  3. Hi

the last alternator i had stopped working and on further investigation the wire from the battery had decided to weld itself to the casing of the alternator and subisquently it stopped working.

I got a second hand alternator from a 300Tdi Disco with air con (120A i think) i had to change the pully over to get the belt to fit as the one on the end was bigger.

The alternator was kicking out 14.3A of juice to the batteries when i tested it at home, Ideal problem solved i thought.

At the next event i went to a week later the battery warning light came on and upon checking the alternator it had stopped working.

Is there something in my loom thats caused it to go wrong (cant think of anything) or was i just unlucky with the one i bought?

    Thanks

    Tris

hi, on mine i have a earth wire off alternator bracket to chassis, 200tdi, is your earth intact, defender dinky

  4. It may be something really simple like it has thrown a wheel balancing weight. Also do a quick check on wheel bearings by lifting each wheel in turn just off and wiggle is by hand side to side & top and bottom. If there is any play wheel bearing might just need tightening. But if you spin it and there is a rough sounding noise, bearing is shot. But if UJ's are fine I would have the prop shafts re-balanced. There is a outside chance if your break pedal on first push goes almost all the way down and second push is firm that a brake disc is bent.

hi, sorry to poach the thread, but how do you rebalance the prop shafts as mine needs to be done i think, it damaged two diff seals in a month, cheer's defender dinky

  5. hi all d90 200tdi conversion, i have a grinding noise again on the front diff, changed uj's on front prop noise went for a while now returned, had a look tonight and found that the diff flanged can be moved up and down about 3or 4mm and side to side, thinking that my prop could be out of balance tried that too and found that moved aswell about 3mm on the sleeve joint, is this normal for the prop to do this, removed prop and diff flange and i could push and pull out pinion shaft 5/6mm, up and down side to side aswell, something tells me this is not normal, so has anyone got a link on how to change pinion bearing and overhall diff, i only found oil seal change, any response would be gratefully received, cheer's ;):) defender dinky

  6. Hi folks, i thought my vehicles problems were over but again (after several months of peace ..disaster struck again)the power suddenly failed on my 110 csw whilst towing a horsebox on dual carriageway with nearly disastrous consequences ! with lorries steaming from up behind. I have had the opinions of quite a few people and have never really found the cause. i have had the fuel pump checked.Local LR garage suggest could be faulty wiring ? but they dont deal with vehicles as old as mine ..(1998) local garage doesnt want to know saying he doesnt know much about immobilisers. The mysterious thing is the problem seems to go away as quick as it arrived and things return to normal. Wondered if the immobiliser was faulty but wife was driving this time and says the engine still continued to tick over just no power to pull. Any ideas welcome folks. its a shame because its a nice vehicle otherwise. I dont know if forum regulator will allow this Q but nothing ventured...

hi, the only experience i have had with loss of power is when my intercooler pipe was'nt connected properly, in your case could be one has colapsed, just a thought  defender dinky

  7. Just been browsing ebay and seen this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Defender-TD5-/270577986943?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3effb46d7f

Now does that look a little fishy to you? he has both the front and rear axles for sale aswell.

his reasons for breaking a '04 td5 90 with 54k on the clock "broke due to getting a new vehicle"

Im sorry, but thats GOT to be a stolen vehicle being broken up!!

we could always ask seller a question??? but what dd

  8. Been a long day, but am I reading this right ?, aren't the bump stops on the chassis ?, do you mean between the bump stops & the axle ?, if so have a standard hieght 90 here you can come & measure if you want

    John

hi john, my mistake  only my front end seems to be a bit higher than the back, but this is how i bought it and just curious that's all cheer's dd

  9. hi, i have a p38 r. reg bmw engine 2.5td, noticed a water leak this morning seems to be coming from behind the pulleys any idea's any easy solutions,it's the wife car, so as soon as i fix it, less earache i get, cheer's defender dinky

  10. hi all, had a steering problem for a while now, got a couple of days off so why not have ago, right, bled it to no avail, new balljoints still the same, drop arm was leaking change pas box still same, now today i took off tackrods, drag linkwith the damper on, passenger wheel moves freely, but driver's side ok until it straightens upthen it feels as if it's snagging on something really bad, done preload set at 3.60kg as in work manual, anybody got the answere asap cheer's defender dinky

  11. hi,just been under truck and according to mine which works fine your arm seems to be on the wrong way round, on the bottom of your arm is facing to the back of the gearbox where its linked up, but on mine it faces to the front of the truck,it might be that you are pushing against something thast won,t move because the angle is to cute, sorry no phto,s i don't know to up load them to my computer off my phone yet, if you not sorted i will get small son to do it for me, i am talking about the right angle at the bottom of the arm, hope i have axplained it properly for you :):) dd

  12. Hi All,

Your help is required please with transmission noise diagnosis, but first a little history...

    My truck is a V8 90 with 4 speed ZF auto, 1.41:1 LT230, and standard rover axles/diffs.

I recently fitted a another LT230 (for a ratio change). I fitted a new cross drilled transfer gear and bearings in this. Bearing preloads were checked during assembly. Intermediate shaft was removed to facilitate the preload check, then refitted and checked again.

The ZF had a new output shaft fitted with the longer splines to suit the cross drilled input gear. The bolt securing this was Loctited and torqued up as per the book.

I also had the rear diff and shafts out to reseal the leaking diff to axle joint.

After fitting I drove the Ninety for a week with no undue noises or anything odd. Then all of a sudden I have this noise occur, that as far as I can tell is road speed, not engine speed related.

The noise is not easy to describe - something along the lines of a high pitch whirring is about the best I can come up with. It becomes evident after about 15 MPH, does not increase in volume but does increase in pitch. It is not the kind of noise that I'm inclined to ignore but is easily drowned out with some music :o

First thoughts were 'have I forgotten to fill something with oil?' All oils have since been checked, including stuff that had not been touched (front diff & swivels & auto box), nothing was missing but the front diff oil looked a bit goopy so I changed that.

Also checked there is nothing rubbing on the tyres, props or engine pulleys. All UJs have been recently serviced.

I am at quite a loss as to what else to check really. My first suspicion was the new trf box, but everything looked healthy enough inside and rotated as it should.

Sorry this has got a bit long, but has anybody got any ideas please??????

hi,i had this a month ago seemed to be coming from front end, so i checked uj's on front props, and changed them still the same, took prop off drove with difflock noise went, so i thought it was the front diff so i changed that, noise came back after a few days, got under car again, and there seemed to be alot of play in out put shaft of t/box, so now looking to change roller bearing, but saying that there's oil coming out of front diff again so it might even be pinion bearings, hoping it's only oil seal, also had a little vibration around gear stick area, never rains but pour's :(:) defender dinky

  13. You will most likely need a puller to get the pinion head bearing off, but you can do it by applying some "warmth" to it and use a persuading device to get it off. just not too much heat near the pinion head and be careful not to hit the teeth. Gears are F strong though so you don't need to treat it with kid gloves ;)

We have got a write up/how to coming out in either this months or next months LRO Mag (i don't which yet as i haven't seen it).

    Steve

hi steve, could i get this lro mag from w h smith's. cheer's dd

  14. hi all, found a tech on how to replace pinion seals but not the bearings anyone got any info for me, diff leaking, flange on t/box has movement have the tech for that one,i already have a spare diff so might be better to work on,on the bench as regards replacing bearings, cheer's defender dinky

  15. hi all, d90 1987 deisel, steering box bled it no end of times then seems great, after 15/20 minutes driving stiff steering all over again, but i have noticed oil leaking from bottom of drop arm coming out of steering box if oil is coming out could it be sucking air in at the same time, is it best to buy a seal kit for drop arm or just buy a second hand steering box, :(:( defender dinky

  16. hi, when i did my disco 200tdi conversion to d90 i used down pipe off disco and cut the flange off the end of exhaust box leaving enough on, to weld a flange from a disco pipe back on the exhaust box and used all the back end of td exhaust pipe that all the brackets fit ;):) defender dinky

  17. they are slightly heavier but a quicker way of pulling the shafts from the front diff is to just unbolt each wheel station and pull the whole lot out far enough to get the shafts out of the diff, brake lines may limited the ability to do this depending on how long they are!

hi, just to let you all know diff sorted, exchanged it with the spare disco on ene i had all grinding noise gone, :):):D thanks again for your replies and advice, defender dinky
