  1. Looking at a D2 steering box, the unit does look similar apart from the drop arm, it's got an offset rather than straight (d1) or bent (def).

As for fixings, no idea. You'd really need them side by side to compare...thing is the D2 has been out of production for some time so if they did fit defenders with ease I would imagine someone on a forum would have documented it by now...

  2. I can agree with both options! Rebuilt my first box, the seal kit was only £20 so not expensive but the main shaft was badly pitted so a new seal didn't last long. Bought a refurbished model that lasted a few months before starting to weep...nothing major but eventually turned into a small puddle over night. In contrast my td5 steering box has 250k on it and is bone dry (yes there's fluid in it :P), I actually swapped this onto the tdi as its the daily driver.

I have a seal kit to try on the refurbished box but if the shaft is worn then it's a pointless excersise.

I've seen the odd brand new one up for sale but most are upwards of £500

  3. Next cold snap I'm going to pull the glow plug relay to see if there's any difference on a stone cold engine. My 200 usually catches on the 2nd revolution after preheat. Always let the light extinguish through habitual use of diesels!

With regards to fuel leak back, could you temporarily fit a clear inline filter to give an instant visual indication if the fuel has drain back over night?

  4. I did consider a re-con head to swap over but I got a whole engine with some new recent parts (turbo/starter/ injection pump) for a fair bit less than a head from turners.

I really want to get cracked on with the td5 as the shed being in a mess does my nut in, the engine swap will be an interim fix.

  5. The symptoms do point toward a head gasket failure, if the head wasn’t showing signs of wear then I’d have just taken the gamble on replacing it.

Having a working replacement will allow me to get this one refurbished at my leisure. Also having a set of spare ancillaries is handy.

  6. The old girl is feeling poorly.

On driving home from uplifting the suspension for the td5 I noticed that the old tdi was beginning to smoke rather more than usual. It was "normal" for it to have some black smoke when hauling from low down the Rev range but this usually cleared as the boost wound up...however we now have predominantly white smoke with some blue in between. It's idling rough too, almost sounding as if on 3cylinders.

Theres no pressurisation of the coolant hoses and the temp gauge is sitting bang on its usual spot, no mixing of fluids (yet). It got a head gasket a couple of years ago but this showed with the aforementioned symptoms. (Poor heater, erratic temp gauge, hard hoses)

Theres a fair bit of pressure evident on removing the oil filler cap.

So, initial thoughts are head and/or gasket issues. Since owning it's always had some blue smoke when cold but cleared when up to temp and it's overdue some TLC.

    Mulling over a few options;

    1) cheap option...whip off head and hope it's the gasket. (Albeit this doesn't solve the startup smoke)

    2) disco engines are available...buy/swap over the defender parts then rebuild original 200 at some point

    3) buy recon block and head and transfer ancillaries over

    4) send original unit for recon

Having a spare engine appeals, especially as the pickup is missing one...

    thoughts and opinions appreciated guys

  7. oh my that's just wrong.

Going with the Fast and Furious tuners handbook...Matt finish paint, screwed on arches and slammed...and a garish interior that would look great in a Chelsea truck.

Back to Goblin though, the Coyote Mustang V8 Capri: so many questions, so many issues. No answers.

Did they really stick a 500hp engine in a Capri and leave the standard brakes on it? C'mon 2.8injection legs with princess 4pots was a mod we did for 2.0pinto escorts....30yrs ago! Drivetrain? At the very least an old Cossie box/prop and diff would've coped...then the electrics... "A nightmare wiring up the old loom to the new"... really?? Didn't think Ford liked standalone ecu systems for their premium engines (unlike GM who will gladly tart out a specc'd up LS to fit anything).

They really missed a trick and could easily have spread that conversion out over a few episodes. Shame.

  8. We have eberspacher night heaters in the works' vans most will run 7+ hrs per day in wet weather to dry out gear in the back and then run off the timer through the night to keep things toasty. Mine has ran faultlessly for 6yrs (more than can be said for the tdci lol), and we miss them terribly when they fail. They're not the quietest in operation but highly effective.

  9. 3 hours ago, Shackleton said:

Agreed ^^^ This is telly... it's all pulp, Attenborough barely goes in depth these days, producers play for the big audience numbers and 9 out of 10 people don't give a flying FridgeFreezer's fist about how a spring mount is going to live somewhere else. Take it from someone who has lived this **** for the last year - if you want big numbers you have to sell yourself to the lowest common denominator.

On the build - there's plenty more SIIA's out there, go save one from a fate worse than hipsters. The only thing that I got a twinge about was the fleeting inference that they were doing something new. The one below has been around for years and is undoubtedly where they stole got the idea.

PS: as Mad_Pete called it half the vehicles on here would fall into the 'Restomod' genre if we were so inclined to identify with that scene. I want to drive my 45 year old RR every day... if that means a newer engine then I'm more than happy to oblige [and I paid gullible money for the best original car I could find]

Is there not a blue track car based defender doing the rounds also?

  10. I've got the terrafirma medium load +50mm on the White 90. Been on for 3years, performance wise they seem to be fine, it'll absorb speed  bumps and potholes with relative ease. I've got winch/bumper and a load of heavy sound deadening, carries 3-4 people most trips and tows fine. With the horse box and flatbed it sits as it should with the hitch in its lowest setting. Handling wise? It's a 90 on 265s with no anti-roll bars, although fully polybushed and it's as expected. It won't set a lap time but it's stable and predictable.

Biggest gripe is finish. Within a year the springs looked decidedly ropey, the shocks with plastic dust shields are holding up better though. According to terrafirmas catalogue they are now guaranteeing the powder coat on the springs for 2 years so it must've been a common complaint.

I am however looking at OME for the td5 rebuild, although there are some good reviews on the Koni HD and Blistein kits.
