  1. Thanks every one for the ideas. I couldn't get into the pump/sender unit because the screws were too shot, (clearly a future job), so I undid the filler hose where it meets the tank and fed in a 3/8" boat fuel line complete with primer bulb. It took a while but I got out some where between 75 and 80lt. I also dropped and drained the filter, its back on to keep the dust out but I'll replace it asap. I'm hoping that petrol left in the system will be sufficiently diluted when I refill it. Typically I can't put my hand on the manual when I need it so as far as priming is concerned I see that there's a bleed screw on the fuel filter housing do I crank the engine over with it cracked open until there's no air to be seen in the fuel and then tighten it up? Thanks Olly
  2. I'd love to but I'm in a part of the world where that just wouldn't fly
  3. The lad at the local garage filled my 300tdi with petrol. I didn't realise until 5k later as I pulled into the drive and it started to splutter. When I unscrewed the filler cap it reeked of petrol. Having done a search I get the impression that there won't be any damage and that small amounts of petrol in the system can be be diluted to a safe level by filling up with diesel. However the tank was was on reserve when it was filled so its full of petrol that has to come out. So what's the most user friendly way of emptying the tank? Is it feasible to empty the tank by separating the fuel line some where between the tank and the filter, (as near to the tank as possible) to let the fuel out and then pressurising the tank with compressed air from a diving cylinder? All ideas gratefully received.
  4. Brilliant timing, I'll be doing this in the next day or so. Thanks
  5. Sorry for the late reply, some how I didn't subscribe to my own post Yep that's a good start but I was wondering if anyone had come up with "designer brackets" and easy / clever ways of stashing the tanks.
  6. Are these the ones? http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9426527&fh_view_size=10&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB&fh_search=rat&fh_eds=ß&fh_refview=search&ts=1260840906940&isSearch=true
  7. Despite the dog and several feral cats these things seem to prosper yet I never see them, only the evidence. The noise devices sound interesting but I've never heard of them could you let me have a bit more info. Elephants ........ ROTFLMAO too funny
  8. Sorry for the delay & thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I can see that I'm going to be employing a combination of all of these things. Wish me luck
  9. Just to clarify the original was a 110/Defender with a 3.5V8 and manual transmision Thank you every one for sharing your thoughts and for the private emails. Its all been a great help and I hope to get started with it next week. Olly
  10. I'm not too sure if its true or not but I heard the Disco 1 has a separate loom and the Disco 2 has it integrated. Any how my proposed donor is a Disco 1 with 65k kilometres
  11. I'm thinking about converting my 1987 110 v8 3.5 manual to a 3.9 efi auto taken from a Discovery. I've searched the forum including the Tech Archives but I can't find anything specific to this conversion. Any and all help gratefully received
  12. Thanks for posting that its exactly what I was looking for. The simplicity and use of original gear is excellent.
  13. I need to fabricate a couple of boat axles and to keep commonality between the wheels & tyres I'm planning on using 110 hubs. Does any one know where I can get "bearing buddies" from or the size that I need? Bearing buddies, (I think that's the right name), its a cap that fits where the standard dust cap goes. Its fitted with a grease nipple on the outside and a spring arrangement on the inside. It acts as a small grease reservoir that allows a slight but positive pressure to be exerted on the on the grease and the bearing keeping water ingress to a minimum. TIA Olly
  14. I'm looking for ideas on how to configure my Defender to carry five divers using doubles and stages. Specifically I'm looking for ideas on racks, tie downs, accessibility and the ability to give the interior a serious hosing on a weekly basis. I know its a vague question but I'm looking for some creative ideas. Photos would be brilliant. TIA Olly
  15. I've just discovered that I've got a rat problem! I moved house about a year back and long story short due too a mixture of chores and idleness the vehicles have sat unmoved in various states of disrepair for the entire time. This week I decided it was high time to get the fleet back on the road so armed with a power washer I popped the bonnets for a quick spruce up. I was met with total and utter devastation. Five motors trashed, every piece of rubber with the exception of the large radiator & turbo hoses had been chewed. In places there were several inches at a time missing. That prompted me to look at my daily driver and they'd started on that as well albeit to a much lesser degree. Mousers aren't an option, there are more than enough feral cats roaming the place and they clearly can't keep up with things. So my question is what can I do about it? Are hoses available that are made from something they find repellant? TIA Olly
  16. If its not too much trouble I'd also appreciate that info Thanks Olly
  17. If its not too much trouble I'd also appreciate that info Thanks Olly
  18. I had similar symptoms once which turned out to be the inside of the turbo hose delaminating. As the hose further deteriorated so it got worse. It might be worth a check HTH Olly
  19. I developed a similar but intermittent problem with unidentified and at times severe vibration. I looked at the usual culprits on several occasions but nothing was obvious and I ignored it. Very foolish as eventually the steering pinched, (a first), preventing me from taking a curve. Thankfully it was in the middle of nowhere and I was able to safely pull over. Long story short it turned out to be the steering box which was progressively working it self loose. HTH Olly
  20. I'm in much the same position, except that the trailers have to be road going. I have them running on Land Rover rims. How feasible and how much benefit would there be in fitting longer wheel studs to the hubs allowing the trailer to travel to the site on single rims and on arrival bolt on our vehicle spares?
  21. Hi, hope you don't mind me chiming in, its my first post after a long lurk Several years back I put my 300tdi in for a service at the local LR agent and after went into part of the desert for a jolly. We were a good way through when the truck packed up and wouldn't play. We took the rocker cover off and found that a number of the posts were really loose which allowed the shaft to flex resulting in the pictures below. The tightest of the rocker posts whilst loose were still in place and could be tightened down but for the others the movement of the bolts had elongated the threads in the head. Using strands of nylon rope to take up the slack and pack out the elongated threads the remaining bolts were were very gingerly tightened down. Long story short we put it all back together lining every thing up as best we could and drove it out of the desert and several hundred kilometres home. When we got back I stripped it down and found no damage other than some of the rods and their corresponding cam followers. The only conclusion that I came up with was that the posts had been loosened during service and not properly torqued down after but I can't begin to imagine why they'd do that. I do all my own work now! HTH Olly
