  1. No disrepect intended, you're just operating within the law

why? we are following the DVLA guideline issued to registered suppliers. we even had an audit last week by the DVLA and were praised for the level of records that we keep (both photocopy and electronic.

  2. Also you can buy 'legal' plates on evil bay without producing docs.

not technically legal, read the small print and they normally say for off road use only - that's how they get round the document laws. same as the little huts that appear at car shows - they class them as show plate, not for road use - it's then upto the owner if they risk using them on the road.

My point was say they bring in the check at mot how is the garage to know whether the car has an original plate or a showplate if the car was built before the bs number came in

most mot testers/mechanics can spot a newly made number plate, especially as the changes were made circa 10 years ago, any old plates will be showing signs of ageing by now from uv exposure and weathering to the plastics.

  3. In the 70s a 10 year old ford was a pile of dust and 4 tyres

    or 6 week old Austin's........

i'd personally just give the black coating that the new panels come in a light sanding with a finishing pad, just to give it a bit of a key before priming and finishing in the normal manner. most of the bodyshop types that i deal with leave it on, just attack any blemishes/pin dents before applying the first primer coat. it's there to protect the metal from corrosion during storage, and is electrostatically applied when the panel is made.

  4. That doesnt mean to say you cant still buy plates without producing documents, i bought one online not long ago for a trailer, the need to produce documents is nonsense really as the criminals will always find a way round it

true, there are ways around it, but the supplier (if caught) can get a fine of upto £3k per offence, and if you're caught then a picky jobsworth could fine you for having non approved plates. proper ones should have the BS mark and the suppliers name and postcode on the bottom. there are rumblings in the trade that plates will be checked at mot time for the bs marks etc.....and that the "show plates" as they are comonly known, will be a fail becuase of the lack of supplier details.

it's a pita system, but it does work. we had the police round to check our records as they found a stolen vehicle with plates on it that had our supplier details on, came and checked the records and found the name and address of the person who bought the plates, who turned out to be a locally well known criminal - muppet had got so cocky from not being caught, that he used his own id to buy the plates for a car that he'd nicked!!

  5. When I went to buy something from the motor factors I was told they couldn't sell me a plate for the trailer without the car documents but they could sell me a blank plate and the self adhesive letters, so I bought those and stuck them on myself

that is correct. the dvla require number plate suppliers to keep the details of all plates made for 3 years. we always ask for driving licence of the person collecting the plates (or passport/bank card/credit card) and the v5c for the vehicle so we can keep a record of the serial numbers for traceability. avoid halfords for plates, they are charging anything from £18 upwards at the moment (depending on style, plain, border, gb logo all add extra) whereas we charge £12 regardless of style or shape. (cheaper for trade or people the staff know :) )

  6. Wheel balancing? - wheels are off the green one, which had no issues

Rubber Donut? - swapped rear prop & doughnut from green one to eliminate

Wheel bearings? - did wonder, as there is a bit of a drone, but from the rears more than the fronts

Suspension bushes? - possible, they did appear ok when i changed the suspension over

  7. I have a slight vibration that can be felt under power, and cruising about 50 ish mph. It feels like it's coming from the front axle.

I have so far fitted a new front prop (old one had a knackered u/j when i bought the truck) & new front prop flange (managed to damage it when removing th old bolts - had to grind them out), but the vibes are still present. There is no discernible play from the output on the transfer flange.

The front prop is phased correctly (alignment marks are spot on), and everything else appears tight. Any ideas as to where to look next?

I know the rear prop is good, as i swapped it off my green one, which i didn't have any problems with.

My only concern is that the new prop was a britpart one icon_sad.gif supplied by our Bearmach agent.....next step is to either recon one of my spare fronts, or swap the one off the green one (which again didn't have any vibration issues)

  8. found it. it's the heater motor relay. for some reason the blue/red wire has been cut, and a live feed from the fusebox added. The heater blower works, just not sure why it's been cut. Something i suspect to do with the non working air con switches......hmmm, as long as it blows hot air through the chilly months, it can wait until spring to be sorted
