  1. under their mug shot is "send me a message" is that what your looking for?
  2. We're thinking in the year(s) area certainly but this seems to be getting harder and harder due to VED and MOTs and other silly English things. Why can't i just set off and go, damit!
  3. Good point! I didn't think of that. So coming back is the only choice it seems.
  4. When reading the below please consider I've never owned a LR before and know absolutely nothing! I will be buying a hayes manual though for whichever i get. If i was off round the world in a 110 or 130 some say buy a 300 series because of the ECU. What other models would i choose or should i just get a spare ECU? Should i just buy whatever looks like a deal and pray that the locals can fix it when I break it. Loyalty to models aside whats the more sensible thing to do. I know there are some pretty good 130 (300) on sale and actually some new ones floating around. I'm not rich but have a decent budget and could possibly afford a new one but the carnet would kill me.
  5. Now thats a good idea. I could do with one of those. Although a have a meter or velcro... hmmm.
  6. For some reason my last post didn't take... Thanks to all for the superb info. It’s truly worth a lot to me so it’s my shout for the teas if I see you at the Peterborough show. I will come to find you if you have offered. You can tell me all about your travels (who can pass up that short of chance) if you do not mind me asking stupid questions. I have just been to look at the downsized house but I am not sure I will get away with it. The missus will not move into that. There is another posh(er) one, which would release about £30K. I wonder if she has realised how serious I am! Now if they would only put the VAT down to 0% I might be able to afford this ride, the trip, food, fuel and to survive when we return. If we ever do return. Am I running away with this a bit too much? If the Azalai is a camper then the caravan club could insure me for an extended Euro tour in all member states. Looking like its £700 approx. Thinking of the VED surely I can get this online and have it posted out to me (recorded) when it arrives? I could do the same with the insurance. I need a live in secretary to stay in the UK…that’s it, the wife’s staying at home and I’m going alone.
  7. You guys are just too helpful. Thanks to you all. I think you can all expect a visit on Saturday. Please tell me all about your travels then(who can turn down an offer like that) but expect some questions at the end. Julie (the wife) thinks i'm obsessed. She's right. Within the next year somethings gotta give. I've decided that my saving for retirement isn't giving me what i want. This might. You advice is worth a lot to me so if you see me Saturday, i'm buying ! For a yorkshireman thats a tall order. When i mean buying i mean cups of tea etc...can't afford to buy you new parts for your rides....

  9. So much info already. Really thanks a bunch. I'll look into the insurance side and thanks for the pointers with company names. I also saw that the carnet would be much cheaper if the vehicle was registered in Europe so i suppose i've got to look at that if the "modifications" aren't modifications. I didn't know the vehicle had to be back in the UK every 12 months. If you can shed some light on that i'd be obliged. As for the real reason for the choice of camper. Its the inclusion of a shower mainly and the fact we can sleep in it without looking like we're actually in it. Thats the reason for no roof tent, i think. I can hardly put up a roof tent in the centre of some city. The camper could remain almost anonymous, even in a city centre car park. Am i a lunatic? Don't answer that! We don't intend on doing any hotels at all you see. This will be purely "in van" where the odd hotel (very budget) will be used when only when absolutely required. I'm not loaded so this is a tough one as i will completely deplete all my funds pretty quickly if we go overboard. I'm now thinking of washing clothes....damn this is complicated. My financials are such that my house in the UK is safe (don't you just love south yorkshire house prices) and i have enough funds to maybe do 5 years (possibly) and that leaves me 10 years shy of 55 and pension which may pay out something if the market gets any better. So this is a gap year x 5 and a job in Tescos or B&Q when i get back. Just realised my council tax is 50% if the house is empty so thats another £500 down the pan every year if we can't let it out. You can answer the lunatic question now... p.s. I've arranged to meet Anton on Saturday from OEC. Didn't member Simonwh have one? Simonwh post
  10. I've been reading the posts on here and there seems to be an old post about LR campers. I'm thinking of an extended trip and i'm looking at on of the Azalai LR conversions prossibly based on a 110 300 if i can get one in good nick. Azalai Web Site They do look expensive though especially since the Euro rate is garbage. Does anyone know what they're like or know anyone whos used one. I'm off to see a 130 double cab at the peterborough show on saturday and would love some impartial advice. Cheers! BTW. Its likely our little trip will start with a month in the UK before returning home. Plan a few months in Europe and possible return home. Then a few year trip to who knows where. All this rests on cash of course. I've seen all the round the world blogs and none of them give an idea of how much cash they have to start with (or have spent). One or two give an indication but nothing that makes me feel i have, or haven't, got enough money. I recon the vehicle is going to cost me £35K, carnet cost to RAC £500 (estimate), carnet bond £2000 (??) not sure about insurance for the vehicle. Any ideas welcomed on that. Allow £10,000 for shipping costs if needed and £1000 per month for everything else. Problably need a sat phone so thats another £1000 with an 18 month minutes package. Sat Nav £500. Can i get buy on £1000 a month living, Fuel etc. I think that realistic surely? Anyhow...Thanks Neill
