Thanks for the replies, but the heater needs to be immersed in the fuel tank, the diesel in the pipe-line freezes underneath the vehicle and the faster you go the more the wind chills it. I have had my disco freeze twice, although the engine hasn't died completely I've managed to get home on tickover with a brief stop before and on hills to get some diesel into the pump. Hi,is it possible to get a ceramic fuel tank heater to fit a defender 90. I can remember a few years ago some hgv's had them fitted but don't know if it still is possible to get them and fit one to a 90. Temperatures have been really low this week, down to -18c and a few diesel vehicles nearby have had their fuel waxed. Mine has had a gallon of parrafin stuck in the tank and has been ok, but it would be nice just to flick a switch and have warm fuel. Hi, mine blew the gasket between no. 3 and 4 cylinders. It overpressured that much it blew the bung out of the thermostat housing. The top hose was always solid. But I also lost the heater. Hopefully yours is alright, but it does sound like a headgasket. If you do remove the head it would be a good idea to get it pressure checked and possibly skimmed. Regards, rocky

Hi, whilst under the bonnet at the weekend, i noticed that the spill pipe is wet with diesel where it joins with the pipe that goes across to each cylinder of the engine. Apart from being smelly will it make any difference to the running of the engine? Regards, rocky

Hi are you topping up or changing it, if topping up it should be the same chemical base as what's in it. If changing then providing it is flushed out it doesn't matter. I haven't used bluecol for years, but if i remember rightly it is ethylene glycol based--i use halfords at 50% which is glycol based. Regards, rocky

Hi, had to renew the top hose on my disco (leaking at the thermostat housing) should have changed it when I had the head off last year. Anyway, after removing it i found a deep gouge on the pipe where it had been rubbing against the top pulley. I have made sure that the new pipe is completely home on the flanges but there is only about 3/8" gap between that and the pulley. I have looked at disco rave cd and it seems that they are all the same. I would have thought that LR in their infinite wisdom would have come up with something a bit less critical!! Hopefully the pulley won't try to saw through this one. However that's my moan for today out of the way. Regards, rocky

Once again, thanks for the replies, when my disco finally coughs out, i'll start looking for another one. I'm hoping to get the winter out it 'cause the salt on the roads up here is phenominal, they were salting the roads last week in the rain!! I've been looking at a company near Brum that re-furbishes defenders--new galanised chassis and bulkhead, maybe that is the way to go--trouble is the disco's are comfortable and civilised. Hi,I have a disco 1 300tdi and get about 31 - 33 mpg and that is driving to work (36 miles round trip) on country lanes at about 60mph. It is reasonably quick to accelerate over 50 but not so much fun as a 3.9 V8. Regards rocky

Hi, just an update on the cv joint i thought was u/s. After doing a bit of off-roading near Glenlivet the clicking noise increased quite a bit--took the wheel off tonight and found the backplate bent, there was a rough bit on the disc that was catching and making quite a noise. Alway nice when you don't have to spend!! should have looked at it earlier. Regards, rocky

Hi, While pulling a large shrub out with my disco 300tdi i heard a loud clicking noise from the front offside wheel while on full lock, i presume that it is a worn cv joint. Is it an involved job to fit a new one or is it fairly straight forward? Any help appreciated. Regards, rocky

Hi, just got my disco 1 back from mot station (passed after spending a few quid) but i am now looking to tart up the bodywork a bit and i'm looking for some advice on what paint to get to spray the bits with. I haven't done any spraying for a few years so no doubt things have changed a bit since the 1980's but I still have a compressor and sprayguns. I'm not doing a respray just the tatty bits round the edges. Any help greatly appreciated Regards, rocky.

Hello mate, do it yourself, approx 7 hours to remove and replace + getting the head pressure tested and maybe skimmed. The local landrover garage quoted me £600 + vat, in the end it cost me £90 to get the head tested and skimmed, + gaskets and oils. Regards, rocky

Hi, My disco is getting really frayed round the edges but has a good 300tdi engine and drivetrain. Is it much of a job to fit the 300tdi and bits to a lightweight. rocky

Hi, i did mine a few months ago, had the head pressure tested and skimmed. I follwed advice on this forum and with a haynes manual. I used a genuine landrover headgasket and have had no probs since, over 3000 miles. Regards, rocky

Hi, I have a d1 and it does the same, you just have to slow down for the bends. We have had a lot of snow this last couple of weeks and i have to travel 20 miles to get to work (dufftown to the braes of glenlivet) and the disco has been brilliant with only road biased tyres. I used to have a series three which was ok but not as good as the disco. Regards, rocky.

Hi, I will be looking for a decent 300tdi 90 in the next couple of months and I've seen the Simmonites advert in the "Landrover International" mag. They do a refurbished 90 for £7999, painted in either military drab or desert storm. My question is has anybody dealt with this company and if so what are they like.
