Options for auto shifter location
inchman replied to Arbman Al's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
it was no big deal to be honest, i just trimmed the auto selector out of the scrap disco, then made a spacer out of 3 mil plate that bolted onto the seat box and then bolted the changer on to it, i'll measure it for you when i get home, i was going to mount it flush but i had to space it out in order to change it to 1st if i needed to. i then cable tied the old rubber boot on top to keep it clean. cheers Gary -

before xmas the loom running from the bulkhead to the rear of the 90 (1990 2.5td) caught on a rag on the drive shaft and was ripped to shreds. i got a new loom and fitted it today. Everything is working except the fuel gauge. I know 3 wires run from the top of the tank to the bulkhead. white, green and black. Has any body any idea where these wires plug into the loom, or anybody any pics of their bulkhead with the wires attached. cheers Gary

It seems nipper already and when kicked down it really takes off. my question is, i removed the speedo sender from the drive and put the cabel in. Is my speedo reading near enough the right speed ? cheers Gary

Hi, im getting ready to put a discovery 300tdi engine and auto box in to my 1990 2.5 td 90.. while doing a bit of measuring last night my father suggested putting the 90 body on to the discovery chassis. I know there is a 6" difference in wheel base and the outriggers look to be in the wrong place but has anybody done this conversion before ? and was it a good job when done ? cheers Gary

hi, my 1990 2.5 td 90 is gettin a bit tired ( wouldnt pull a kipper of a greasy pate) so i had the change to buy a 300tdi auto disco ( rotten ). I would like some advice about the following,to put the 300tdi engine and auto box in to the 90, do i mount the gearbox using the disco gearbox member in the same position as the current gearbox/transfer box and use the existing drive shafts and just weld on the engine mounts to suit, or do i position the gearlever high low range lever where i want it and the just weld in the mounting to suit. i want to retain my middle seat. i havent removed either engine or box yet and im sure it will make more scence when ive the 2 boxes out and sitting on the floor side by side. but in the mean time i would like any advice, pit falls or handy tips i can get before i actually start work. ive a well equiped workshop with lift, lathe and milling machine and im pretty handy at using them so a bit of fab dosent worry me. cheers Gary

i was trying to sync the fobe to the alarm today. nothing happened so i had a good look around the wiring, i noticed that there was a connector unpugged from a geen box in the passanger side footwell. i plugged it in and straight a way it started to tick and the indicators flashed very quickly. the ticking and flashing stopped as soon as i switched the ignition on but still no start with key and the fobe wont sync , any ideas ???? cheers Gary

hi all, i just bought a 1997 v8 disco. i bought it knowing it wasnt starting and hadnt been started in 2 years. I had done some surfing on here and other forums and thought " i bet its the spider " so i got the disco home today, new battery, new battery in the key fobe, and tried to start it. inginition lights came on but when i switched the key to start nothing happened. i installed the spider bypass (landrover part ) tried again. still no start ( not cranking ) . I ran a wire down to the top of the starter solenoid and with the ignition on, touched the wire on the battery .. started after about 2 second. i was shocked but she's running very sweet. its still not starting with the key. the central locking isnt working, the alarm is a two button one and seems to be doing nothing. has any body any suggestions to solve this and the starting problem. sorry for the long post, are'nt V8 sweet running cheers Gary. ps. ive posted this on an other forum trying to get as much info as possibe.
