  1. does it happen to you that after welding with co2 or mig welder for a couple of hours you get the feeling of having been out for a sun tan for a couple of days.. even my eyes... i use the welding mask but at the end of the day they look as if i had been on tequila all day long ... i suppose you use some special mask right ? not the arc welding one. sometimes at night i even realise what many prophets meant in their writings when they said that they were in the dark and saw the light....cause you get to see all kind of flashes even with closed eyes...and usually it occurs when you go to sleep.. but why... any doctor around... i guess no right.. those drive X5's or Tuaregs
  2. really nice pics of the scenery !! only one Landy??? do you have problems with authorities to carry out wading in that sort of heaven ?? or free for all !!
  3. same here... don't fit them... i have the outside of the tyre covered in oil , and i tried all types of seals and sealers to minimize the leak without success. besides, sometimes i forget to switch them on and i engage the 4wd and u hear a rattle from the inside. i did not see much difference in fuel consumption too. besides , that it is not the first time i see rock debris attached to them after some minor offroad in the rocks...
  4. Ah there is an other thread about this challenge then !! sorry did not know !! trying to download the video ! thanks
  5. A group of people from Malta yesterday left the island to go and compete in this challenge being held in Croatia. Any one of you out there ever took part? it is described as a very challenging event. http://www.croatia-trophy.org/
  6. hiw is the procedure to heat the end of a new plastic diesel pipe to replace the metal ends?? is am try with a lighter, but the ends turn to soft and collapse???
  7. I have this landy for this last two months... and it has a lot of vibrations at the back. so i inspected and found wheel cylinder half jamed and was keeping one shoe always touching with the drum, so wheel was not exactly free wheeling. i fixed the wheel cylinder, removed rear prop shaft for inspection and looks fine, but vibration still there. now to add insult to injury, from yesterday onwards, if you try to reverse or move foward on first gear, the landy starts to judder sort of and gives the impression that it wants to shear of the rear axle. If you drive on 2nd gear the judder is felt less. I run on 7.50's which i am going to replace soon cause very slippery. i have free wheelers hubs so the front is disengaged. If i remove the rear prop shaft and drive on the front one, will i be doing damage to the transmittion? Just to try to eliminate the rear prop shaft out, maybe it is bent, but the sliding splines are fine. Any idea about the judder?? could it be the clutch? ,but how come the judder is felt at the back?? thanks
  8. re my question about the engine... well it was more of a valve clearance problem actually. i adjusted to correct clearance and pulling power is back to normal. still got to settle out a bit the smoke thing when up a hill , but quiet happy with the ending result, considering the engine got the tecno of 40yrs ago. but i am happy cause with a good set up of wheels, and an overdrive, yes it drives up to 60km. Malta is very small, and in every corner you have to halt for a traffic lights or a pedestrian crossing, so it's useless fitting a V8 since you waste more fuel waiting than driving around. thanks for those who helped....
  9. so.. i have this SIII lwb 2.3d for these last couple of weeks. Landy in very good condition. the only thing is... up to 40km it's ok no smoke at the rear very clear exhaust. as soon as you try to push it over 40km, black smoke comes out .Up an inclined road, the landy looses all the power and you have to go down a gear.. the feeling is like this... 3rd not strong enough, 2nd too strong but low.. i fitted locking hubs to eliminate the front ... still same story. besides that, the engine temp gauge while driving does not exceed the first quarter. thermostat checked and looks ok. you can even open the radiator cap or touch it with your hand after a long run. it remains warm but not boiling ot hot.. the thing hassling me, is the engine looks very clean, no back compression from the top cover.. but it vibrates a lot, and seems to be a bit advanced.. engine mountings look fine.. so vibration from where?? the thing is you can see stickers all over the diesel pump , that it had been serviced reacently by a diesel specialist. consumption is ok...but the landy is a snail. any idea?? i was going to remove the head for decarbonization and check if there is something wrong with the valves..but maybe someone out there has a better tip.
  10. After following the thread , i decided to replace my brother 300's EGR valve and fit one of those thermo guages. ordered it from Thermo man too. took some 6 days to travel from Down under to the island of Malta. The digital guage looks great during night driving !!!! thanks for the very detailed topic. I also have some pics to add to the ones you have about the dashboard fitting and wire routing , but here ISP connection is slow so it will take me some time to put them up. thanks again
  11. thanks for the tips !!! will think a bit about it. Unfortunatly i had some 3 swb chassis stored in the garage .... but gave them away some months ago to get garage space.. will have to shorten the 109" Still ... did not get the blue color thing !!! what was that ??
  12. Hi Brasco from Malta here. I have a 109' and would like to turn it in to a 100' and also remove the rear hang out piece. Any idea from where is the better place to cut the chassis so i can reweld and renforce. Gonna do it just for the fun of saying i did it, cause otherwise it's not worth the hassle.. any suggestions.
  13. Same thing in Malta.... on tdi no need for glowplugs...even in the cold. Not the same ...when i had the old series with the perkins. needed two guys to start it up in the morning. One cranking and the other holding a burning piece of newspaper next to the inlet manifold. poor little beast
  14. very true, on my disco 200 found it like that, and was afraid to undo it from above.. no worries then , it something common .. thought i was the only one. did not understand which part is the above. can you elaborate more please?? thanks.
  15. hi again ! Well the virus is well spread here. Many people who spend their earnings to build good , capable offroaders. When you consider the size of the island,we have a couple of very good sites here in Malta and sister island Gozo, but the problem is that offroad is almost illegal all over the place, so it is practiced a lot by night. Now since the offroaders are well equiped , the crew have started a trend to travel to Sicily and join off road groups there for events. If you want to see a couple of the Maltese offroaders... i mean the die harder ones , go google and type " 12 ore trapani in the mud " and you will see the latest group that crossed over for the event. Really nice pics. If i find some pics , i will post some. We have also an Awdc forum. google Awdc malta and there are very good photo albums too.
  16. Hi , from the island of Malta here. I did that some time ago for my Brothers disco... Actually it is a simple task. i got the kit from rovertyme. you fit the alum spacers, replace the belt tensioners, longer bolts of course, modify the rad brakets. lenghten the gearleaver and hi-lo, lenghten the steering flexi arm' "in the kit u get a bush but still have to weld it up." and modify a bit the flex hose from the body to the fuel tank. the more time consuming is modifying the rear and front bumpers. the rear not that much but the front needs work. i will try to post pics. the clearance obtained between body and chassis is stunning, but still i drove it a bit offroad and i think , we have to change rims and fit macks so they get a bit more further out to get better stability. and one other thing . springs and shocks must not be standard ones. we fitted +2. regards.
