  1. Hello and welcome. I think I'd be worried about a flexible chain catching on something and keeping the throttle open after my foot had lifted. My 2a has a 2.5td fitted with series throttle. Who ever fitted it fashioned a steel rod (with a kink in it to get round an obstruction) and welded it to the relevant bits at each end. Looks a bit Heath Robinson but works fine. The inner workings of a gearbox are a foreign and mysterious land to me so shall leave that one to someone else.
  2. Wise words. Went to swap the battery for a known good one and discovered the +ve terminal was loose. One nut tightened and all fixed - Doh! Makes a nice change not to have to get the wallet out. Thanks for advice. Adrian
  3. My first thought was the alternator regulator. I have a spare alternator in the garage, swapped the regulator over and it made no difference. Have checked earths so will have a play with the battery today.
  4. Hi all. I'm looking for some advice and ideas about some faulty electrics on my 2a with 2.5td fitted. The alternator light flickers at idle and carries on flickering when the engine is revved - fan belt tension is ok. The engine cranking speed seems quite laboured. Battery voltage across terminals tends to be 12.3v rising to 13.6v when engine is running. In addition the vehicle has a second fusebox fitted running a rear work lamp and some interior lighting. The live to the fusebox comes direct from the battery terminal and the lights are earthed to the body. These lights now only work when the engine is running and seem to flicker with the same frequency as the ignition. Anything running off the original fusebox is unaffected. I recently had a problem with a loose washer arcing across an uninsulated live connector and blowing fuses on the main fusebox. Now discovered this has been resolved. Battery, alternator and starter are all less than 3 years old but I'm wondering if the recent power surges have fried something. I'd appreciate some pointers towards the likely culprit to save me replacing good parts. Thanks in advance. Adrian
  5. I too have had a bad experience with Paddocks. I purchased a S3 recon gearbox from them a few years ago. Once fitted I took the vehicle for a spin only to find out on my return that all the oil had poured out of the defective seal in the front cover plate. They sent me a new cover plate and gasket but would not compensate me for the new clutch friction plate covered in ep90 or the time and inconvenience of removing the gearbox again. Haven't used them since.
  6. I think that is probably the reason for routing the pipe under the chassis rail. Mine run over the chassis rail and the gap between the chassis and the wing is pretty tight so I slipped a short piece of fuel pipe over the copper pipe to offer some protection.
  7. You say that you have a good firm pedal on 2nd pump. If there was still air in the system the pedal would be spongy on 2nd pump but if it's all been pressure bled by a garage they should've got all the air out. Assuming the system is free of air either the master cylinder is not moving enough fluid into the cylinders or the shoes are sitting too far away from the drums to make contact with them on the first push. So questions I would ask are as follows. Is it the correct master cylinder? Are the shoes correctly adjusted? Are the drums badly worn? One other thing I did wonder about was the new brake lines. Does copper pipe come in a variety of diameters and have you used the correct one? If the pipes are too big the master cylinder wouldn't be able to move enough fluid. Perhaps someone else will know the answer to that one. Good luck in getting to the bottom of the problem. Adrian
  8. I have learned from experience that buying the cheapest reconditioned box you can find doesn't always work out for the best. Different firms have different interpretations of the word "reconditioned". My advice would be to speak to legs - clicky clicky. They will strip your box and replace the worn/defective parts. Did a good job on my overdrive a few years ago anyway. Adrian
  9. I took the old girl for a drive round a pay and play site today. Half way round I noticed the washers, wipers, indicators and gauges had packed up. I looked under the bonnet and noted the fuse had blown so changed it for a spare. The spare also blew in a short while so there is obviously a short somewhere. Any suggestions on the best way to track down the faulty circuit would be grately appreciated. Thanks in advance. Adrian
  10. As an aside, I don't know what brake setup you had before the rebuild but I've just done an 11" drum conversion + single line servo and the improvement is dramatic. Adrian
  11. My first landy was (mostly) a S111 2.25 diesel and the oil filler was in the rocker cover. Adrian
  12. As the wheel cylinders would be at an angle I'd think you'd get a little pocket of air at the top that wouldn't bleed out. Adrian
  13. I used one of these kits myself many years ago. IIRC they come with gaskets and all other sundries required. The sachet of grease with mine was relatively small (certainly not big enough to fill the swivel housing) and I assumed it was to be used to pack the wheel bearing on reassembly. Adrian
  14. I second that. The bulkhead and chassis on my 2a have lasted 49 years so far (although the bulkhead is due some attention). If either need replacing I wont worry about zinc plating as in another 49 years i'll be 84.
  15. The engine shouldn't overheat but you'd be down on power. A free flowing exhaust allows the turbo to spool up quicker and hold boost further up the rev range.
  16. I investigated the Zeus conversion a few years ago. IIRC the pads are standard LR90/110 but the discs are customs by Zeus. If for what ever reason the company ceases trading your £750 conversion then becomes scrap. Was enough to put me off anyway. Adrian
  17. The £17 included entry to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and associated attractions if you fancy a look. The best bit of the day was looking at all the other classic cars for sale in the paddock and thinking "if only" (or in a couple of cases "what if"). Will stick the Newbury dates in the diary - especially as it's only 4 junctions down the M4.
  18. Hi all - a newbie here. I didn't want to turn my first post on this forum into a rant but after attending this event yesterday at Beaulieu I feel I must share my views. Having lived in the Bath area for a number of years I used to go to this event when it was held in Old Sodbury and found it to be an invaluable source of parts and an enjoyable day out. When the event moved to Newbury the scale of the event was great, I never failed to find what I was looking for and at a price that was usually cheaper than eBay. Yesterday it cost the wife and I £17 to get in. The Sortout was in a separate field to the rest of the autojumble. There were hardly any trade stands and the whole event was a small fraction of the size of Newbury, it actually struggled to half fill the field set aside for the event. I wasn't there for opening but only managed to find 2 things on a shopping list of 7 items. Just before leaving the field at 1:30 I overheard a conversation between 2 stallholders saying they would be lucky to break even on the day. That being the case I can't imagine they and other stallholders will bother to return making the event even less attractive to buyers. Needless to say I shall not repeat my mistake next year.
