  1. I started by drilling out the spot welds that I could see.First the passenger side. Then the drivers side. I then decided to remove the middle section betweeen the door pillars to free the sections under each pillar. Passenger side. Drivers side. I had noticed when stripping the rear crossmember that both the drain holes on both sides had been sealed up from new with body sealer. Here is a photo, the screwdriver is pointing at the drain. When removing the middle section I could see the extent of the rot above both rear mounts. No wonder they had collapsed. Passenger side. Drivers side.
  2. Found the time today to start on the rear crossmember.I first removed the plastic trim on the bottom door which then enabled me to remove the door seal.I got underneath to take the bumper off and surprise surprise the heads on both bolts that hold the bumper on were both corroded and I couldnt get a socket to fit.I looked at removing the light fittings but these were also a bit worse for wear and so I didnt want to disturb them.I decided to cut two squares out of the bumper and then drill the captive nut off on both of them, which worked fine.I will weld them back in later. I had noticed when I removed the interior that the rear floor panel looked like it was curved rather than flat.Sure enough when I removed the bumper all was revealed. The rear mounts had both collapsed and the rear crossmember was sitting on the chassis and on top of the fuel tank (wonder how many others are like this). So I took a measurement out of curiosity. Here is the new part which I also took a measurement from for comparison. There was 20mm difference between the old and the new. Sorry I seem to have deleted a few photos from when I put the new cills in.
  3. Could somebody explain to me the best way/procedure to remove the rear bumper.Im going to be renewing the rear crossmember tomorrow but I havent got a clue how to remove the bumper. Thanks for any replys.
  4. I have started to strip the rear floor out from my Discovery and it looks like I am going to have to replace the rear cross member aswell.I have read a few times on here that it is better to make it from heavier box section than to fit a pattern part.I am just wondering what size box section people would recommend to use and also any tips/best way to go about it ? Thanks for any replys.
  5. Now that is some very tidy work so far, dont be surprised if you end up working on a few more old rusty Discos.Watching this thread with interest.

  8. I have a 95 3dr which has a problem with all 3 door handles. The 2 front doors, to open them I have to pull them numerous times before they eventually open. The rear door will only open with the key now as I think the central locking is not pushing the lever up on the inside of the mechanism far enough.Any ideas how to remedy these problems and also any parts i may require ? Thanks for any replys.
  9. Thanks for your replys.Did the kl71s make much difference to the mpg on your vehicles ? A few people have also recommended the Cooper st tyre for my needs. Thanks again for your replys.
  10. I am shortly going to be replacing the tyres on my 300 tdi,so would like some advice please.I mainly use the vehicle for going out shooting at night.Mainly I drive over a lot of fields and could do with some mud terrains.I have narrowed my search down to either Hankook rto3 at £67.70 or Kumho kl71 at £71.80.Just wondering which ones you would recommend or should I pay the extra and get either BFG or STT ? Thanks for your replys.

  13. Im after a bit info regrding doors that wont open When I got my Disco the drivers door handle worked fine but now it is getting tempremental. The passenger side door has never opened with the handle,it has to be opened from the inside and now the drivers door has started to play up.Ive done a search on here and it seems that its down to worn/broken springs.Does anybody have a part number for these items ? Also how hard of a job is it to do,and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for any replys.

  15. MY Disco used to shake violently when I hit a pot hole or speedbump etc.I bought a new steering damper for it and when I went to fit it ,the part the damper fits to was loose.I tightened this up and fitted the new damper and its been spot on ever since.

  18. Paddocks have BFG mud terrain 225 x 75 x 16 for 79 95 +vat.Slightly taller than the 2 standard sizes and only alter the speed by 2%.Dont need to modify the bodywork either.
  19. Wheels and tyres are all ok.The pot hole wasnt big at all ,it just seemed to send the front end shaking all over the place.Whilst I was braking immediately after it happend the steering wheel was shaking and you could feel juddering through the brake pedal.Tbh it felt as though something was loose/worn on the front end. Thanks again.
  20. Whilst travelling along the A66 last night I hit a pothole and the front end started shaking all over,I was travelling at 60 mph.I slowed down and then after a while it just returned to normal. It was bad enough to nearly induce a calvin staining moment.I have done a search but it seems there is so many possible causes I thought it would be better to explain what happened to narrow it down a bit. Thanks for any replys.
  21. How do you rate/find it Andy ? thanks for your reply
