  1. CV's could cause it, tjolliffe broke one at round 2 of the LRS challenge and that stopped his steering, the cv has to have completely expoloded, but he couldn't turn much (maybe 1/2 rotation of the steering wheel) and his wheel kept locking up too so it was quite obvious. Made recovery across the site quite interesting! Saying that, as niamh says, cv's are unlikely to go in this way, unless its been given lots of beans off-road
  2. Thanks for the reply. I've tried a few local machine shops and some engine re-builders, the machine shops don't do that kind of work and the engine re-conditioning people don't have that equipment and weren't very keen, only do re-boring, head skimming etc and said that it'd be around £150-£200 if I found anywhere! I was only going to replace them as I had it all stripped and was there, there is a small score on the 1st bearing but they don't look too bad so I think I'll just leave them.
  3. Hi, I'm currently re-building my 300tdi and want to change the camshaft bearings. Haynes just says take it to a specialist and RAVE is no help either. Is it just a case of drifting out the old ones (with quite a long bearing drift), and then drifting in the new ones or is it a bit more complicated than that? Thanks in advance, Chris
  4. Yeah we have some bridging made, tjolliffe made us a set but apparently they weigh lots! We have the mother of all tree straps and a nice x-anchor courtesy of simonr Really looking forward to it though, hopefully its a good weekend!
  5. yep, I just had my light bar nicked off my disco last night, they unbolted it and cut all the wires. Had 6 ring spots and a CB ariel on it. They know that they will never be found or traced, and even if they are found with it, there isn't much of a way of proving its not theirs. At least they didn't nab the winch....yet
  6. If you get a safari snorkel you have to cut a hole in the side of the 300tdi air box, and that's where it enters. You then blank off the hole at the front where the original pipework sits, leaving plenty of room for a second battery.
  7. Your not the only one on 235/85's. I'm glad somebody else apart from me and Mocha are. It's gonna be our first challenge (hopefully not the last) but we are a bit worried about being very outclassed Oh well, soldier on
  8. Well, if they are standard height springs (assume they are) if you jack the truck up, put an axel stand under the chassis and take the wheel off, you may be lucky and be able to take the spring out without compressing. Perhaps take the anti-roll bars off while you do this to get extra axle droop. Alternitivly nip to halfords, spring compressors are only £10-£15. A few people have managed using ratchet straps, so could give that a go. If your just going to hit them stand well back, lol, not sure it'll work, but if it does rather you than me :-P And if its hard to hammer them out, it'll be even harder to hammer them in!
  9. How deep are you planning to go without a snorkel? The breathers usually sit at the back of the engine and should be fine in "normal" water, not that putting them in the air box would cause any problems
  10. You should have another class 1 truck, Tom has convinced me and Mochabear to give it a bash
  11. (its pete on my friends account) i did use metal, etcher primer. and a good paint... still poo. lol. also, not spending much on it, and my next toy is an x-eng hand brake or ARB rear diff locker... this is ALOT cheaper. lol
  12. I only have 1 extra gauge so just got a normal dash pod. Switches are mounted elsewhere. 1 bar will be fine, they boost to 0.8-0.9bar. If you're going to tweak it perhaps go for 1.5 bar. Tim are supposed to be good, they are really popular and I haven't heard anything bad about them
  13. When i fitted the one to mine I fitted it to the pipe that goes from the turbo to the fuel pump, its a similar size to the one needed to go to the gauge so a simple T-peice does the job nicely. Its also the correct side of the car to go into the cab. Its on a 300tdi but i'm sure the 200's will have a very similar set up. Just another idea that may be easier than plumbing into the wastegate.
  14. when you take it all apart just watch out for the springy wire things, they make it a bit of a fiddle to put back together, a friend is most useful at this point!
  15. I got my winch bumper from winch solutions at the last driffield show, it was £200 i think, looks good, fits well and wraps round the sides, got 2 swivel recovery eyes as well. Made with thick old metal too. Got it with a warn xd9000 winch, which i was given (just needed a remote) and that's really good for pay and play days, nothing too serious. I think you can pick them up for around 300. I know somebody with a britpart winch (12000lb) got plenty of pull but its painfully slow!
