  1. That is the link I was trying to remember. I have sent a PM reply anyway with how I did it.
  2. I have recently bought an LR3 (Discovery 3) And want to tool up properly so I can diagnose most of the problems on my own. And with the complex electronics I want to buy a Diagnostics scanner but don't want to spend a lot. I already have diagnostics equipment for every car except for Jaguar / Land Rover. I recently came across Terrafirma Handheld Scanner for Land Rover, Range & Jaguar TF930 i930 icarsoft These are around £100 on Ebay and a little more from the manufacturer themselves. Are they any good? I know there are a few different diagnostics tools available but some are extortionate prices. And once I have chosen one, I will be happy to plug anyone's Land Rovers in if they come to me. I look forward to the debate Just got to go and get the pop corn ready lol Please play nicely though.
  3. But my 2.2 Sri dti Vectra is lovely and hot after 1.5 miles and my last td5 was hot within 3 miles. I might just be chasing a non existent problem then. However it is all due a service so might as well keep on top of maintenance while I can lol
  4. £200 was to fit only. I am supplying the part
  5. I am going to describe the symptoms in this reply. When I first got the car I noticed it took longer for the cooling system to heat up to use the heating than my last TD5. And since the weather has turned as cold as it has it takes nearly 8 miles most driven at about 50-60mph before the temperatire gauge will go above the quarter way mark. And then I try and put the heating on again and the gauge moves up a bit more then give the accelerator some welly and the gauge finally moves to slightly above the halfway and bam, I have nice hot heating. I have checked my coolant level and every 6 weeks roughly I lose about 2 cm of the level out of the bottle. But no obvious signs of leakage. The first thing that came to mind for me was maybe the thermostat is sticking, and I also have a squealing noise coming from the engine (one of the pulleys), not investigated that fully yet but have ruled out the air con and alternator units with silicone spray. And it only happens once the engine is warm and has been driven more than 15 miles. But figured I might as well shove a new belt, water pump and thermostat on and give it fresh anti freeze at the same time. I was going to get a garage to change the coolant but the prices I have been quoted, they can shove it. I would rather stand in the cold with a mate and do it myself than pay £200.
  6. Most cars require the pump being replaced at the same time as the cambelt although this is chain driven, and the average price for water pumps on other cars is £30 ish. But I think over £80 is insane. As it happens I have a tiny amount of coolant being lost somewhere. So figured I might as well chance the lot. I will be looking at all the coolant system next week and will replace any pipes at the same time if needed.
  7. Have you got one fitted to yours Reb78?
  8. I hope that this post is allowed and is not being posted to cause any arguments but I know there may be a lot of strong opinions on brands. I am fairly convinced that 2002 Discovery TD5 needs at the very least a thermostat and possibly a water pump. However as I don't have the history showing when the pump was last replaced I have decided to throw some money at the Discovery while I have it. I haven't got much but enough to get a few jobs done. I have been looking at water pumps and have seen several different brands including Airmax and Britpart. I looked at the genuine Land Rover ones but they are over £80 + VAT. Where as the others start at around £18. I don't want to buy a cheaper part that is only going to last 5 minutes but need to save money somewhere as I have already over the last 2 weeks spent a huge amount of money on the car and am running out pretty fast. Can anyone suggest a good brand from there own personal experience please? Thank you
  9. Cheers. I will refit the rooftails with sealant on them when I get the lining down. For now while there is no good enough weather I will keep drying the car out. And excuse the word rooftails. My phone auto corrected roof rails for some reason and now won't let me alter it lol
  10. Thank you. I will add this to the ever growing list of things to sort lol
  11. Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem as me and if so, if they knew what it was. I have a 2002 52 Land Rover Discovery with twin sunroofs. I went to change the CD Changer and found the carpet is totally soaking wet. The dealer I bought it from said the sunroofs don't leak, but I don't believe a word out of his mouth anymore. The other day when I jet washed the car the front passenger corner of the roof lining got soaked. And over the last 2 days I have been talking to the actual last owners who sold the car to the dealer. And they told me that the BCU and ECU were destroyed by water from a leaking sunroof which rendered the car a non runner. Obviously the dealer got it running and the saw me coming lol. I give up arguing with the dealer. So I am now just getting on with fixing the car. As to be honest. I LOVE IT. Despite the faults. Where should I start looking to get this sorted? Cheers
  12. No I am not making it up. Just fed up of people who don't know me calling me a liar!!! When other people have stated they are getting the same mpg as me! And sick of my email going off with replies from ppl calling me a liar. I got the answer I needed. Resolved the poor fuel economy issue and then get a load of keyboard warriors jumping in. It's not on! So end of topic. Think what you want to think. I don't care!
  13. My Discovery 2 has a nasty scuff across the rear window where it looks like a wiper with no blade has gone across it. It is bugging me and it happens that I have a spare bootlid but in the wrong colour sitting in my garden. I would like to get the windows swapped over. How do you get the window out please? Cheers
  14. I can't believe this topic is still going lol. I gave the figures I got and you lot calculated them. My Disco is good on fuel now. End of lol. I have had some Disco's that have been really carp on fuel and some really good on fuel. The only Discovery I have had that had a lot of performance upgrades including the performance head, larger intercooler, remap etc... Was my 1996 Manual Disco 300TDi. Which I miss badly and that happily achieved over 40mpg regularly when not towing. End of topic. lol
  15. I have never heard of that term before. But I have always got good MPG out of my cars. I have since reading your reply look it up on Wikipedia, I won't be doing half of that carp. Although it did make me realise that there is another thing I do on Motorways. As long as the fast lane is clear, If I see a large lorry ahead of me I will where possible and without holding other people up get into the fast lane to get as far from them as possible, but that is more to do with an accident I was in many years ago where I was driving up the middle lane overtaking a foreign lorry and he pulled into the side of me and flipped me on to the opposite carriage way into on coming traffic. So I am a lot more weary of lorries. Although I am not saying I am a perfect driver! As I don't do all this all the time. But do most of the time.
  16. The miles from a to b are the same as the journeys I do are very repetitive and being doing them for 3 years in many different cars, The speeds according to my Sat Nav are reading the same, My nav always told me on the last Disco that I was going 3mph less than the speedo appeared to read and that is the same with this one. They are both ES models and auto's with 7 seats, both had towbars, nudge bar, but this one doesn't have side steps yet. The journeys I do when I get the best MPG reading is using cruise and barely a hill in site. Only very slight inclines but all fast roads. I am not usually heavy footed. I rarely have more than 1 passenger, I keep my window open a bit at low speeds and shut above 40mph, I have wind deflectors, And I maintain steady speeds most of the time. Obviously when I was towing my mpg figures weren't as good. And I must add, the weather conditions have been good too. My Discovery doesn't smoke at all, neither did the last one, And I mainly use 1 company for fuel. (Tesco), I never use Shell as they are expensive and rarely use Jet but so on occasion, and Sainsbury's is another company I use but as little as possible. The tyres are all 36psi during the summer on all my 4x4's and 34psi in Winter. And I use the gears to slow down and avoid using the brakes. I also normally make sure that I only have what I need in the car. I haven't towed with my current Disco yet so not sure on mpg figures on that side of things yet.
  17. I am not the only one getting good MPG out of my TD5, there are other people who have replied to this post saying they are getting good MPG too. It is down to condition of the vehicle's mechanicals and driving style and conditions.
  18. Also depends on the roads used too. I am in a mostly flat area.
  19. No, I wasn't filling it from empty. Please re-read what I wrote. I had a full tank and then did the mileage, and then filled it to the brim after that mileage. 272 miles put the needle from above the full white line to just above the 3 quarters line. I then filled it again from 3 quarted of a tank. It cost me £42 of diesel to approc a quarter of a tank of diesel. I tell you now. If I got 272 miles out of 1 tank of diesel, This Disco would have gone in the ditch on purpose lol I am getting around 37-38mpg on a run after giving a damn good run with various speeds and using Wynns diesel treatment stuff. I put the same stuff in my Vectra to and it has made one hell of a difference to how the Vectra behaves too. I think I must have had some carp in the fuel system as it also feels a little more powerful too.
  20. The Viscous fan isn't seized. I have put Wynns fuel system treatment in and the fuel economy has improved slightly. On the London to Brighton run I filled it to the brim to the 2nd click not the first. I did a total of 272 miles and I filled it up again on the way home. 272 miles was the reading after I reset the trip meter on the 1st refill. I filled it to the brim again and I got 272 miles out of £42 of diesel at 128.9p a litre. I haven't worked the MPG out yet on those figures. The 272 miles consisted of Motorway driving and town driving where on quite a few occasions where I got stuck on red lights I had to floor it to catch up with the convoy in small stages, but mostly steady driving. I haven't changed the fuel filter yet or checked the Air flow meter either.
  21. I didn't even consider that. Cheers. I will have a look on Saturday evening when I am on my way up to London. I will check before I leave and at the services on the way up and see. Or is there an easier way to test it? Cheers
  22. WOW, that was all a very interesting read. After I have done the London to Brighton run on the 5th, I will change the fuel filter and stick some diesel fuel system cleaner through the system and see what difference that makes. I don't tend to do a great deal of short journeys. The average trip out is normally a minimum of 35 miles round trip as I don't shop in my local town as everything is tourist prices all year round. So usually about half an hour to the nearest town. And I normally go the most level and steady route and do a lot of driving at around 60mph so get to use cruise a lot. As for the comment about cruise control making cars drink fuel. Will I have to say that is a load of old bol**x. Every car I have had with cruise and that is more than I can remember have always been better on fuel as the car is made to do a steady speed and the cruise control is designed for a car to remain at 1 speed without too much pressure on the accelerator meaning that less fuel is forced through and mostly only the right amount is pushed through. I will have to also give my car a service too and see what that does to fuel economy. My temperature gauge sits about 1mm higher than the half way mark where as my last Disco only sat on the half way mark. Thank you for all your comments. They have all helped me in one way or another.
  23. I always check mileage and how much to fill to the brim and get it calculated on line. And not sure if last one was tuned or not.
  24. Gear change is better, it seems a little quicker, tyres and wheels are the same size, the engine runs a lot better although I am sure it makes a much louder woosh sound more of the time like the viscous fan is spinning fast all the time where as my last td5 seemed quieter. Could just be me over thinking it though. But at the same time this engine isn't adjusting the rear suspension as and when the other did as it is a coil conversion and so far I have had a lot less stuff in this one including not lugging my tools around. It was last serviced end of 2013 less than a couple of hundred miles done between the service and when I bought it. And I live on cruise control where I can to also save fuel. I know the Disco had a shock when I picked it up, it went from doing virtually nothing for 8 months to a massive 70 mph motorway journey in 1 day. I guess it is a case of service time again.
  25. Hi, I have a late 2002 Land Rover Discovery TD5 Auto. And a previously had an early 2002 TD5 Auto Discovery. My early 2002 Disco was achieving between 32 and 38 mpg on average. But my current Disco is only getting between 24 and 27 mpg on average. The only major difference I know of is my first one had air suspension and my current one has been converted to springs on the rear. Other then that they are both the same spec even the same colour. I have even gone as far as putting the same psi as always do in my 4x4's all round and the engine seems fine. I have already covered over 600 miles in it. Any ideas as to why such a difference in the fuel economy? Cheers.
