  1. I assume that the diagnostics pointed to a particluar wheel sensor. If the disc is that bad perhaps you had better change it anyway, my 04 reg had an MOT failure last year because the discs were worn. However if you think about it the lights should go out before the vehicle moves so the condition of the disc or CV shouldn't matter, I would suspect the sensor or it's wiring and have you checked the HDC switch?

  2. I suppose there are two issues:-

    1. What happens to the film when the heated rear window comes on. I assume that you have checked that it's OK for temperature.

    2. I personally wouldn't run the risk of the film coming off inside the door when the glass goes all the way down and screwing up the mechanism. The window works on a sort of servo mechanism that tells it when to stop and can be tricky to set up. But perhaps I am being ultra careful here.

  3. I am on my third Freelander, an X reg 1.8, TD4 52 plate and now an 04 reg TD4 auto. Apart from the 1.8 having a gasket problem I haven't had a problem with any of them. Generally the TD4 is the better buy since it's a BMW engine and during BMW's ownership of Landrover they made a few improvements to the vehicle which are not obvious from the outside (sorted out rear tyre wear problem, some changes to electricals etc). If possible get a TD4. The TD4 Auto is a combined manual/autop and is very good, I have done over 60K with no problems.

  4. I take your point Fridgefreezer but his problem was that no matter how much welly he gave it the guy he was with saw the wheels lock up one by one until he had none left at which point the engine was stalling and the car was going nowhere. He said that he had pulled the boat before over muddy terrain and damp sand etc but it was only on a shingle beach that the drawbacks in the system became apparent.

  5. In theory it should work fine but a colleague of mine thinks otherwise. He had to pull a boat trailer up a shingle beach with his Freelander and found that the problem was that as each wheel lost grip on the pebbles it would be locked up by the "intelligent" four wheel drive system until he had no drive wheels left! What he really needed was to be able to switch the system off and just let them spin up the beach. He did eventually get off the beach but he had to keep trying to get the boat moving. I guess the system is OK if you are not towing. I don't know how big his boat was.

  6. I have a 2004 Freelander TD4 auto with 61K miles and recently noticed a bit of an oily mess forming on the intake pipe. Please see attached photos. I don't think it's coming from the dipstick as this remains relatively clean. Has anyone any suggestions, should I remove the piework and just clean it up etc? or is it the first sign of something more sinister? The crankcase filter has been replaced (by a garage) every 12K miles.

    Thanks Dennis

PS what does the sensor on the pipe do?

  7. I can't speak for petrol freelanders but I had something like this once on a car a few years ago and it turned out that I had the ignition leads in the wrong order. (in those days you would immobilise your car by swapping two plugs leads over to stop it being hot wired and stolen)

  8. Faults like this are invariably due to a poor earth somewhere. I would start by removing rear light clusters and cleaning everything up, I found that mine were half full of water once. Next step is to clean up all of the earthing points that you can find. Best of luck.

  9. I have a 2004 TD4 auto, this morning I heard a buzzing noise from behind the drivers seat when I turned the key and before the engine started. The car runs OK but it sounds like a fuel pump problem developing. Am I on borrowed time and how easy is it to replace given that I am going to drive to the South of France in a couple of weeks ?

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Cheers Dennis

  10. The driver's side passenger door has the least used window in most cars and herein lies the problem. (if you have one rear passenger they often sit on the other side so that they can see the driver) It doesn't get used enough and starts sticking and then the mechanism breaks. I replaced the regulator unit (ie the winding mechanism) for about £80 on mine. It wasn't too difficult, just a bit fiddly, but you will need to remove the regulator either to fix or replace it. Depending on what has actually broken you might get away with a wire repair kit which will be cheaper but I have heard of a few of these (especially the superglue variants) that have failed again.

  11. I don't know the Freelander petrol engine in particular but this sort of message usually comes up when something like the lambda sensor fails. This is in the exhaust systems and measures the oxygen level in the exhaust gases and controls the ignition and injectors via the ECU. The ECU then switches into a get you home mode with reduced performance, the problem can damage the catalytic convertor hence the urgency. The only sensible thing to do is find a (preferably independent) landrover specialist who can plug in his diagnostic machine and confirm the diagnosis. Otherwise if you can borrow a lambda sensor from someone else.........

  12. It's called marketing. Remember that all products start life as a point on a price/performance graph.

Incidentally there a a few threads on this forum regarding removal of the propshaft to make a freelander 2WD so I guess there is a market for 2WD LandRovers

  13. Well, I have an 04 reg TD4 and mine doesn't do it. It might be a dodgy sensor on one of the wheels not getting a proper signal until a wheel has rotated or perhaps there is a different ABS software release on earlier models. Does it always do it when you have stopped and switched off and on again?

  14. Yes most car speedos over read by about 5% and my satnav agrees with this, however my satnav also claims that a nearby beach is 130 feet above sea level so ......

  15. Don't know the actual answer to your question but I suggest you look at caravan club website or similar.

Incidentally if you are going to North Devon try this place, recommended .... www.westcountry-camping.co.uk

  16. Does anyone know if it is possible to alter either the temperature that a fuel burning heater cuts in on cold days or alternatively disable it? I thought they are only supposed to work below 5 degrees C but mine seems to cut in on warmer days than that.

  17. One further point, the auto box is tiptronic ie you can switch it into manual. This is especially useful when you set off on a cold day since the box is programmed to stay in low gears initally to warm up the fluid, this results in you screaming along in 2nd or 3rd with attendant high fuel consumption. I just drive it in manual for a mile or so then switch to auto.
