  1. and that if you are not wasting time en route.... if you leave England a few hours before the ferry goes you should be fine...

that has been done before...

Jim: are you going to the pub meet ?

I would love to do the MOBC but ive got the wrong truck for the job!, however if anyone needs a Co Driver then i would be up for it :)

  2. Apparently Portal Tech will guarantee delivery within 45 daysfor international clients.

    Bill.

:hysterical: I wish my Disc's conversion came that quick, If it wasn’t for dollythelw's help getting hold of the guys at Prortal Tek it would have taken even longer! It’s a shame that portal Tek don’t grasp the opportunity they have with the Gen III axles and employee a few more people to help them let the business grow and become far more successful.

  3. Hello to all and to all a Happy New Year

does any one have any idea what size rose joints would be best to fit to the rear trailing arms on a

    300 tdi disco

am very good at manufacturing and skint so am making my own to answer the question of why not

just buy the arms before it gets asked

dont bother using rose joints on trailing arms, i had a set of scrapiorn ones and the lasted 4 events before they were making horible knocking noises, ive now fot a set of gigglepin arms that use the johnny joints.

by some johnny joints and make your own trailing arms if you want to save some ££

    johnny joints

  4. plasma 12 every time will out last any other if looked after

Ive used dyneema bowrope, Marlow, Plasma 12 and there all carp at resisting abrasion, they cant withstand the same abuse as a wire rope :( but there is know way i would ever go back to wire :) !!

Dont by anything less that 11mm thick, its better to have thicker rope than trying to squeze those few extra feet on the drum ;)

  5. so i've picked up a 300tdi disco really cheap and have always wanted a 100" defender.

i figure i need to put a new rear cross member on it, outriggers, obviously the bodywork, tub and tank mounts, but what else? will i need to get a defender R380 box or keep the disco item?

if anyones built one, just an outline would be much appreciated.

    cheers. si

Save yourself the work and drive the disco! :D

i would never swap my disco for a defender, i like my comfort to much!

  6. Hi Cliff

You don't need any navigational equipment. You will be provided with an aerial photo at each event showing the location of all the CyberPoints.

Some teams do choose to use MemoryMap to track their location particularly at the larger sites.

Ive never used a GPS on any of the events, as long as your Bit0h can read a map properly im sure you will be fine. The only we would have found it useful is at walters at night.

  7. Chris we are entered, plus booked in to the Castle pub............... so get the form's in, if you want a shot ;)

Ill be there, ill have the week off work between the 1st round of the HW and Ultimate. Might have to fit a 1:1 transfer box to get my top speed up on the road so i can keep you in my mirrors

  8. you broke it!? :o:lol:

Saturday we had a split top hose for the radiator where one of the jubile clips for the intercooler hose had rubbed through, we took it to rockingham landrover and got the bits to fix it which took 3 hours competing time <_< still came 11th on saturday though

Sunday morning i caught the front diffguard on a rock when reversing down a bank, the diffguard was bolted on and had two small blobs of weld either side, one of the blobs pulled a hole in the diff casing when it broke off  Easy fix with a bit of duck tape stuffed in the hole

Then the clutch felt like it was slipping a bit,(1 year with adrian giving it loads a dog  ) so i thought it would be better to call it a day rather than burn a clutch out in a bog. After that we did a 30 mile round trip to collect a new alternator to keep lee's truck going ;)

  9. It was good fun this weekend, i was only able to compete thanks to Adrian for lending me his truck :o:D It was really strange doing it in someone else's truck, there's always that thought it the back of your mind (dont futting brake it!) (sorry about the hole in the diff Adrian :( , If only u bolted those portals on  )

Adrian u can borrow my truck any time! :)

  10. I have been about air shox recently.

Liking the idea of doing away with springs, shock absorbers, spring relocation etc and getting good travel up to 16".

This US retailer has them from Fox, King and Swayaway.

    www.polyperformance.com

It looks like a full set would start at $1,000. With the current exchange rate that is cheaper than a set of 4 premium springs and dampers. Especially since I am going the states a few a times next year and could add to luggage.

I read they are complex to set up using nitrogen and oil.

They seem almost too good to be true, which probably means they are.

Has anyone much experience of using them?

    Hi,

ive used them for the past year on my Range Rover, there's only a few people using them is this country, but in the states as you are probably well aware they are very popular.

Air shocks are not really suited to anything that involves a lot of speed, they are ok on the road as long as you get them setup properly ;)

But they are great on a challenge truck or trialer, because speed is not usually an important factor (unless your name's Jim Marsden :hysterical:)

The airshox works well at balancing the vehicle when full of articulation is required, unlike a conventional spring and shock setup that dislocates, leaving the axle dangling under its own weight with one wheel with very little pressure on the ground for traction, (but everyone thinks it looks good  ) the air shock provides far more pressure and helps get the traction to the ground where its most needed, it also makes the truck feel very stable at full articulation.

(X-eng have also found a solution to this with there x springs)

I got my airshox from Milner Offroad

The airshox will take a bit of trial and error to setup, you will need a bottle of Nitrogen, the regulator and fittings. millner can help out with that.

you will also need a valve key, syringe and some fork oil to setup your shocks.

The best link ive found for setting up airshox is this one, Airshox Pirate4x4

  11. Hi, just wondering who's doing it?

my truck will be ready not sure if ill have the brakes sorted out in time but the bodywork will be looking nice and fresh again!

Im a little bit worried about the driving in between sites, the 7.6 ratio axles make it a little slow and the posibility of not stopping is a little scary

I better get back in the garage and do some more work!

  12. Ive just been watching video's of the Rock Racing in the states, and loved it! Just say if ive gone nuts but what do you think to setting out faster specials, for next year? (wider gates too, dont want to slow down! :) )

We have had a few fast ish ones this year and i really liked them and im sure the spectators do too!

    watch this.

  13. Alan - I don't know of any in the UK. I'd be surprised if there are any. As much as they know their stuff, I don't think you'll have much luck with Ashcroft for custom building a Ford 9 into a spidertrax housing.

You might get a custom 4x4 builder to sort it for you, but its probably safer if you just order the things built from the states. They have all the parts / experience of the Ford 9s. If you don't know what spec to get regarding bearing sizes / spline counts, housing types, ratios, pinion oilers, treatments, trussing, blah blah, just email the axle builders referenced in pirate, and they will sort you out. Try talking to Sunray for a start. Avoid USA 6x6.

    Regards, Al.

Alan im not sure using a ford 9inch and spider axle casing is the way forward, when i was looking at the pictures the diff apears to be quite a bit larger than the volvo diff housing. This could potentualy cause problems unless huge bumpstops are used to stop the diff punching holes in the sump. Have you found any measurements for the axle casing?

I think it might be worth modifing the volvo axle casing to fit landrover or jeep parts that are avalable off the shelf in the uk, then get someone like ashcroft to make some custom shafts to marry the new diff to the volvo portal box splines.

would A Landrover 24 spline diff be strong enought with the portal hub reduction? what is the volvo portal hub reduction ratio?

  14. Im guessing its because next year there will be 2 trucks turning up with 4 wheel steer and im sure that some people would disagree. Putting the hydro steer trucks in with them helps make up the numbers.

Alan i do share your point of view about the hydro steer in class 2, but dont let it put you off, hopefully there will be more people realise that landrover steering boxes and low slung track rods have there weaknesses! ;)

  15. Used slime earlier this year and whilist we did not get any punctures the wheel viberations were really bad.

We were using 35/12.5/15 Bfg Mud terrians, these tyre do not usaully shake your car to bits, but they do with slime (Other brands are available  )

    Jim :)

Jim, you sure thats not the big lumps of mud stuck inside your rims

Ive used for the past 3 years 500ml in each tyre on my bfg muds 265/75r16 and ive never had any vibrations, or punctures :) how much you been putting in?

  16. The front locker needs to be a bit more positive, it would not go in at Slindon and I would rather have something that is 100% reliable. I can fix it and make it work but it will need constant adjustment after each event. The axle was bent 2 years ago and although it is now straight, the locker is tempremental.

Im sure ive seen on the pirate 4x4 forum something about fitting ARB's intro 303's!

Yesterday i did have quite a few problems with the lockers not disengaging when i wanted them too, i had to get out and push the rod back into the housing.

  17. We had a great day despite a few problems with the truck, the hydro steering playing up again, within an hour into the event <_< the ZF pump didn't like the thin JCB hydraulic oil, which resulted in metallic oil and next to no steering :( Big thanks to Gywn who gave us some really helpful advice and suggested using engine oil :o we dumped the oil and filled up with 10w40 and continued with some steering!

The Bolts did amazingly well, just shows that you don’t need Lockers, 3 winches and huge suspension travel to win ;)

  18. cool - whats the torque output of the motors Chris?

Ive just done a few calculations, asuming that warns HP output are rated around 5600 rpm like the bow motors.

The 4.6hp motor at 5600rpm is producing 52.8 inch/lb's of torque.

The 6hp XP warn at 5600 rpm is producing 70ft inch/lbs of torque.

Thats only based on Warns HP figure's thought!!

So if you multipy 70 inch/lb torque by the warns 8274 gear ratio of 134:1 that gives 9380 inch/lb torque at the drum with a drum speed of 41rpm!

Obviously ive missed something or have Warn been a little ambitious with there motor HP ratings?

Has anyone got a graph with torque, power and speed of a 12v warn winch motor?

  19. Don't want to get dragged into this........

However i must advise againist the use of billet (Solid bar)

As we have had now three drums sent to us by different people using billet that have bent, not a lot, but they have bent one was standard length the others extended.

As i am sure someone will point out that that it depends on material etc......

But it is just a useful bit of info :)

    Jim

If you use the right tube there will be no problems, just dont go and use some cheap mild steel! I cant see the point in using billet, its just extra weight in the wrong place ;)

ive got a gigglepin drum, ive not had any problems, the rope will snap way before the drum bends!

The 2.5" diameter drum makes a huge diffrence, with one layer on the drum the winch will stall at around 11000lbs (guestimate, using a bit of maths!)
