  1. Your wanting to know what parts from the disco will fit your 90?

    Engine and wheels will go.

The lift kit may or may not work, Disco weighs a lot more than the defender, but has much softer springing as standard, so you'd need to check the spring rates out before you go changing them.

Axles are useful, gets you disk brakes on the rear and front could be a spare.

Steering box might be useful as a spare or upgrade if your 90 doesnt have PAS.

Transmission wont fit, but the transfer box could be fitted to improve fuel economy and lower RPM's in gear for quieter motorway driving. Front prop might be the same length as a spare.

thanks for your reply and advice defender dinky

  2. hi all,i have now a discovery 200tdi complete with a lift kit on , descent wheels, now i would like to know what could i use from it for my defender 90 1987 td upgrade, besides the engine 141000 miles, wheels and lift kit, loads of service receipts so it has been looked after in the passed, MOT failure, j reg 1992, and possibly talk to someone closer to home incase i get stuck abit later on. cheer's :) defender dinky,

  3. They will fit, but will rub on arches off road. Width is the problem on that size. On standard offset wheels they will reduce your turning circle and you'll have to adjust your steering lock stops to stop them rubbing on the front radius arm.

hi steveG thanks for reply ;) defender dinky

  4. well that is what iv done mate i mounted the gear box on the original mounts so the propshafts off my 90 would fit this did mean the gear levers are further back than normal and i now have no center seat. the seat box had to be cut and shut a bit to get it to fit and i have got the center consol out of the disco inbetween the seats at the moment to make it look a bit neater.

then fitted the engine on its new mounts further forward than the original engine was fitted but still plenty of room for everything else to be fitted around it.

and the only problem i had with the axels was the input flange on the rear one and that was easily sorted by ordering some bits from ashcroft transmissions to fit my 90 propshaft

i can take some pics if it would help and maybe email them to you

hi trti6i7 , sent post cheer's defender dinky

  5. I have Fitted a 300 tdi engine, gearbox and axles from a p plate discovery to my f plate 90. it was relativly easy to do but you only want to change the engine i guess and i didnt have to worry about the old gear box fitting the engine.

as far as the engine fitting all i had to do was cut the old mounts off and fab up some new ones and weld them on it the rite place,

all pipe work and stuff were easy to fit and match up as was the wireing harness only thing is im not sure if the glow plugs work so need to check that really at some point, although it starts fine as its direct injection just one cold day it might let me down

hi trt1617, what it is my friend has a disco 300tdi, failed mot big time, if possible was going to change engine & gearbox, if possible to swap axles and anti roll bars as well to my 90 d reg. cheer's defender dinky

  6. Just done this to mine. It was all done and dusted in a weekend. The backplate needed drilling and tapping for one stud and a couple need removing as they don't line up. Used the 200 engine mounts on the 300. Made a small cut and shut on the o/s chassis mount and notched the n/s engine mount to allow oil filter clearance. Modified the 300 exhaust downpipe to meet the rest of the system and had to change to the 300 rad as the 200/300 oil cooler pipe fittings are different. The only bit i had to get done professionally was to lengthen the oil cooler pipes by 5" as the engine sits at the back of the engine bay on the short bellhousing gearbox fitted to my defender. I would rather have this than fit it up and over the front axle as per the later defenders. A mix and match of the original plus the disco donor intercooler and cooling pipes saw everything plumbed in.

The Defender already had an electric fan which is good as the viscous is now to far from the rad to work and i fitted a remote oil filter kit onto the inner wing to save space and allow engine mount clearance. The bonus is that using my vacuum oil extractor i no longer need to crawl underneath to do oil and filter changes. I have also fitted a full width intercooler and adjusted the injection pump and now it really goes well.

hi paul, i made a printing error , changing from 2.5 td, but the project seems to difficult for me being a novice this is my first defender, think i'll wait till someone puts up an acrhive , but i would love to do it. :) cheeer's defender dinky

  7. Hey Dinky just out of curosity why are you swapping a 200tdi with a 300tdi...whats wrong with the 200?

Also i have heard that(correct me if i am wrong)...the 200tdi was one of the best engines by LR...well what do you think?

hi ali,the engine i am thinking of changing is a td not tdi  cheer's dinky

  8. check the vacuum pump is working, pull the hose of the servo & with engine running stick your finger on end of hose it should give a strong suck, if not might need a new vacuum pump. adjust the rear brakes too if they are drums.

hi, vacuum ok plenty of suction :) cheer's

  9. I'd go for the fluid too, I've experienced the same thing with one of my cars in the past.

Did the problem occur after a period of hard braking? If so it points to water in the fluid boiling up.

    Mark.

hi mark, just before MOT i put new brake pads in as i have disc's on the back, garage said they were binding a bit would this cause caliper to get hot and boil fluid, when at the garage a few minutes later the rear hubs were still abit warm i have stopped the binding now , but have'nt had chance to take it out yet  cheer's defender dinky

  10. check the vacuum pump is working, pull the hose of the servo & with engine running stick your finger on end of hose it should give a strong suck, if not might need a new vacuum pump. adjust the rear brakes too if they are drums.

hi, will try vacuum to morrow cheer's defender dinky

  11. hi all, took dinky for mot today passed flying colours, garage about 20 minutes away after about 15 minutes brakes went spungey, had to wait awhile for mot brakes went solid again, on the way back home same happened again about 15 minutes spungey waited for awhile and they were solid, any ideas seems a bit strange  cheer's defender dinky

  12. My TD5 had a similar problem which I believe is common on TD5's. There is a valve in the injector that is an integral part of part of the housing. It is a standard part from land rover and costs about £40 I seem to remember.

hi all, sorted problem, like daveturnbull suggested. i don't think it was seated properly undone and tightened up seems ok thanks wayne :)

  13. hi all, after a few weeks searching for oil leak, found this while engine was running leak on fuel line, from fuel filter first nut on injecter a very bad drip, tried spanner on nut but seems really tight , so is there a washer inside that could have perished or is it more serious like injector blocked further along and throwing pressure back up fuel line, could do with help asap cheer's wayne

  14. I don;t think you need to remove the sump again yet. Follow the trail of oil up the engine. Does it come from higher up above the sump was what i was asking really? It could be leaking well above the sump and then pooling in that area before dripping down the flywheel housing. What engine are we talking about? (my reply above was about a 200tdi). A lot of people are using liquid gaskets now i think and a combination of that and a proper gasket often ensures that the a replaced gasket is not at fault.

hi reb, sorry for late reply, engine is 200td, as stated in one reply oil is not coming out of drain plug hole only down the face of bellhousing, had my hand down back of engine and found dirty grease oily substance, i think it is coming from back of engine, cleaned bellhousing off again didn't use landy 4 or 5 hours still clean no soon as i used landy oil leak, now have to find leak. cheer's wayne :(

  15. Only gonna be the crank seal if its actually coming out of the drain hole i would have thought?

Is the top of the flywheel housing covered in oil? i.e. is your leak higher up? I posted on here last week about a similar issue and Les and Ralph replied to suggest that the small semicircular seal at the back of the rocker cover may be leaking and/or the rocker cover. I had oil dripping from the bottom of the flywheel housing that was escaping from much higher up. Now changed the seals and hopefully solved the issue.

hi, reb78, if i take sump off again, could i tell by looking at gasket if it's being leaking, if so what would i be looking for ? any suggestions welcome. cheer's wayne
