I know it's another tyre question but I've been searching on here for an answer that would be understood by a numb nut like me but.... On defender 90 now I have standard issue 5.5inch wide steels with 205/80 r16's. I would like to change to 235/85 r16s (on new wider rims) I understand this will affect the gear ratio etc but what I want to know is will it affect it so drastically that I would need to do something about it? And if so what? If it's a big deal I would prob just stick to what I have! I just prefer tyres a bit more substantial.

Just wanted to add that I'm also getting stung by this. I have a VW Golf that my wife drives and have just had the automatic renewal - up by £110 per year! I have never claimed etc etc. My Defender insurance is due for renewal in six weeks so I'm going to visit the local NFU office on Monday to try and pre-empt a huge hike! Been with NFU for years.....

Hello everybody, I have a 54 Defender and wanted to run this one past you as I'm quite inexperienced. I was towing my father in laws old Mazda pickup up the yard ( slight incline) and three times as I took up the slack my Landy stalled no matter what revs I gave it. Revs died and engine stalled. As soon as it needed to make an effort it just died! I resorted to switching to low range which did the job but not too convincingly. Wasn't a huge weight to tow. I should be able to tow 2 ton of cattle trailer with this thing!! Could this be a problem with the clutch - haven't noticed any obvious slipping but does occasionally it gives a little "bump bump bump/ judder" when pulling away in first. Feels like it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding...... Thanks a lot for your help - I'm learning slowly but surely!

Sorted - it was indeed the wastegate. I did as you said and it freed up. thanks very much for your help!

Hi, Sorry to be complete div but do you apply the lubricant to the linkage at turbo end or to the rod going into the actuator housing? Should I be able to pull the rod back and forwards from the housing - at the moment it doesn't budge at all. Thanks for your help

Hi everybody, I have a 2005 TD5 Defender. Been having a problem on and off for a while....My Land Rover occasionaly has no power when pulling away in first (sometimes my right foot is flat on the floor), and stalls. This happens usually, but not always, when pulling away up an incline. Has just had full service and still have the issue - any suggestions?? Thanks!

Hello everybody.... Can you believe I pulled away in 1st gear and drove about 50 yards with the handbrake on!!! Can anybody put my mind to rest about damage that might have been done. I have driven the car since and can't notice any problems but wanted to check! Thanks very much for your input.

Hi - this is my first post! My 1999 Defender TD5 has started to creak when turning the steering wheel. It happens when moving steering wheel when stationary or sharp turning at low speeds and sounds like metal on metal. Pretty much an amateur so any input will be gratefully received. Thanks!
