engine it won't have it,stuck on garage forcourt half hour waiting for the car to start, the glow plug light won't even light up until the car has cooled down, the more you try is only running the battery down, you can always tell when it's ready because the glowplug light stays on as normal starting, now a few weeks ago i changed the water pump and while i was at it i change the belt, is there something i have missed, do i have to retension the belt. any help gratefully received. cheer' defender dinky

  12. hi all before i order this oem hub seal item, have alook at the link in my first post? corteco on packaging, but on read up it says cortico, is this just a printing error, i have sent message to supplier but can't get an answere,:huh: cheer's dd

  13. hi all,d90 200tdi 1987, this squealing sound started very small but now seems to be very frequent and lasting longer, when i put my head by front off side wheel it sound really loud, but when i put my head under the bonnet i struggle to hear it over the engine, also i noticed by accident that when i lean on the wing it stops, and when driving it seems to stop or pause when coming to a junction when braking, but i can't find out what it is, pressed everythng pulled evrything incase it's something rubbing, to no avail any ideas. cheer's defender dinky

  14. Not really, 99% of theft can be stopped with just a deterrent, if that is a shiny thing that the hoodie attempting to undo doesn't work with a spanner, he will move on.

I think TC probably has it...

wondering if the key grabs the upper part and pulls it down to lock on to the underside like a lightbulb affect and then you put a m10 stud in it, just letting my imagination run away with me. :) defender dinky

  15. You could use some of these:

    nut.jpg

Which will be launched shortly by a company somewhere near here!

    winch.jpg

Both the silver and blue bit are perfectly round and smooth with no edges to grip on. The blue bit is free to spin on the silver bit once tightened. They are removable and re-usable using the supplied key. They will be available in M10 only, for bumper bolts and winch mounting bolts.

This isn't really an advert - as they have not been launched yet more a give-away / competition!

I will give a free set of four plus a key to the first person who can correctly explain how the torque is transmitted from the key to the nut (remember both bits are circular and smooth).

It does not use friction and the key will transmit enough torque to shear an M12 bolt.

hi, all the keys would have to be different other wise it would be pointless, thieves would just buy a set, just a thought, defender dinky

  16. Is it displaying any warning lights? Is the compressor running while it's sat on the stops refusing to rise?

hi task, no warning lights and yes pump running, also do you no part number for centre exhaust box passenger side or has anybody got one in the midlands area, for p38 dt 97 cheer's defender dinky

  17. hi all, the wife's p38 1997 dt, was on the bump stops yesterday morning went out for about for 20 minute drive 10 minutes thre stopped for about 15 minutes and drove back and it didn't rise until we pulled up outside the house, same this morning on the bump stops,is there anything i can fix myself,( as i have a defender90 and do all my own work on that)or is there an archive somewhere i could follow, thank's in advance for replies, :) defender dinky

hi, this problem with air suspension i left it for a few days and now it has corrected it self, could it be a sensor or something simliar relay etc, cheer's defender dinky
