  1. ive a few noisey tappets, but that dosent mean dont ive a tight one on the cylinder shes trying to start on, ill check them on monday. it almost seems that there is too much compression when warm, once it turns it starts its just getting it to turn, ive had the starter overhauled so all good there. maybe a new battery is the answer, cheers gary
  2. hi all, my 1990 90 fitted with a 300tdi and auto is suffering from a strange problem, starts when cold no problem, 2 or 3 turns, when hot it struggles to turn over and sometimes dosent. If i let it sit for 10min it starts no problem. im seeing no excess smoke form the xhaust on startup has any body experienced this problem before. Could it be hydraulic lifters not working when warm ? btw 200000 miles on engine. cheers gary
  3. hi all, ive a standard warn 8274 winch, noticed it down on power and took it apart. I found one broken spring on the brushes and a broken wire on another brush. The question is who supplies brushes for standard warn motors. cheers Gary
  4. hi all, thanks for the advice, im using new bearmach pistons and seals, and they're not shifting with 90 psi, so think ill split them and drill and tap. cheers gary
  5. hi all, im starting to overhaul a pair of rear calipers for my 90, has anybody any tips or hints for getting the old pistons out, btw, they have been sandblasted and sitting on the bench. cheers gary
  6. hi all bit of a strange one this, ive a 1990 90 fitted with a 300tdi and auto box, now and again maybe once a week the engine is very slow to turn over when its warm and doesnt start.this dose'nt happen all the time. I give it a jump start and it goes no problem. when cold it startes no problem at all. ive had the battery checked, all good and holding charge. ive added a new earth to be on the safe side and cleaned the existing ones. ive had the altenator output checked, all good. has anybody come across this before.im thinking maybe my starter is on the way out but thought i would ask some advice first. cheers gary
  7. hi all a few weeks ago my 300tdi 90 blew the head gasket, fixed that and all seemed well. Since the head gasket change it has been a bit smokey (oily smell) on start up but clears its self after a few miles. I thought this was valvestem oil seals, but it seems to be gettin worse. Yesterday i noticed a pool of oil below one of the joints in the exhaust, it looks like there's oil getting into the exhaust system. has anybody any ideas.. Is my turbo fecked.## cheers Gary
  8. hi all, I changed the cylinder head gasket on my 300tdi 90 at the weekend, i torqued the head as per the manual but im just wondering should i check the bolts again after a few miles hours etc and if so to what torque setting ?? hope this makes sense. cheers gary
  9. to be honest i hand'nt thought of a pto, i was thinking of a belt driven pump. but a pto would be probably be handier. I have a 300 tdi with auto box fitted, would it be possible to drive while winching using a pto or do you need to disengage the drive to the wheels>? i must have a look on ebay and see what a pto is worth . cheers gary
  10. hi all, i currently have a standard warn 8274 on my 90. I just use this for self recovery etc. I dont do winch events and have no plan to. The winch i have is on the front of my 90 but i seem to need a winch more and more at the rear, Im thinking of building a mid mounted hydraulic winch that could be used forward and back. Has anybody done this before, and what parts did you use. I live in a rural coastal part of ireland and there are lots of redundant fishing boats about with hydraulic haulers. so plenty of 2nd hand motors/drums about. All advice greatly appreciated. cheers Gary
  11. i converted my 90 to 300tdi auto. there are lots of bits and pieces required to do this conversion but on the whole its very easy to do. I bought a complete rotten disco for E150 which left me with all the bits i needed. oil cooler, power steering pipes, kickdown etc. cheers gary
  12. thin cutting disc in the small grinder and cut the head of the bolt. when the gearbox is off vice grips will remove the threaded part, or big hammer and a good sharp cold chisel and try and get it moving. cheers gary
  13. hi all, i have a 1990 90 that i converted to 300 tdi engine and auto box out of a disco a few years ago, the crank shaft oil seal seems to be leaking now. im wondering which is the most common/ easiest removed for this job. engine or gearbox out. i have access to a 2 post lift and also a pit and engine hoist. cheers Gary
  14. the gyn lewis ones are hard to beat for the money. cheers Gary

  18. hi all, after much looking thinking and saving i've finally got 2 nd hand true tracs. (front and rear) has anybody any advice about fitting them and getting the best out of them when i get them fitted. im putting them into my 1990 90 fitted with a 300tdi engine and autobox. cheers Gary
  19. hi all, i have a 1990 90 fitted with a 300tdi engine, the heater is the standard one fitted to the original 90 2.5 td with downward face pipes going to the martrix With the temp dipping i think ill fit a new matrix to the heater, last year it was flushed and it helped increase the temp in cab. So the question is can it be fitted in situ or does the heater box have to be removed?? cheers Gary
  20. hi Ian, hope this works, http://www.discoweb.org/truetracgears/index.htm so do you need to swap anything at all, or just mount the front truetrac on the rear diff ?? cheers Gary
  21. thanks for all the replies, i found a "How to swap your true trac from fron to rear" on discoweb. cheers Gary
  22. hi all, can a 24 spline front axle truetrac be fitted to the rear 24 axle ?? cheers
  23. hi, all im planing to flush my heater matrix at the weekend, has anybody used anything other than water to clean it and if so, what did they use, cheers Gary
  24. hi, a better pic wont be much good as its well tucked in between the tunnel and the hand brake, ill do some measurements for you and get my mate who can actually draw on cad or what ever its called and send the drawing of the mount i made over, im thinkin of recessing the gear changer into the actual tunnel for a tidier job, there is lots of room between the gearbox and the tunnel, and it would proably be a better job, but it would be further to reach to change gear. but as always theres always other wee jobs that need done and i havent got around to it yet. cheers Gary
