can anyone translate my MOT?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Got the old girl back from MOT to-day and to my great surprise she passed. Now, I'm not one for hanging around when they say "yes it passed" so when I got home and looked at all the test results I was a bit mystified.
Smoke test.
peak 1. 2.53 m-1
peak 2. 1.01 m-1
peak 3. 0.96 m-1
peak 4. 1.78 m-1
average 1.25
MOT result 1.25 PASS
Brake Test
service brake test
test speed 26 km/h
stopping dist. 5.0 m
front-back deceleration
peak 76%g
average 52%g
left-right deceleration
peak 4%g
vehicle pulls Right
MOT pass figures: service brake test, 50% secondary brake 25% parking brake 16%
I know it's a lot but could somebody translate this data for me and tell me if it is good or bad.

does anyone know how to set the headlight beam aim? in haynes they used to show you dimensions with your lights shining on a garage door or wall but they now say get it adjusted profesionally. any ideas?

I have a 1991 def. 90 Tdi with a leaking steering box. It is a six bolt jobby but I have been told that originally it would have been a 4 bolt. I have noticed that 4 bolters are more thick on the ground that 6-ers, my question is, what should be there and can I replace my 6-er with a 4-er?

I swapped the switches round last night on the little centre console - so that my phone charger doesn't get in the way in 4th or 5th and so that I don't have to lean over to clean the back window....
and there is an unused block connector on the loom behind there..... anyone shed any light on what its for?
I've also noticed one behind the headlights .... is that for front fog lamps?
Anyone who wants to know how easy it is to swap them around - I've put pictres up in one of my albums: Link to first pic
original wiring for radio/cassette

Have just bought two new trackrod ends and they have a blue plastic cap/cover over the rubber boot
I guess these are to protect the rubber but my worry is if I fit the trackrod ends with these covers in place
then the MOT man would not be able to inspect the condition of the rubbers
should I leave these covers on or throw them away?

on new years eve, some t**t tried to steal my defender 90 200tdi, they didn't succeed but made a mess of my dash and smashed the steering shrouds. Anyway they have pulled off the wires from the ignition switch and I can't work out where they go back.
On the back of the ignition switch there are 5 spade connections, now here's the mystery, there were 6 wires hanging out of the dash.
1 white
1 white/orange
1white/red
1 white/black
1 brown
1 brown/red with a smaller one same colour crimped into the same lug.
the brown ones are larger sized wires than the white ones and the crimp lugs do not fit onto the spades on the ignition switch, however,on the floor of the landy was a brown wire with a big spade on one end and a small lug on the other, sugesting that it should go onto the switch, anyway by a bit of trial and error, I have got it going but I have got the big brown/red wire left and the white/black left and one free spade connector on the switch, now I know that there are spare wires all over the loom but the big brown/red seems a bit too significant to ignore. Can anyone help?

I'm a relative land rover virgin and my steering box is leaking, so when I started looking out for a replacement I discovered that the one fitted to my defender 90, was not the original, nor the type fitted in the factory. The one in my car is a 6 bolt Gemmer steering box and at a land rover show in the summer, I was chatting to a guy on the Adwest stand and he informed me that Adwest supplied all the steering boxes for defenders at that time (1991) and that the Gemmer was an aftermarket replacement.
It made me realise that just because it is fitted to our landies doesn't mean it's original.

How won't it install? nothing at all? errors?
a bit more info would be useful.
Did you pay much for it? do you have a decent broadband connection?
will not install, does not initiate the install wizard.
On the laptop (vista) it will run (ie. it will go through every vehicle on the disc. instead of giving you the option of chosing your prticular vehicule.)
but it does nothing on XP. I paid £3.50 + £1.50 pp.)

Bought a microcat parts CD from estonia on E-bay last week but can't install it.
followed all the instructions even changed the computor date as per their suggestion but no luck.
I'v tried it on my laptop which runs on vista and tried it on my old PC which runs on XP but still no good.
any suggestions?

I cannot give high enough praise for MTF94 I bought some from my local LR dealer and it cost £28 inc vat for 5 litres so only used half but what a diference it has made
still nochy but much quieter and almost from day one, at first I thought it was the old placebo effect but no, it realy has helped.I have had so many people say "if land rover meant to put it in they would have done" but I think they are missing the point. things move on and improvements are made. Land rovr may not be too happy to admit that their old oil is carp. Try it.

will a defender 110 gearbox and tran/box fit into a defender 90? same engine, same year.

what do you mean when you say reverse ear was "fatter"?

following clutch change on my 1991 defender 90 (102K) I now have a strange clunking noise when changing gear.
I had the usual transmition slack before (and still have) but what I have now is as follows.
from standstill into first, no noise.
from first to second, second to third and third to fourth, a clunk when I depress the clutch and another when I select a gear.
from fourth to fifth and from standstill to reverse, no noise
It only happens when going UP the box but not down.
When I was re-fitting the gearbox I struggled to get the thing into the engine and I was a bit heavy handed with it,
do you think that I have damaged anything when putting the gearbox back?

going to the LRO show in september and fancy the off road course, but never done any off roading before.
There are two courses available, woulde the basic course be OK for me and would I need recovery points?

Hi All,
I've been looking for a rack for the 90 for a few weeks now, and there is one going near me for a 110 - standard box type galvanised, says it's 'believed to be' a brownchurch although it's obviously a few years old and doesn't look the same as those on their website. It's got 5 equally spaced legs (on each side).
I'm wondering if I'd be able to fit this to the 90, either by cutting it down to fit, or maybe fitting it full sized with additional front supports - either to the front corners of the wings, or angled back to the windscreen edge/bottom.
What do you think? I don't intend driving around with it all the time, only for trips, so would having the front extension and the additional supports make that too much hassle do you think - how are the extra support legs attached to the bodywork?
Any thoughts?
John
Forgot to add, if you are going to leave it long then a good way of fixing it to the windscreen hinge is to drive out the roll pin in the hinge and replace it with a long bolt and fix the legs to this adding a nylock nut.

I was in the same boat, looking for one for a 90, when a 110 came up at a good price so I had it.
I toyed with the idea of fitting two diagonal legs from the front of the rack to the windscreen hinge as I loved the idea of all that space on top,
the luxury of being able to carry full 8x4 sheetsof plasterboard and plywood got me salivating, but in the end I reconed that for the few times in a year
that I actually need to carry 8x4 sheets of anything, then sod it, they can hang over the back, so to that end I chopped it with a disc cutter and now it is a 90 rack.
One tip though, don't just cut the end off but cut a section out of the middle and weld it up, then you have your nice front and back end.
Good luck.

I'v taken my fuel tank out to attend to some rust issues (rust, on a land rover?, never) on my defender 90.
when I reinstall it and re-fill it what is the bleeding procedure?(language, please) prior to ignition and blast off.

dare I say this?
take a look at www.swporc.com
I am a member of that forum aswell and they go out laning at least once a month, all types of trucks welcome and nearly as friendly as this forum.
I`m not too far from you either
Russ
Hi Russ, cn't open www.swporc.com for some reason.

Is it advisable to replace the bolts and nuts when removing/fixing the prop shafts?
I was just thinking, what a garage would do if they were changing the UJs. probably use the old ones.

new defender owner aching to get some mud on my tyres but never done it before (a green lane virgin?)
-
what are your views on using old engine oil for rust protection in the chassis?
-
Although I have owned my defender for less than 12 months, I am getting a real feel for rusted nuts and bolts.
After I have drilled out, ground out, hack-sawed out, chiselled out or just shouted out all the rusted nuts and bolts that I have had to remove, I was thinking what should I smother them with to prevent the same problem 10, 12, or 15 years down the line.
some say copper grease but is a high melting point grease needed just to prevent corrosion? would a normal lithium grease do just as well?
-
why not fit a pair of those seat rail thingies that people with long legs fit to enable the seats to be pushed back a bit further than normal(can't remember what they are called) anyway they will raise the seats by about 30mm. should be enough to clear the battery terminals.
wheel bearing lubrication?
in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Posted
I'v read a few posts that suggest that wheel bearingd last longer if you "allow" the seal to leak oil into the hub, therefore lubricating the bearings with oil rather than relying on the grease that is suposed to provide lubbricaton. Any ideas?
