I have, some say LT77 some say LT77S others say R380, I am totally confused can someone kindly help me.
Defender 90 200 Tdi 1991 hard top, as far as I can see everything is original.

having got past the servicing and minor jobs, I find I need to replace my clutch. What (apart from my haynes) workshop manual do you reccommend?
I dont mind splashing out £40 odd, so long as it is worth it. What do you think of the "official" land rover manuals? are they worth it.

It can also be the release bearing disintegrating or melting (the stock ones are half plastic). Ask me how I know
OK fridgefreezer, I know you want me to ask, how do you know????????

Ive had this problem. Bleeding the clutch actually made it worse for some reason. New clutch master cylinder sorted it to 'like-new'
took the old unit apart and the bore was not scratched - the opposite shiny smooth but the seal was worn badly.
If its done more than 70k miles buy a complete new master ylinder there not expensive
thanks steve, do you think it would just go, (one day fine next gone) or do you think there would be some signs?.

this morning I drove my def. 90 200 Tdi about 6 miles to pick up something, but on the way back I found it increasingly difficult to change gear.
I managed to get home by keeping it in third and parked it on my drive. Now I can't select any gear at all.
I bled the hydrolics but it made no diffrence.
Now, just before this happened I did notice that the clutch was biting as soon as I started to lift my foot, and it wasn't like that last week.
Does this sound like my clutch has gone or could it be a problem with the hydrolics?

Yep, your 6 bolt is a Gemmer box & is the same as mine in a yucky bright green & was a replacement for the original steering box which was also a 6 bolt gemmer.
the man at the adwest stand said that a 1991 def 90 would have been fitted with a 4 bolt adwest box and the 6olt was a replacement.
what I want to know is, what is the proper replacement, a 6 bolt gemmer or a 4 bolt adwest?

I own a 1991 defender 90 and it has a 6 bolt steering box fitted which is leaking.
the make (I believe) is gemmer, it is painted bright green, which makes me think that it is not the original box.
today at the eastnor land rover show, I was talking to the chap on the adwest stand, and he informed me that originaly, a 1991 defender would have been fitted with an adwest 4 bolt steering box, now, my dilemma is about what box to buy, a 6 bolt or a 4 bolt, my worry is, was the pipework changed to fit the 6 bolt box and will I be able to sort it out if I buy an original 4 bolt box or should I buy another gemmer 6 bolter?

can anybody explain how to replace the gearbox mainshaft in an LT77S defender gearbox? After reading all posts on reasons for transmision slack I have come to the conclusion that I will have to repace the mainshaft in the gearbox and the mating gear in the T/box.
If it has been covered elsewhere could you direct me to it.

loud knocking noise more apparent on acceleration = big ends.
They are normally changeable in situ.
Please do say what engine it is you are talking about. If it is a Renault 4 I have no idea.
no not a renault 4 but a 200 TDi defender

can anyone describe the sound made when the big end bearings are going? I'v had a noise appeare lately, a load knocking, low down on the engine, but only when engine revs are high, not on tick-over.
If it is big ends, can they be replaced with the engine in situ?

can anyone recomend an oil filter wrench/spanner /socket for a defender 90?
I have one that is like a piece of chain with a socket on the end which works fine on other cars where
access is not such a problem, but on a defender?.

popped out to the spar for some tinnies just now and my 90 TDi has lost all it's get up and go
I noticed this the other day when I was trying to overtake a lorry at 60 (normally not a problem) but I just couldn't manage it.
Anyway tonight it was worse, second gear foot to the floor couldn't get over 30. it has been running ok untill the other day
any sugestions?

whilst replacing the brake shoes on my 90, I noticed oil was getting onto the inside of the brake backplate, it seems to be comming from where the hub meets the backplate, I'v checked the old haynes but I cannot work out whether it is the hub seal or the stub axle seal. any ideas?

I have just bought a defender 90 and the horn is, well, pathetic, so I thought that a air horn might be the thing.
the only problem is that in the pack is a relay, and I don't know where this relay should be wired into, any idea's?
Moly grease or Lithium grease?

I am about to replace my clutch and have read that I should use molybdenum disulphide grease on the lever pivot, the slipper pads and the release bearing carrier.
Is this a special grease (and therefore neccesary) or will normal lithium grease do?
