  1. Is the donut visibly deteriorating by any chance? Does it look like it's ever been replaced? The reason I ask is that my 98 Disco sounded similar to yours, until one day the donut disitergrated on a slip road and destroyed the rear diff as it went. Had the donut been replaced then the dodgy bloke who flogged me the car would have had me offloading it onto his forecourt on a Sunday morning. Anyhow. Someone who knows more than me will be along soonish.
  2. My Disco 1 sunroofs rattle like buggery on anything but a perfectly smooth road. I've been over and over them and can't get them to stop. So I just keep them closed as it avoids breaking the seal I have created using grease to stop water leaking in when parked on an incline. I now just look at them as if they are emergency exits, and believe me, my missus had to use a sunroof as an emergency exit on one of our previous cars, so I don't rule it out.
  3. Magic. That's what I'm after. Do you happen to know whether they are already in the black plastic surround thing (technical term) that the old ones seemed te be in before their destruction?
  4. ...or I could pop down to Maplin and get you a new actuator - you know how I love fitting them.
  5. Personally I'd just take it back to the stealer and get it put back on testbook. It's amazing what they can do wrong, as you will recall from the time they told my ECU that all the doors in the car were open all the time regardless of whether they were or not. 15 minutes fiddling and they found the problem they had caused. Question is, do you want to risk it going back on testbook and aggravating your ABS/HDC/WD40 light problem?
  6. As far as POIs are concerned you can get a load of different ones of various degrees of use from here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtompoi.php That is just for TomTom but I bet there are overlays for other GPS units. There's even an overlay for Land Rover main stealers in case you want somewhere to avoid. I can dig out the address of the wetroads.co.uk overlay if anyone wants it. I just had a very pleasant weekend driving through rivers with it.
  7. TomTom is great when you're on the road, but bottles out big-time as soon as you get even a yard off the beaten track, so your best solution would be to get a PDA which is capable of running something else for all your off-road needs: I use good old-fashioned paper maps off-road, so I can't advise on that bit.
  8. I used to use a free programme called PDF995 for that. It installs on your system as a printer but when you send a job to it you are prompted to select a "save location" and it creates a PDF. It's going to depend how many pages you want to send to it whether it will be any good for you though. If you do loads it will either slow down or crash your machine.
  9. Good stuff. When you got the mirror glass was it in the black plastic surround or was it literally just the glass?
  10. In case it's not in my signature I drive a '98 300tdi Disco. A while back, for reasons I struggle to explain, someone decided to come onto my drive in the night and smash the glass in both my mirrors. On a light note, the missus drove for 5 miles before she spotted the mirrors were pointing the wrong way. The damage is only to the glass. The motors still angle the mirrors as you would expect, but at the minute I have Halfrauds replacement mirror glass stuck on in a haphazard fashion because I was in a rush the day it happened. I am ready to do the job properly and fix the mirrors up because I've now moved house and I don't reckon the same vandals will have followed me 80 miles across country to break my mirrors, steal my rear badge and key my paintwork. Again. So here's the problem: I just want - if they make such a thing - to get the mirror glass, already in the black plastic surround but without all the motor and the shell of the mirror. So just the flat bit really, which would most likely have to include the element/film for the mirror heater. I've looked around and seen various prices from over £130 down to about £12 but I don't know what any of these bits are because no-one provides photos or adequate descriptions. The nearest main stealer is too far away for a quick visit and they don't understand what I'm after when I phone (and I would prefer not to pay their prices). I've gone on a bit. In short I want: 1) to know if they make the part I'm looking for 2) to know if anyone has a part number for it 3) what the part number is for the n/s and o/s version 4) to be lead by the hand to a place where I can buy both parts 5) to know why I am procrastinating by fixing my mirros when there is clearly fluid being emitted from my steering box. 6) to be much more concise in future Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Mr. O
  11. I've always just used whatever came free (or very cheap) with my insurance - currently Lancaster insurance and previously Admiral. They tend not to be too bothered about trying to fix anything by the road and prefer just to drag it back to where you want and wash their hands of you. It's an ideal situation for me because I figure that if I can't fix it by the road on my own, neither can an RAC or AA bloke. Lancaster cost about £15 this year as I remember.
  12. .. and later the same day ... Mind you, it took £20 down the car wash and 14 hours polishing with my own tears to get it back to it's original 1998 shinyness.
  13. It's not a case of misbehaving - just a case of seeing how far you can get with a set of practically bald road tyres:
  14. Now then muddyplugger - do you want to tell these good people about the fact you now can't get your truck out of the garage - or shall I?
  15. You're right. I'll pretend it's not happening. The next few days should go like this: Me: Hello dear. I've sorted that rear bumper and it cost nothing to do. The Wife: It looks just as bad as ever. Me: Nope. Definitely fixed. The Wife: Great, we can spend the money you saved on a new washing machine. Me: Er...... The Wife: Are you trying to hide a set of very thick skis behind your back? Me: Let me explain ....
  16. I saw those bumpers at Billing and I thought they looked pretty damn good. Problem is that their guy said it wasn't compatible with my current tow-bar and I don't want to buy a new one of those too!!!. At the end of the day I'm a cheapskate (not an attitude that goes well with owning a land rover) so I was looking for a fix that meant I have change left for a 2" lift and some rock sliders.
  17. Hello there folks - I've been on holiday since the "great migration" from the old forum. Good to see things are coming on around here. Down to business - I've had my '98 300tdi for just over a year. When I first got it I noticed that the off-side (UK) end of the rear bumper was marginally lower that the near-side end. Over the past 12 months I'm pretty sure it's gotten worse, but I have been known to be extrenely paranoid about small issues on my Disco. While I was at Billing I happened to notice quite a few other 300 series Discos with what appeared tobe similar problem to a greater or lesser extent. So I'm wondering: Is this a common problem? Anyone else here had it or seen it? What does it take to get it fixed? Could any garage do the job? Am I just being paranoid again and worrying about another "feature"? Any help appreciated - especially hypnotism courses to rid me of the worry that I have every time I discover a new squeak or rattle. Thanks in advance.
  18. I definitely read that it was the 106 sunroof seal. Let me know how you get on because I can't continue pulling the boot floor soundproofing up every month to give it time to dry out. I was thinking of replacing the rear sunroof seal with the pug one instead of the 2 litres of silicone grease which are currently doing the job.
