  1. Hi readers has anyone got any tips on how to remove a stubborn hinge bolt? Iv bought a stainless steel hinge bolt set and while trying to replace the old bolts one of them has me beaten. Its the second from top on the drivers side on the bulkhead, the j clip (nut) has broken and the whole thing just spins when I try to free it. The same thing happens when I try to drill it out and there is not enough room to get a saw between the hinge and bulkhead. What am I doing wrong?

  2. visited the garage in the evening.

my radiator was choked of rust sediments. the bypass pipe below was totally blocked and the thermostat was jammed (presumably by the rust sediments). Hence like what was mention, at times no water got to the sender and hence the gauge jumped to super hot and then back to totally cold.

other than that, it will get the entire radiator flushed tomorrow and new hoses. Engine didn't suffer anything as I noticed the irregularties with the temp gauage early. cooling system didn't over pressurise as the resivour didn't crack. it just might be my lucky day.

Glad to hear that. I hate that feeling, just when your about to find out if its just a little problem or its the end of the world

  3. sounds really scary. seems like my Td5 is giving me a lot of problems lately. damn, it's a well maintained engine. seems like the more you care about it, the more problems they give. hmmm.

let's await what the local garage tells me. still need some $$$ for the t-box too.

Let us know how you get on. Your pain can be our gain thats how it works Im afraid, and I could be next.

  4. Did you have to move the door's locking hardware out a bit to compensate for that spacer? What did you use for that? I can't tell from the photo. I have tons of aluminum sheet from an expensive 8 ft. diameter sat dish that Hurricanes Hannah and Ike destroyed for me...

I used something similar off an old lamp and flatened it out with a vice and some 4x2. When you take off the door catch there are all ready 2 or 3 spacers there use one of these for a template just cut the top part a little bigger to allow for a 5mm hole. Then simply replace one of the spacers with the new one and put a cable tie through the hole and around the belt and bobs your mothers brother (It may take a bit of fiddeling to get the door to close right afterwards on the passenger side of mine I had to leave all the spacers in including the new one) Job took an hour and a half but I was in no hurry

  5. Hot damn...NOW you tell me. I have a couple seat belts starting to look like they have been eaten by squirrels. And we don't have squirrels here.

Any other nifty little tricks like that you might pass on?

Ah come on Gringo you have twice as many defenders as I have :D The best tip is search the net there are a lot of people out there willing to give advice on defenders not all of it good but ask on here or similar forums and you can usually filiter out the rubbish. I fact it is shot down so fast by other posters it is hard to go wrong.

  6. . Having the door adjusted properly so it doesn't rattle over every bump is the next most important thing to not abusing it.

Yes good advice, but Iv tried that and failed to stop it ratteling on every bump maybe the hinges are allready past it. I have a 235-85-16 on it so thats basicly the standard size.

  7. Well, yes, the roads are rough, and the vehicle needs to be able to handle that. It's a Land Rover. Rough roads are their claim to fame, I think. I am actually not too happy to have to be modifying one to do what it is supposedly designed to do in the first place.

I suppose I need to take the plastic inside door liner off and see what we have in there. I don't like driving around here without a spare.

Im pretty sure this will only move the problem to the door hinges. The wheel mount on my 110 is solid but then it rattles hell out of the back door. If I dont get a swing away carrier soon Ill be replacing the door.

  8. thanks for the replies guys,

im going to obviously change the oil, but is it worth flushing the gearbox out with something, or would a straight swap be ok???

    cheers

    jase

Just drain it and let that stuff drain for a few hours because its thick. Hope your lucky and have not done any damage

  9. oap: tightening them to 10 wouldnt have caused a problem imo. Had you done it by hand though its very easy to put 25lbs into them and strip the threads!

I think its sometimes worth looking at the figures but i rarely actually use a torque wrench to do things up, unless its critical, like a cylinder head or main bearing caps.

you start to get a feel for how tight things should be by looking at the size of the fixing and what its holding on...

I done it by feel and I think its ok. I was afraid of striping the threads so I tested 10 lbs on my daughters bicycle and broke the bolt on the saddle. Better that than my landrover :D

  10. well thats exactly what i needed thanx peeps

I changed the injector harness on my td5 today and had to take the rocker cover off. To put it back on the bolts are sopposed to be tightened to 9 lbs torque but my torque wrench dont go under 10 lbs so I winged it. Hope its all good we will see

  11. 2002 defender td5 cuts out no power or electrics everything is dead.Leave power back and car starts and runs .When it cuts out engine management light comes on alarm sounds

Check under the drivers seat (in the box) that the earth is tight this is a commen problem on a td5

  12. As stated I am currently on the hunt for a new land rover. I currently have a 300tdi disco and am looking for something newer. I am considering a td5 90, What are they like to live with on a daily basis? I primarily need something to tow large boat trailers around the country, shunt heavy trailers around in fields and be able to take a reasonable amount of kit in the back

Are the heaters any better than the older ones (I had a 200tdi 90 which had a very poor heater). Would i be able to get a half decent one for around 8k?

    Cheers for looking

    Paul

You would get a good one for that money.I have a 1999 110 but the heater is a bit of a joke if you dont mind been cold, not so funny if you do. Apart from that its a great landrover. A 90 is not so good at towing the long wheel base of the 110 is much better and the load space is far better
