  1. only used 1/2 gallon hand cleaner. Could't believe the amount of goo in the inlet manifold and connecting pipes. Rocky
  2. 300tdi up and running again after fitting new head gasket, did it today between showers. Thanks for the help and advice you guys have given me. The gasket has been upgraded and is quite neat. anyway shall check it out over the next few days to see that it is ok. Reghards, Rocky

  4. Thanks, I will, the tolerances are so close i suppose it won't make much difference. With a bit of luck it will be mobile Friday morning. Rocky
  5. Hi, i get the head back on friday and i need to get the head gasket from landrover. the one i have removed had three holes, on measuring the protrusion with a dial gauge the readings are about 0.55 to 0.7. according the manual three holes should be for 0.7100 to 0.8. the head has been off at some point cos there is a nice ring mark on no.3 piston, cambelt probs no doubt. because a three hole gasket came off would it be safer to put a three hole back (don't want to put another gasket on it just yet). advice will be greatly appreciated. Regards, rocky.
  6. Many thanks for all the help. I get the head back on friday, so hopefully the vehicle will get a good run out over the weekend. Cheers, Rocky
  7. Thank Jim, Haven't used and angular gauge before. Regards, Rocky
  8. Hi, as mentioned previously, blown cylinder head. removed the head yesterday before i went to work. when i got home took the head to an engineering works to have it inspected. It needs skimming--fortunately it will skim without reseating the valves. Two questions, are there any valve caps on a 300tdi, if there are then they are still on the head at the engineers (too much haste). secondly on refitting the head can anybody confirm the angular torque tightening on the head bolts, stage 2--60deg, stage 3--120deg, stage 4--140deg on the M12 x 140 bolts. Regards, Rocky.
  9. Hi, mine had the same problem, after changing the fuel filter (which had a nice green growth of moss on it) and putting an earthing strap from the battery to the engine it never failed to start (20 degrees below, i live in scotland). Hope this is some help. Regards, Rocky
  10. Many thanks for the replies and advice, i/ll post what i find under the head. Rocky
  11. Thanks mate, i'll whip it off at the weekend. I have rebuilt engines before but a long while ago ( getting lazy). After giving it some thought the gasket or head is probably blown between the pushrods as the engine is smoking a bit through the oil filler. Anyway i'll post a report. Regards, Rocky.
  12. Hi, i'm in need of some advice, the engine is blowing bubbles/fumes etc through the expansion chamber. If i tighten the filler cap it blows all the water out. This hasn't just happened it has got steadily worse. Having spoken to the landrover main agents and they said that it almost certainly is the head but it could be the block, which obviously would be a disaster. I'm quite prepared to put a new head on it but not go to the expense of another engine as it would be totally uneconomic. Has anybody had the experience of a cracked block blowing fumes into the water gallery? I removed the oil filler cap while the engine was running and there was some fumes coming out, but nothing like what blows out of the expansion chamber. The engine has done approx 140k. Regards, Rocky
  13. Thanks mate it's all there. Rocky
  14. Hi, anybody know where i can purchase chequerplate panels (to fit bottom of doors and wings etc) for disco 1 Thanks, Rocky
  15. Hi, i had a similar problem with mine although it is a 300 tdi, i ran a jump lead from the earth terminal to the engine to test the earth lead and the engine fired up as it should. so i connected an earth lead from the battery to the a/c housing and have had no probs since. Rocky
