  1. Out of interest would a head gasket leak cause a misfire/popping(I think it could!)?? It runs really well except for the popping!!!
  2. Hello, Does anyone have any advice what to look for when a megasquirt is popping or backfiring, it seems to do this on idle, randomly and rarely. But with some load and the rpm fixed it will pop from the exhaust every now and again. The rest of the time the engine sounds great, wideband is running around 14.7. I am wondering if it could be a plug problem? Any thoughts?
  3. I have read through the new Iva manual. Anyone know if a 3.5l v8 with mega squirt would pass??
  4. I just wondered is there any way of finding out the progress of this change?? As in if it will be approved or not? I have been putting off getting my vehicle iva’d For years now - not been a priority and now I am thinking I need to rush to get it tested? Would like to find out if it’s likely??
  5. Thanks, I suppose I should have been specific, the lowest speed before the engine stalls or the clutch has to be dipped to stop it stalling
  6. Hello, I don't own a freelancer at the moment but I wondered what the lowest speed is in 1st gear? I suppose I am interested in how low range is the freelander when compared to a defender could you let me know what the lowest speed is with standard size tyres, thanks
  7. Thank you for the long replies with this, it might be a factor that I am in the east of the country that there aren't many events. When I was growing up I was always impressed with the varied engineering that was put into trucks and that generally meant that thousands weren't spent. Like others on here I am struggling to decide on which direction to build my next vehicle !
  8. When I was younger I first attended various trialling and comp safari events when there were all types of vehicles attending, I remember Suzukis and twin steer triallers all competing. Events seemed to occur regularly and always well attended. When i attend events now they all seem to be for high end competitive vehicles mostly brought rather than home built, and pay and play days seem to be beaten up discoverys etc. I always intended to build my own vehicle but the more stuff I attend and see on the net, I struggle to think that whatever I build won't be competitive, which makes me wonder what will off-roading be like in 5 years? Will it just be 8 or so high end events a year with awdc or similar and small scale clubs being poorly attended and therefore land being overused and consequently not very challenging? Sorry for the open subject but trying to work a plan for the future!
  9. Yes, sorry I had picked it up, I kinda thought I could buy a p38 as a base and use as much of it as possible !
  10. Thanks for all the replies I am considering using the m51 engine from a p38 with either a manual gearbox or an automatic but with a compushift controller fitted. Is there a way of wiring up the m51 Ecu as a standalone unit without the becm?
  11. What's the new bowler? I suppose it will be attending some trials events not likely yo be any comping I suppose I was thinking about an engine which had a standalone ecu, which footed the bill of being efficient and powerful !
  12. I know that this question has been asked a few times but I was hoping for a few more options I am looking for an engine gearbox combo for my next project which will be a coil sprung build, which will be 50% road and 50% off-road vehicle. As it will be fairly light I was thinking about a bmw m51 (as in p38) with its auto gearbox. However the gearbox needs a separate Ecu such as a compashift which I am not too keen on the expense. So are there any 2-2.5 l petrol or Diesel engines with gearbox that are modern fuel efficient engines that don't require bespoke Ecus? I was even thinking about the engine in the d40 Nissan Navada? By the way I was planing on using a remote lt230 for 4x4 if necessary so a standard car engine would work too! Thanks,
  13. Thanks for all the posts, I only really intend to have something as a bit of a Greenlane, tow, odd 20 mile trip to work kind of thing. I am not expecting lots of speed, just something that I can enjoy. The 2.25 is tired now, and thought that there must be something similar which is lighter, bit more power and more efficient. Oh and is a easy-ish to fit( no searching for adapters) I have a megasquirt in my v8 which I am really happy with and did once think of doing it to the 2286. But that seems like putting a sticking plaster over a broken leg! Would the feeelander v6 or 2.0 fit easily, is there a gearbox to suit?
  14. Some might have a moan at me for doing this, but I am in a way trying to keep my landys running! I have a 1957 series 1, currently fitted with a tired 2.25 petrol. As it's not the most upto date engine I have been thinking of an alternative. I was thinking of putting a rover t16 engine in, however this seems a lot of work for an old engine. Is there anything more modern which would be an easier fit? Like a 2 l BMW engine and gearbox?
  15. If a new injection manifold was made and a mega squirt assembly fitted to a series 2286 engine, would it make the engine more efficient, improve mpg and be more reliable? Is it worth the effort? I would have thought it would improve but anyone have an idea as to how much? Cheers
  16. Thanks, I was once advised when I was using a Hotwire system to run the breathers through air filters into atmosphere. Having read another post on here about breathing, I have replumb them back into the plenum. Found some maps though which is sorted.
  17. Would someone mine posting a good fuel and spark map for a 3.5 with Hotwire injectors etc. I would like to try a working one to see if it makes any difference to my vehicle, which hasn't been set up or ran on the road yet. Also I have the rocker cover breathers going direct to atmosphere through air filters. Should I replumb them back into the plenum? I have just read the other post about installing a innovate web which has a backfire issue and can air be pulled in through the breathers?
  18. Great write up thanks, been thinking of doing this to mine at some point
  19. Yes, apparently every summer
  20. I am hoping someone can help me, I am aware of the iva process (infact taking a vehicle through it now) and aware of the 8 points process. I am thinking of buying a hybrid which is a 100 rr chassis with defender body. I believe it was built a number of years ago. The question I have is when I take it for an MOT will I be told it needs an iva or is there a cut off point for vehicles already on the road? I seem to remember there was but can't find any firm details. Thanks,
  21. Thanks for the replies, just pleased I am not the only one who has observed it!
  22. I have just received the copy of a land rover magazine which contains two articles which have two vehicles which have had chassis mods and are on the road but have no mention of an iva test. I enjoy reading the articles, but I don't understand how the authors just pass over the fact that they require a IVA test. unless I have the requirements wrong! Has anyone else noticed this? I get the magazine as a gift before any one asks!
  23. Thanks for the replies. I already have a wildcat which I am planning on iva'ing so don't fancy doing another I thought it would be nice to be able to rebody without making any chassis mods to make it easier. I fancy building something that didn't require lots of paperwork!
  24. What with the rules on chassis swaps etc. Is it possible to mount a 100 inch defender/series body work onto a unmolested discovery chassis by utilising the existing chassis brackets and using bolted bracketery only.
  25. I just wanted to post the conclusion to this as its annoying when searching topics only to not find out the outcome. I doubt that the conclusion will help any body though as you would have to be stupid to do this!! Anyway, the problem is from when I connected the headlights up 8 years ago. They only operated on 2 switches for main and dip. I am now using H4 bulbs and a discovery stalk so that I can get through an IVA. The headlights have never been used! The problem was I had wired up the connector to the bulb incorrectly!!! 4 discovery stalks later and the eureka moment happened this morning at 10:15. Very happy now! Sorry for the waste of your time and should have checked the basics first! but 8 years ago is a long time to forget!!
