  1. Hi Jim Never really understood advance/retard and btdc. Would going from 6 deg btdc to 10 deg be retarding the engine? Cheers Nick
  2. I have a 1997 Camel Defender that has a black speedo transducer attached to the transferbox (no speedo cable just wires). Can anyone tell me the part number it starts AMR I think?
  3. My gearbox in my 300tdi defender seems to have developed an extra gate beyond the 5th/reverse gate. If you push the lever into the position to go up for 5th and down for reverse you can with a bit more force now pull it over what seems like one more gate. Is it broken and what could have gone wrong as the apart from that it seems to be operating normally. Thanks Nick
  4. The full beam flash operated by pulling back on the left column stalk has stopped working. Could this be contacts in the switch or is there a relay somewhere? The full beam comes on when you push the stalk forward just no flash when pulled back. Thanks Nick
  5. I think the best ones are the radio and non radio one supplied by Foley Specialist Vehicles. Very nice and good quality. I have three!!
  6. Can some one please measure the height of the middle of the front wheel arch eyebrow on their standard 300tdi 130. Mine sagged when I put on a large winch and bull bar. I have now put on some other springs and it is sitting at 91cm from the floor to the wheel arch eyebrow. The 130 is on michelin XZY 7.50-16 Tyres.
  7. my microcat seems to say FTC1994 is superceded by UQB000130. Does anyone know the difference?
  8. speak to a britpart supplier - they do a kit for double shocks. You need to weld onto the axle new mounts and drill/sleeve new holes in the chassis and move/bend the exhaust
  9. I believe that genuine land rover are a good choice. Although if you are running the 130 fully loaded as mine is: Last stop at the weigh bridge was: Front Axle: 1300kg Rear Axle: 2250kg (bit of a shock as I did not have all the camping gear and fuel on board) Trailer: 1000kg Then if you are experiencing some bouncing of the rear of the vehicle on bumps then twin shocks at the rear would be the way to go. Additionally with genuine shocks it is easy to find replacement bushes and washers if you need them. Cheers Nick
  10. sounds good. Microcat seems to say that the cat tune resistor is white but the non cat one is green. So I fit the green one and a new downpipe and even when I break the oxygen sensors trying to remove them it will not matter?
  11. I am taking a V8 Auto 1997 Disco to Africa where it will run on leaded fuel. The current mileage is 86,000kms. Do I need to remove the cats? I understand that I do not have to remove them but they will be damaged and will eventually clog up. Is it possible to get the front exhaust section with no cats for this car and then what do I do with the Lambda Sensors? Thanks Nick
  12. I was told by a LR Dealer Mechanic that there is a black coating on the new type gaskets (PET part number) that the black coating on the metal gasket is supposed to bond when it heats up and that using silicone on this gasket prevents this action. Also you should ensure that the mating faces of the block and the waterpump housing are flat - you can sand the waterpump housing on some glass with sandpaper. Additionally down by the alternator there is another bolt for the waterpump housing you may need a piece of gasket to go there as a spacer so the housing is mounted squarely.
  13. Nice looking Land Rover. It looks as if it has had a re-spray as I dont think that colour would have been avaliable from the factory. Did you buy private or from a dealer? As to the clunk - others have described the possible culprets, but......how bad is the clunk. if you are used to a little eurobox then even a new Landy driven unsympathetically can be persuaded to produce a clunk. Check the Prop-shaft UJ's first. Remember to release the hand brake when you check the rear one or it will be too tight to detect wear. Then check the rear axle ball joint with a suitable big bit of steel. Also looks like your bonnet safety catch is bent. when the bonnet is open the catch should be pointing down so it aligns with the hole in the slam pannel. It is easy to straighten so have a look at it.
  14. I have been looking into fitting a cut-out switch to my winch but have a question??? White 90 what amps are the cut-outs you have used on your winches rated at and what is the maximum draw that your winch would make when under full load?
  15. I have a 300tdi Defender with Power Steering. My brother in law has been using it and now when I get it back the steering no longer self-centers. I have now replaced and reshimmed the king pin bearings and still no luck. The power steering seems to work fine though. Any ideas what to check next?
  16. I have a national luna split charge system and battery monitor in my defender with a 100ah main battery and 2 100ah aux batteries. I have a number of times left the vehicle for 2 to 3 months and have not come back to any significantly discharged batteries. you could start at the fuse box and extract fuses until you find the culpret for your 0.7amp drain...
  17. Hi Jim If the new hoses are genuine LR then I would replace your ten year old hoses. In my experience a burst radiator hose meant a cooked engine as the temperature gague does not start moving until the engine is boiling. I think you have a VDO gague fitted but am sure you spend more time looking at the road rather then the gague!! Do you use aircon - as it is also easier not to smell leaking coolant when a hose bursts if you have the windows and vents closed. On the other hand if the replacement are non-land rover I'd say stay as you are. Non genuine ones dont seem to be as good - they might be ok in UK where most tdi's seem not to have to work too hard. I had one fitted in Nelspruit a few years ago and it was leaking at a joint by the time I reached Joburg. If you take care, as I know you will, you will not get any leaks from the new connections so that should not put you off changing them. Also follow the correct bleeding procedure and replace the plastic plug on the radiator and the thermostat housing with the brass type with an o-ring (see www.zeus.uk.com). For a laugh check your hose that comes from the heater pipe over the cylinder head and goes over the water pump - check the underside in the area of the support bracket over the water pump. The other hose to check is the one coming from the heater assembly that goes into the cylinder head - check it where the rubber engine cover rubs on it. Cheers Nick
  18. I have actually replaced the bearing with the transfer box still fitted in the vehicle. I had to replace the oil seal at the same time. It was a relatively simple operation but even with a timiken bearing as a replacement some movement in the bearing could still be detected when you tried to move the propshaft up and down.
